I think most Americans like the idea of public transport, and including a robust national rail network. The reason it doesn't exist are the oil and automotive lobbies. (Mostly oil.). Poorly educated Americans (the ones wearing MAGA hats) are easy to manipulate by these groups, as well.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

As a Detroiter, I think I really need to watch this.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

Yes. I've been told that by cops in prior years.

That said, things have improved enormously in the last 10 years. There is a vibrant downtown area, and fairly large pockets of redevelopment around it, with safe(-ish) and affordable housing.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

Yes, its daily. It took a few days to notice a difference for me, but it definitely helps me with executive function. I'm up to the max dosage after 18 months, but it's still working.

Side effects for me are nausea for maybe an hour after I take it, and major "shrinkage". Sex is a real challenge for around 8h after taking it, and it looks like I've been swimming in the Arctic sea for about that long. This isn't a major problem because I take it in the morning, but it has been occasionally frustrating. That effect wears off by evening, though, so my spouse is ok with me taking it. 🙂

I have never taken stimulants, so I can't offer a comparison there.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

I don't notice anything else related to vasoconstriction. My BP hasn't changed since I started on it, for instance. It doesn't really affect my appetite for sex, just my ability. This has lessened over time, but it's still present. (And after ~8h, everything is fine.)

You can take it before bed if you like. Some people find it sleep-inducing at first. I find it simulating an hour or two later.

From what I have read, there are several different experiences from it. You'll likely have to try it and see how it works for you, and what accommodations you'll need to make. Hopefully the comments in this thread give you an idea of what to look out for.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

Enough that I can code in pretty much anything. I think the typing point was when I coded professionally in my 4th or 5th language some time in the early 90s.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

I have been told (by my attorney) that arbitration is sometimes more expensive than filing suit. IIRC, the rationale is that arbitration can have very high fees and involve a large number of people. It was in the context of drawing up a boilerplate nda, but it has been awhile and I don't remember the details.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

I've tried paid versions of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. I am currently using Gemini, and it is working reasonably well for me.

I mostly use it to replace searches. I haven't used Google in years, but mainly relied on DuckDuckGo until SEO made it less useful. My secondary use case is for programming. I tend to jump around to a lot of different languages and frameworks, and it's hugely helpful to get sample code describing what I want to do when I don't know the syntax.

Once in a great while, I will have it rewrite something for me. That is mostly for inspiration if I want to change the tone of something I wrote (then I'll edit). I think that all of the LLMs suck at writing.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

I keep seeing this showing up in memes. Was there anything particularly interesting actually being shown to her? Her expression is pretty funny.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

Renewables are an important part of the mix, but seems like nuclear is more important right now. It's the best way to move industry away from coal and gas in the long run, though it's something we in the US should have started on 30 years ago.

I'm aware that nuclear power has it's own set of complications, but they're more solvable than reducing emissions without it

DelightfullyDivisive ,

I would love to understand this better. I have worked in power generation before (writing maintenance software for a nuclear plant, so I picked up a few things). I don't understand the distribution side at all, though.

Can you suggest a book or article on the subject?

DelightfullyDivisive ,

They aren't. They're responding to an allegation.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) denied the latest claims from House GOP impeachment investigators, who had accused the agency of intervening in the probe of Hunter Biden to stop an interview with one of his associates.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

There wasn't much meat in that story. While it is suspicious that a Russian oligarch paid for a lifetime membership in the NRA , that is not the same thing as funneling money into the Trump campaign. Can you cite any others that have more substantive allegations around Russian money in the NRA?

Before the more reactionary people attack me for being pro NRA, I most certainly am not. I just prefer to advance one or two solid arguments instead of a dozen mediocre or weak ones.

Edit: And thank you for posting that. I did not know there was even that much suspicion on them for accepting Russian money, though it isn't much of a surprise.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

IIRC, "irregardless" was added to more US dictionaries in the late 20th century. I had a coworker in the early 90s who would become viscerally angry when others would use it...so the rest of us would use it often.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

Correct - its a double negative. Similar to "inflammable" which should mean "not flammable", but doesn't.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

Same. I bought a 4-pack of toner refills with it. I'm on the 2nd one.

Does Reddit shadowban mentions of Lemmy?

In the months since I deleted my Reddit accounts and joined Lemmy, the lack of user base growth has made it clear that we need some users to stay on Reddit as a means of shepherding more users over on an ongoing basis. Otherwise, Reddit simply got what it wanted: less users who make a fuss about how it manages its platform...

DelightfullyDivisive ,

I don't know how frequently this happens, but my experience is that a link to a lemmy group was deleted by mods. It was very politely worded, and suggested and alternative community on Lemmy, and also noted that there's no reason that somebody couldn't read both communities. It was still deleted as "spam or self-promotion."

That could just be a maturity issue with the mod who deleted it. It could also be that Reddit itself is doing it and simply said it was done by the mods of the group.

DelightfullyDivisive OP ,

I don't know that scientists gaslit anyone. I think it's more the state of journalism driven by the way it is monetized. Chasing SEO drives clickbait headlines and sensational claims to the top of everyone's feed.

I really appreciate the discussion on Lemmy.

DelightfullyDivisive OP ,

The video (you can skip to the last five or 10 minutes of it to get the gist of what I'm talking about) says that the discrepancy isn't unexplained. It's point is that the different models depend on a large number of variables, and one of those variables is the size and brightness of the first generation of stars in the early universe. Tweaking that part of the model can explain the discrepancy. (According to the video.)

DelightfullyDivisive OP ,

I am not a planetary scientist, but I have read a bit on the subject. My understanding is that it's almost entirely due to the lack of magnetic field. The solar wind just blasts the atmosphere away over time.

If we ever reach a high enough state of technology to terraform Mars, we will have to figure out some way to protect the atmosphere. I found this video to be a really interesting take on the subject: https://youtu.be/HpcTJW4ur54?si=P-HpbrHPjJFfAaEI

Does ANYONE like autoplaying videos on news sites / articles?

In today’s fast-paced digital world, we often rely on various online platforms to quench our thirst for knowledge, information, and entertainment. Among these platforms, news websites hold a significant position as they allow us to stay updated about current events across the globe. However, despite their essential role in...

DelightfullyDivisive ,

Interesting. I use Google News as well, and I have never had audio play. I tend to use it on mobile, and my default browser on mobile is Firefox. Specifically Firefox in private browser mode, so I don't have to worry about cookies.

I use Firefox on the desktop as well, but not usually in private mode. I also don't ever have video autoplay that way. I'm not sure why. I don't think I installed any extensions to turn it off, but I might have tweaked the browser settings shortly after installing.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

I think that we're talking about the same thing. When I read those articles curated by Google news in my mobile browser, I have never, not once, had audio play. Maybe try Firefox mobile?

Finally deleted my reddit account after the AI news. What communities do you recommend on lemmy?

Ive been on reddit for more than a decade. Kinda bittersweet, but its not the first time I have moved on from an internet site. I just cant support reddit and sucking up all my posts for AI purposes. Feels terrible and spammy. Ive been a reddit premium holder for many many years....

DelightfullyDivisive ,

I'd use Lemmy Explorer to find communities that interest you. The link I just shared is sorted by subscriber count, so it should show the most active communities at the top.

DelightfullyDivisive ,

That's kinda hilarious. I was looking for cannabis related communities too. Believe it or not, I haven't had any cannabis today, either. 😄

DelightfullyDivisive ,

Thanks for creating it!

DelightfullyDivisive ,

I tap them and blow on them before I put them back into their case. In case there are any little ear wax flakes. I don't tend to have much in the way out of ear wax.

Neurodiversity In The Workplace ( sh.itjust.works )

I appreciate the fact that some employers recognize that some of their employees struggle with cognitive disorders. But, asking someone with ADHD to click through a very boring presentation about neurodiversity is almost peak irony. Not to mention, trying to distill such complex disorders down to one sentence is practically...

DelightfullyDivisive ,

I guess it depends on context. If it's an awareness thing aimed at helping peers and leaders support people, I think it's a good start. Most such things are inaccurate, though. This one says "challenging to maintain focus", which is only true of something I'm not interested in. At other times, it's more challenging to switch focus. 🙂

Mind if I hijack this thread for a related topic?
I'm on the hook for doing a short talk on ADHD in my workplace's next all-hands meeting (I volunteered). I figure I'll use the time to correct some misunderstandings. I'll probably start with the name - calling it "attention deficit" is like referring to color blindness as "vision deficit" - it's true in some circumstances, but not very useful. I'm a bit leery of going with "executive function impairment", since I think that many people might think all congnition is part of "executive function" and hear that as "thinking impaired", when it's much more specific.

Does anyone have a term they like better than ADHD to describe what's really going on with us?
