Thinking about attempting to code an service as a learning project, and to perhaps solve the social lock-in issue of gaming platform profiles that really pisses me off. 🤔

I really really don't like , however I'm way too attached to my almost 20 year old profile and like to do video game achievements. Having a unified, federated profile that pulls its data from all the different sources (Steam, PSN, Xbox, RetroAchievements.org and especially GOG) would be neat.

I would buy more if it wasn't such a hassle to rip them. I don't have a player. I have enough things to plug into my TV. I do have a BluRay drive but there is a whole thing you need to do for it to work.

People who do actual do this all the time. They get a kick out of defeating . For the rest of us it feels like we are being kicked by DRM for the sole crime of buying .

Steam doesn’t require games to have DRM. In fact, some of the biggest titles sold on Steam don’t even have DRM.

Here’s a list of some of them:

YAY! Praise for Pass the Salt is rolling in! I received a few questions about the audiobook. I wasn't able to find an audiobook publisher that wanted to produce this so if you want an audiobook, buy the eBook or give me money to make the audiobook happen. The eBook is DRM free! https://compassivistepublishing.com/product/pass-the-salt/ @bookstodon

To publishers:

I understand and even appreciate your efforts to offer your own sales platforms for ebooks outside the ubiquitous Amazon ecosystem.

But frankly, if that means having to use your own shitty, DRM-locked apps for reading your books, you don't encourage me to become your customer.

It’s been over a decade since Tor Books UK revealed that the decision to sell DRM-free didn’t negatively impact their business or cause an increase in unauthorised file sharing. Sadly, few traditional publishers have followed suit. I hope the rest of the industry takes the hint, sooner rather than later. The day ALL publishers stop infecting their ebooks with can’t come soon enough as far as I’m concerned. Defective by design is NOT a feature. @bookstodon

@slashdot I guess big factor in that is that do not apply to paper books, along with loss of access to a digital book if something got hacked, new software got incompatible with old format declared obsolete at pure whim, or because firm who provided the e-books reading online gone bankrupt, or because of a faulty backup, a power outage or a connectivity issue.

@kennykravitz @EposVox they should not only be legally forced to refund said pirchases but be liable for all the costs of obtaining -free, physical copies + the time it took to do so.

And I hope the affected customers can not just them into some shitty waiver but force them to said terms globally!

at least has provisions in place to provide people access to their games without Steamworks-based DRM should Valve ever go belly-up as a company, which seems unlikely but is a non-zero chance regardless!

Humble’s massive Terry Pratchett bundle includes 38 Discworld books for $18 https://www.polygon.com/deals/24036365/terry-pratchett-discworld-deal-humble-bundle

drsbaitso ,
@drsbaitso@infosec.exchange avatar

@polygon @polygon This looks like a good deal at first, but please be aware that

  1. It's US only.
  2. It's dreadfully hobbled by Adobe DRM

You should not buy it

Until today, my experience buying from Humble Bundle was they were always available unencumbered by . I have hundreds of built up over the past decade.

The is through 's ebook shop, and all the books are encumbered by and the DRM. There is zero indication that this DRM is included on the bundle page itself. and it explicitly says "Use on Any Device". On the page itself, the only indication the file has DRM is some small bottom-text that says "Download Options: EPUB 3 (Adobe DRM)".

Also, DRM Digital Editions will also "helpfully" install Norton for you as well. It's like the dogshit you just stepped in offered to stab you in the kidney, too.

This is shameful and disgusting from Humble Bundle. I know Humble Bundle got acquired years ago by IGN/Ziff Davis, but they'd avoided the levels of to make me stop using them.

The DRM is not unbreakable, but it is annoying. I recapped the utterly terrible ordeal I had with it here: https://infosec.exchange/@drsbaitso/111745438820039435

Meaning that if one can't a physical without at a fair and reasonable price making copies amd distributing them should be legal for everyone!

The absurdity of claiming for should also be limited to the amount if buying a without at the lowest price it has been offered - used or new - ever.
