Sorry for waiting on this one, was kind of hoping my home lemmy server would come back from 502; but it doesn't seem like it, in the meantime I'll keep posting these and see if I can establish a second backup community for those who care.

The fact we have passione as studio and Kevin Penkin for the music alone should be more than enough to get people hyped, and it seems like the studio is going all in too so I don't doubt this will be worth the watch.

For me this is my first exposure to the series and right now it's giving me the relaxed banter vibes frieren has, loving it so far.

Is your browser relationship on the rocks? Time to confess: why haven't you given Firefox a chance? 😉

@nixCraft
No need to give it a chance, it's my daily driver and I've been happy using it.
My only complaint is the lack of tab groups (I've tried all the extensions already) but my 2948 tabs are beyond organization now.

Last Friday: Let us learn Rust.

Today: I give up. Let’s go back to Python. It is slow, but at least I can put something useful together.

Scraft161 ,
@Scraft161@tsukihi.me avatar

@nixCraft
Rust definitely is not a fast language to learn, but once you start getting your head wrapped around some of its concepts it allows for an incredible experience.

If you are the type that learns by doing definitely go check out rustlings.
Otherwise feel free to consult other resources online.

Also if the language syntax looks verbose to you, that's largely intentional to help make ""self documenting"" code actually documenting.

My most used keyboard shortcut at the CLI:

CTRL + a (go to the start of line)

CTRL + e (go end of the line)

CTRL + L (clear the screen)

CTRL + r (recall bash history)

What about you?

CTRL + m if you haven't used this you've never ran a command (it's used behind the scenes when you hit enter)

Hardware security key options?

I've been thinking about getting a hardware security key and have heard of yubikey before; but I want to see what my options are and if they are worth it in your opinion.
My current setup is a local KeePassXC database (that I sync between my PC and phone and also acts as TOTP authenticator app), I know that KeePass supports hardware keys for unlocking the database.

I am personally still of the belief that passwords are the safest when done right; but 2FA/MFA can greatly increase security on top of that (again, if done right).
The key work work together with already existing passwords, not replace them.

As I use linux as my primary OS I do expect it to support it and anything that doesn't I will have to pass on.

PS: what are the things I need to know about these hardware keys that's not being talked about too much, I am very much delving into new territory and want to make sure I'm properly educated before I delve in.

Let's NOT go that route.

I'm very much looking for a hardware key to avoid biometrics (I can have a field day expressing my opinions on those; but in general they tend to be the weakest MFA factor and most have known working bypasses based on photos).
This leans a little too close to that for me to consider, let alone all of the things you have to consider when putting implants in your body.

Scraft161 OP ,
@Scraft161@tsukihi.me avatar

For many TOTP may be a good option; but my experience with TOTP has been less than subpar.

Initially I did use TOTP like you're supposed to; but after my last phone died I had to set up TOTP on the accounts that used it after getting into them without it using backup codes.
This lead me to put the TOTP stuff inside my KeePass vault (as KeePassXC supports TOTP) which is backed up (unlike most TOTP solutions I've used).
The problem now is that my 2FA keys are stored in the same location as my passwords... (not that I'm worried about someone breaking the vault; but this is not how 2FA is supposed to work).

Additionally I have some other issues with TOTP that make it far from ideal for me and hardware keys seem to be a good fit to solve my issues with TOTP.

Poll: Who is eating most of your RAM on your computer? Please boost for reach 🙏

Scraft161 ,
@Scraft161@tsukihi.me avatar

@nixCraft
Firefox with my 2K+ tabs open does take a good set of RAM, but it is far more justified than the over half a gig discord takes just sitting idle most of the time.
Maybe if they had made a decent app I wouldn't care, but this half broken piece of garbage is not worth it.

Okay, wow. Apologies if this seems like it's getting stuck in my craw. But... it is.

What is a programmable thermostat? It is a thermostat where you can tell it different set points based on a schedule. For instance, at 10:00 at night it moves to your "bedtime" temp and at 6:00 in the morning it moves to your "wake" temperature.

Basic units usually offer four scheduling periods per day: wake, away (when at work), return, sleep.

All it's doing is changing the set point at specific times.

All this makes me do is look for already existing open source alternatives or see if it is possible to create my own.

What I've seen time and time again is that cloud is not a feature, it's something to stay away from as you will either be forced into a subscription service or have features you paid for taken away.
I believe that it's easy for the open source community to create a simple solution for this, even if it requires a raspberry pi and a web server.
