Why US hockey players often speak with “fake Canadian” accents

They don't want to sound Canadian, but like a hockey player—a "linguistic persona."

Harvard has rescinded the suspension of a student who had been reporting for the Crimson on the pro-Palestinian encampment, raising questions about how that particular student was identified in the first place. According to the Crimson, the student had not taken part in the protest and had only “infrequently” reported on the encampment. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2024/5/11/harvard-crimson-reporter-involuntary-leave-protest/

Is implying things would be different if he had "frequently" reported on the encampment?

LastPass users targeted in phishing attacks good enough to trick even the savvy

Campaign used email, SMS, and voice calls to trick targets into divulging master passwords.

Key point is this: "companies and end users should always use multi-factor authentication to lockdown accounts when possible and ensure it’s compliant with the standard when available. available through push notifications or one-time passwords provided by text, email, or authenticator apps are better than nothing, but as events over the past few years have demonstrated, they are themselves easily defeated in credential phishing attacks"

Leaving aside the obvious GOP fascism just for the moment, a key reason why Ukraine is losing support broadly across the American electorate is that there is no apparent practical endgame in the conflict for Ukraine. It's obvious what Putin wants. But what does Ukraine really want that is practical to achieve? It is not unreasonable that at some point this question has to be asked repeatedly, given the reportedly more than $75 billion dollars of support that has flowed from the U.S. to that country.

BrianPierce ,
@BrianPierce@mstdn.social avatar

@lauren
Given what the ukrainians have done with that $75 billion, it seems like money well spent compared to the costs for us in europe and asia of letting conquer For comparison, the annual DoD budget is over ten times that at $816 billion.

What we've probably learned from them is likely worth a good bit too.

I'm happy so far as a US taxpayer.

I'm guessing a better endgame for might require finally getting F16s in use and loosening some restrictions on weapon usage.

Why does Apple Music continue to suck at suggesting music I might actually want to listen to? Maybe I have enabled some setting to make it obtuse, but it has to know by now what I listen to and what I never even bother with, and yet every time I launch the app it's just tons of whatever is most popular right now. Am I alone in this experience?

About this new Threads Post Reader...

So, you follow an account on @threads.net. Now they CAN NOT see your comments, but other Fediverse accounts CAN see the comments. You CAN NOT see comments of the Threads users, but of course Threads users CAN see them. You are entirely isolated from Threads except you can read the post. It's simply just a Threads Post Reader.

If the Threads author wants to see the Fediverse comments they need to create a Fediverse account and follow themselves. 🤔

Ford F-150 Lightnings will soon offer home AC power, possibly cheaper than grid

It's only one truck and one thermostat, but it could be the start of a V2H wave.

I'm eager for this and looking closely at options for my rural home. It would eliminate the need for a home generator for her for outages. Many of these could reduce the grid's storage needs (if they compensate for wear and tear on my battery).

Yup, bad design. Same thing in on drive. A divided highway type roadway with very low bridges that like to open trucks like a can opener.
