I didn’t realize there was a problem. So did all the streaming services fuck up the colors or something?

@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

There are many issues with this analogy. For starters, the person can choose to date nobody and they aren’t stuck with any guy. “Nobody” is actually a choice. They can also look elsewhere - they have countless immediate, viable options.

If I choose not to vote, I still get Trump or Biden.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Non-participation is not the same as doing nothing. If she chooses to date neither, neither is in her life. If you do nothing, you still get trump or Biden. The analogy doesn’t hold.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Voting isn’t doing anything? Did you not see what happened when Trump got to pick three Supreme Court justices? Roe is gone dude. This stuff matters.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

What are you talking about? The senate has to approve them. The GOP controlled the senate. I get you don’t understand our system but before acting so smug I’d make sure I understand what happened.

Also they’re not “my” democrats.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I have read it don’t be an ass. Make a point or don’t.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

If the comment was sufficient we wouldn’t be here. It’s a bad analogy. Accept that it has flaws or make your case. Don’t keep pointing to the same insufficient comments as if the only answer is our lack of comprehension. Several people clearly disagree with it on the same grounds so maybe consider you’re wrong.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

If you and I choose not to vote for Trump or Biden, who do we wind up with?

If she says no to both guys, who does she wind up with?

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I live in the gulf coast. The violence is not removed from me. It’s arguably worse here than anywhere else in the US, they test those insane policies here. You know nothing about me or my family.

Interesting you dropped off that SCOTUS discussion. You seemed pretty smug and sure there too.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

That would make way more sense tbh

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

And the point is she doesn’t have to have anybody. We do. We have 2 people and 1 of them will be here whether we like it or not. We can’t opt out.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I didn’t dodge questions. Some of us critiqued your shit analogy and you got butthurt. That’s what happened here.

Have a good one mate. Last word is all yours - I’m sure it’s very important to you.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I don’t understand the question. We don’t elect based on popular vote.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

babe

seriously?

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

these flippant “just let them secede and suffer and die” comments are sad to read.

You’re also not allowed to complain about him calling you “bro” after you ended with “babe“ previously.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

It was in response to your patronizing nonsense. Yes, they should have turned the other cheek, but you literally started this! So yeah, you forfeit your right to critique it

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

The whole point of the trolley problem is to illustrate how difficult culpability/blame is and how a single choice can be incredibly multi-faceted to the point where you can’t possibly untangle it and find the “correct” answer unless you adhere to a strict, well-defined moral framework. Which usually means making a choice to ignore other factors and other valid moral frameworks. Hence the conundrum. It’s real use is to test drive how each framework handles the situation and to see your reaction to it.

You're missing the lesson here, or purposely obscuring it to win an internet argument in the hopes no one looks too closely because you cited a thoroughly-meme’d smart sounding philosophical question.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

And the reason OP’s analogy falls apart is choosing nobody or someone else is actually valid when you are deciding who to date. But there is going to be a president, it is going to be one of those two people, and not voting/voting third party in 2024 does not change that.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Missed that fair point. Either way you’re both being ridiculous.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Do you know what’s so frustrating about these people? They often won’t show up until 6-9 months before the election and start complaining about the lack of choice. They don’t vote in the primaries, they don’t work the other 3 1/2 years on campaigns or for causes they care about. They do nothing at the local or state levels. They show up last minute, scream “nothing we do matters,” then fuck off until the next general.

Just grenades complaining and griping and destroying things with no end in sight.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I said some people. If that’s not how you operate then you have nothing to worry about.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Thought I blocked you, my mistake

Florida deputies who fatally shot US airman burst into wrong apartment, attorney says ( apnews.com )

Deputies responding to a disturbance call at a Florida apartment complex burst into the wrong unit and fatally shot a Black U.S. Air Force airman who was home alone when they saw he was armed with a gun, an attorney for the man’s family said Wednesday....

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

You will never, ever catch someone on the far right acknowledging this issue.

I had the police enter my home once unannounced about 10 or 11 years ago. They just started shining flashlight and walking into my apartment and announced themselves when they were already through the threshold. 2am, I’m bleary eyed with my partner there. I started screaming at them and luckily nothing happened (luckily = I’m a white dude and there was a whiten woman scared next to me).

But all I can think about is if I had drawn a gun because people were intruding in my home…well, I’d be dead probably.

For context I live in such a gun nut state that our state motto is “sportsman’s paradise” (hunting) and we just ended permits for concealed carry. Yup, you read that right. Folks can just walk around with concealed guns here now like it’s 1844.

“Why won’t he do anything to stop the bombing?”

stops bomb shipment

“Dumb dumb didn’t know bombs are for bombing? Yeah right!”

Like what even is your comment trying to say?

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

You’re totally right he should just go ahead and let the shipment happen…?

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Ok so he should just let these through? And why are you responding as if anyone acted like the intended use of these bombs is a revelation?

No one here is saying this absolves him/us of the US’s role in Israel’s horrific actions. But there are protests happening, people are saying this needs to stop, and a shipment of bombs just stopped. That happened, and it’s worth noting. So we need to keep up the pressure to get this to stop entirely.

We both know he’s not going to just unilaterally end this horror show today.

Your phrasing of your first comment certainly read that way to me. I didn’t misspeak. If I did not understand your meaning/intention that’s a fair claim.

@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I took basic Econ. My point is decisions are multi-faceted. We are not all slaves of the invisible hand 24/7 as it guides our every single decision.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I am not forcing it with hostility. I made a broader point about treating people like pawns on a board and I got lectured about econ 101. Yeah I got a little snippy with them, sure I could've not been that way. But these responses are so absurd, they leave no nuance or middleground and keep telling me I am either saying things I didn't say or put up a lazy strawman as if it responds to what I said.

Also notice not one person wants to acknowledge that there is this implication people have some obligation to not leave their country as it means they are participating in "brain drain."

I get what you're saying, I really do. But the fact is people got all prickly when I tried to introduce nuance. Of course economic factors heavily drive our decisions. I'm not sure where I said anything remotely to the contrary, so I'm getting irritated.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

once they acclimate

I’m curious what you consider “acclimation” (and I assume you mean assimilate) because that’s a pretty loaded requirement

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

For the same reason we can’t take 15min without the context of the US’s size, smaller countries having larger percentages also need to be contextualized. The raw number does have some meaning here. It’s also about annual rate of immigration.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

It would be much more useful to look at it state-by-state as a few states are doing the heavy lifting. I say this as someone is decidedly pro-immigration. The logistics are no small matter

I live in Louisiana. Our only major experience with immigration was hurricane Katrina and they basically rebuilt our communities. I am eternally grateful.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

Pretty much

BolexForSoup , (edited )
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

There are also different immigration rates for different states, some of which are as big as major countries. There are many states in the US driving the national average down because they have such a low percentage.

Edit: added some stats.

BolexForSoup ,
@BolexForSoup@kbin.social avatar

I didn’t shift it. I introduced nuance. Nothing I said denied the impact of imperialism/economic realities. Show me where I said anything like that. I have written several responses that clearly indicate I know those are major factors. At this point responses like yours just mean you are choosing to deliberately misinterpret what I wrote/put words in my mouth and that you are ignoring anything else I wrote that could possibly clarify the situation.

Feels like I’m back on Reddit with this nonsense.
