    @ehyde huh, not used to getting this take on AI from fiction!

    Betty ,

    @ehyde I assume it's by someone who's got some experience as a programmer, since C is a moderately serious language, and not one you dabble in. Like, I guess it's not assembly, but it's not python.

    I wanted to document this piece of fabric my mother brought back from Guatamala over a decade ago, because the more you look at it, the more fascinating it is. I'm only an amateur, so please take all my assertions about it with a grain of salt. I'm confident but I could be confidently wrong!

    First off, one's impression is that this is a sort of garment, perhaps a poncho, with the embroidery going around the hole for the neck, and trim sewn on that would sit at the shoulders.

    Back of cloth, the impression is much less vivid. Everything looks a sort of faded terra cotta, except where sewn with darker or lighter, threads. Here you can see the remaining threads that had been holding the pleats together, and it is much more obvious that the large rectangle is actually three smaller, narrower rectangles sewn together.

    I say that the trim is meant to sit at the shoulders but if this was meant to be a child's garment, it would have been most of the way down to the crook of the elbow. The centre hole is 5 inches square, and I can get it over my head, but honestly I have a relatively small head.

    I'm not sure that was this piece of cloth's first use, though.

    The cloth was hand-woven on a loom of about 11 inches (or at least, that's the width of the weft) and then joined together at the selvage edge.

    Betty OP ,
    @Betty@fandom.ink avatar

    The real mystery is the "brocade" (??) or geometric (??) figures. I cannot tell if they were embroidered, or worked on the loom.

    I hope my pictures shows the long floats between colours, mostly travelling warp-wise, but occasionally travelling weft-wise. You can also see knots. Weavers, is this a thing? Could this be done on a loom?

    Detail of reverse, showing long floats of thread between colours. Most are travelling weft-wise, but occasionally they travel in the warp direction.

    infectious hanahaki, but it makes you fall in love with the hanahaki plant. The hanahaki plant is an obligate parasite.

    Betty OP ,
    @Betty@fandom.ink avatar

    actually maybe it's a fungal parasite that lives on the carnivorous hanahaki plant that makes you fall in love with the plant and pine over it until you die and fertilize it? This is almost a plausible parasitism.

    I kind of feel like I should say something about the Evil as Humans

    It's like, Lovecraftian horror, plus uh... team workplace comedy?

    Various things to rate it on

    • Ladies: like, a solid 50% A normal amount
    • Gore: 7/10? IDK, I'm a wuss about gore, probably I just can't conceive of the true "10"
    • Disability rep: weirdly good? Like, there's magical disability and non magical disability and it all just seemed kinda. You know, sometimes it be like that.
    • Main couple: Solid weirdos.
    Betty OP ,
    @Betty@fandom.ink avatar

    I know I sometimes watch shows and I'm like, "this couple is ace" but this couple romantically describe themselves as "accomplices" and that's what I appreciate about them. There was one scene that might have been a sex scene, but honestly it was a bit vaguely described, it might have been lovecraftian horror.

    OH WAIT

    Vore: like 5/10. Not all the vore, but not none.
    Dismemberment/maiming: uuuuuuuuuuuh be careful if that's a no go.
    Body horror: .... IDK, maybe a 6?

    Betty OP ,
    @Betty@fandom.ink avatar

    I won't say nothing bad happens to characters you're fond of, but not MXTX or Priest levels.

    Speaking of MXTX, there's not no necro, but by MXTX standards, there's no necro.

    Betty OP ,
    @Betty@fandom.ink avatar

    I guess this doesn't really convey why you might want to read it.

    The main couple are not really sure what each others' deal is, but they're like, really into each other and get along great from early on.

    The main pleasure for me was watching this one lovecraftian horror wander around acquiring a trail of misfit ducklings behind him, solving mysteries and falling into sewers.

    Betty OP ,
    @Betty@fandom.ink avatar

    Almost every character, no matter how minor, has a level of detail that makes them feel memorable, and real, even as the cast snowballs.

    The plot is quite tight, and the author is maybe even too careful tying up all the loose ends.

    If I had to make a criticism, I'd say that the end feels a bit like a bow is being put on everything, so I don't know if that's going to bug you.

    @knitting does anyone have a solution to the way that the tail of the long-tail cast-on gets untwisted (or over twisted) over a long number of cast on stitches?

    Other than letting your tail hang and untwist itself, which works less well when you've got >100 stitches worth of tail.

    New Year new list. Reebee Garofalo was one of the original people who put together Rock Against Racism Massachusetts but you may know him as the snare player for the Good Trouble Brass Band playing in the HONK! Festival of Activist Street Bands. He was cited in a ton of other Wikipedia articles and made that Genealogy of Pop/Rock Music chart you may have seen in an Edward Tufte book. A good guy to get to know, deserves a longer article but this is good for now

    @knitting does anyone have tips for weaving in the ends as you go on striped/colour work? I've been doing a sort of modified russian splice where I knit to the end of A, try to mark X where the end is, tink back, join B at X, and then knit back, hoping my colour change falls at the place I marked last time.
