Yesterday we had a great conversation about engineers and delivering estimates. I wanna talk about the other side of it too.

For managers and leaders. What do you expect out of engineers when it comes to estimates? How do you evaluate whether you're getting good estimates?

What do you do with the estimates you receive from engineers? How does it impact other work activities and timelines?

Finally, how does the ability to give confident estimates factor into how you evaluate your engineers?

@polotek

We have a big project running right now to update Java libraries, and here's how we estimated it last year:

  • list of functional modules
  • complexity of each module
  • number of submodules in each
  • estimated time in days

We added 30% for QA.

I needed that for requesting funding from the business.

We are a month into this, running in 2 week sprints. Doing two PoCs to find the right version to update to. Once determined, then we'll have a better way to identify milestones.

@polotek

I guess I could expand upon what I do with estimates.
https://NerdJoy.social/@JillsJoy/112373294933697033

I used those development estimates, bumped up by 30% to include QA efforts, as part of my equation to ask for funding.

Multiplying the estimated person-days by an estimated person-wage gave me the $ amount to ask for from corporate finance in order to budget and pay for the work to actually get done. I was able to hire/allocate and pay for people to do the actual work.

JillsJoy ,
@JillsJoy@NerdJoy.social avatar

@polotek if it were a smaller effort (a month or less), I wouldn't have to ask for funding. This was an unexpected 12-month effort that we needed to augment staff for.

@polotek a security vulnerability found in a critical Java framework. LOLsob

And now out of curiosity, I searched for "beginner friendly games for beginner gamers"

FYI, if you're thinking Minecraft, actually that is a terrible game to start someone on (I speak this through experience)

@geraineon Polytopia is the mobile game that we've really enjoyed and even Kiddo as a 5yo could play it.

I am tempting fate by doing a retrospective on this storm and what a power outage means for me personally but here we go! Weds night it was starting to snow. Woke up Thursday to a winter wonderland but with the sort of heavy wet snow that means there's going to be trouble. Made coffee, turned heat on higher than usual, downloaded some media because I am basically Murderbot, did some basic path shoveling. 🧵

    I watched the first episode of the , starring today.

    1930s Shanghai, that looks a lot like 1930s Chicago gangsters? Big budget? Big name stars? swoons

    It's gonna be intense, I can tell already. It also seems to be setting up the backstory of how the Communist party was able to rise in China 100 years ago (from the Chinese Communist Party perspective), with a diligent, talented, poor handsome fella (Yibo) as protagonist. Fascinating.

    Shout-out to year-ago Jill who got to see perform live a second time. I got a high five from Mithra and I still wish I knew what shoes those were that Tablo wore...

    Mithra Jin from Epik High raps into a microphone on stage, his right arm outstretched.

    I just realized there's a bra on the stage behind Sik-k. There were actually a LOT of bras thrown at him.

    Not mine, though. Pretty sure.

    For a lot of people this storm has been mostly rain, or snow that turned into rain, but that's not how it's been in Randolph at all.

    @jessamyn that's a lot of snow! Heavy, but not too wet?

    I don't think all episodes are out yet. It sounds like it is based in the 1930s?

    (I follow folks on bsky who are very excited about it.)

    I need a or recommendation where the romance has a happy ending, please? I cannot afford to have my heart shredded by fiction currently.

    Ooo, MyDramaList.com has their annual summaries available now!

    As I only started using MDL in April of last year, my YEAR stats are wrong, but overall stats make sense.

    Most watched actresses are Kim Go-eun (7) and Zhao Lusi (5).

    Most watched actors are Park Hyung-sik (7) Song Joong-Ki and Doh Kyungsoo (6), and Park Seo-jun and Jang Dong-Gun (5).

    Wow, this weekend's episodes 29 and 30 of the for the were SO GOOD. The action scenes in ep 30 were exciting and fun to watch, and only slightly reminiscent of the classic 1960s live-action Batman and Robin TV series.

    Hopefully non-spoilery image below. I had to watch this whole scene multiple times, it was so good.
