I admit, I am never a big fan of Discord. Now that Discord is getting worse with ads and even a lot of questionable choices that I wish there is something better.

Yes, I’m getting rid of Discord in a few months for our server that my mods use for a self hosted chat server that is open source. I did consider Matrix at one point, but given all the drawbacks with lack of moderation tools and protections against channel raids, besides poor UX is why I decided against it.

The problem is, the other option has it's drawbacks too either in feature set or ease of use. I have used XMPP and IRC in the past, but the ideal solution for a Discord alternative is:

  • Self Hosted
  • Open Sourced (ideally)
  • Easy to use interface with good onboarding and user experience
  • Have good moderation tools and integrations for bots
  • Uses an open and decentralized standard for chat

open standards, open source and the ability to self host is the defense against enshittification.

I finally found the culprit as to why the server is loading slowly.

[12-Apr-2024 16:52:20] WARNING: [pool www] seems busy (you may need to increase pm.start_servers, or pm.min/max_spare_servers), spawning 32 children, there are 0 idle, and 63 total children
[12-Apr-2024 16:52:21] WARNING: [pool www] server reached pm.max_children setting (75), consider raising it

I needed to raise the max children setting, so I set it to 200 since I have a lot of free memory. Probably having authorized_fetch increased the load on the server for Wordpress since it has to do the signatures.

Talking about anime music sales, CD sales in Japan may be inflated because of idol music releases.

If you are into idols, idol groups sell CDs with things like handshake or election tickets. This allows the fan to buy a ticket to have a handshake session with their Oshi or vote for them in an election, which is a popularity contest to see who will get to be the center. As expected, it’s a big money maker :leafeonmoney:

You might be wondering, what happens to those CDs after the person use it to get the tickets? Second hand shops will only buy two and there is only so many people that will accept them when one give them away. Where they end up utilmately? In the trash or littered on a mountain :neocat_facepalm:

In a recent anime industry report, about half the industry workers work over 225 monthly hours.

About half of people in the Japanese anime industry said they work over 225 hours per month, highlighting the long working hours compared with other fields, a recent survey by an industry association showed.

The number greatly surpasses the full-time workers' average of 163.5 hours in the health ministry's survey for 2023, according to the Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association.

This is simply not sustainable and we know for a long time the working conditions in the Japanese animation industry is just bad.

That is probably why it’s good idea to read the ToS and even EULAs. You don’t know what clauses that is lurking there. At least their response is reasonable, unlike Hetzner with how they handled the SFW yuri image debacle.

There is a good number of things named after it, besides our servers, which includes:

  • The Volcano
  • A former neighborhood in Kagojima
  • A rail line in Osaka and a station
  • A character named Mai Sakurajima from Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
  • A type of Japanese Radish (Sakurajima daikon radish)
  • A type of Japanese Orange (Sakurajima komikan orange)
  • A ferry that goes between Kagoshima Port and Sakurajima Port
  • A novella.

Breaking Down Apple’s Walled Garden

chikorita157 ,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@NullNowhere @chikorita157 The thing is, we used to have a lot of competition on the Desktop and Smartphone space… now, it’s only like two main competitors (of course there is Linux, but it’s relatively small and don’t have commercial software support, which is actually important on the smartphone side especially).

In the 2000/2010ss, we had Windows Mobile/Windows Phone, PalmOS/WebOS, Symbian, Android, and iOS. Now, we only have Android and iOS, which is mno wonder why Google and Apple can abuse their monopolies.

That said, I do want to see what the EU has on iOS in the US, but hopefully the DOJ will make it so that Apple can’t put restrictions on the sideloading and charge that fee for installs. It should really be more like macOS where you can install any app that is notarized/signed at the minimum to make sure it’s not malware and is a legit app, while having the ability to run unsigned apps if the user understands the risk. Most normal users aren’t going to sideload apps.

Also, having more browser engine choices would be nice.

While I like Apple products, their business practices does leave a lo be desired as they try to walk around the compliance of the EU Digital Services Act.

It’s only a matter of time until the iOS walled garden has to be more like macOS. I would prefer it if they gave choice instead of being forced into downloading apps from the App Store.

It's not like they are going to lose a lot of money as most average consumers will still buy apps from their app store and use their services. The difference is they have more control over their devices if they want and also more competition.

I have a bad feeling that if Apple keeps being punitive against EU’s DSA, it will end badly with more countries including the US taking action than just fully complying with it.

I’m happy that I made the move to @Sharkey in late November as I was not really confident in the direction Firefish is heading. It was evident with the slow performance and local timeline would fail to load. Activity was decreasing on Sakurajima Social before the move because of how bad of an experience it was.

After the move, activity started to pick up again thanks to the improved performance. Misskey 13 resolved all the issues Misskey 12 forks are facing that caused Foundkey to go EOL with Firefish in the mess it’s currently in (Iceshrimp has the same scaling issues, but at least from what I heard, that team is at least responsive.

With Firefish Social in a worse mess as there are reports no new posts are being fetched, making the timeline 5 days old and the admins completely unresponsive. At this point, I don’t know if it’s even possible to migrate the account off Firefish Social if federation is not working on that server. This is why we dumped Firefish for Sharkey.

With that, besides our server, a handful of established Firefish servers are starting to jump ship to IceShimp or Sharkey. Infosec Exchange’s Firefish server transitioned to IceShimp. It should be even easier to migrate to Sharkey as there are documentation on how to do it.

I do recommend Sharkey over IceShrimp since it has a public timeline view (for visitors), more moderation tools and performance. The Sharkey Team is very responsive and helpful. Of course, they are adding back features that are in Firefish.

But I have a feeling that at the rate things are going for Firefish, it may have a bleak future ahead unless it can turn things around.

It’s unfortunate to see Firefish turn out like this, but it’s not surprising.

@yon I only posted this as a a warning given the state of Firefish is in seeing all the reports I'm hearing and trying to give a notice to other Firefish admins to probably think about switching software and also not to recommend the software. I don’t want users get stuck with using software that will get hardly any support or having a hard time to get support. When the flagship instance continues to worsen, it gives one worry about the over getting support.

I think this is a case of taking on too much, and straying too far away from upstream Misskey, with the inability to implement the improvements. If one is going to make a lot of changes, one has to prepare to do the backend work as well to make it run better, and that can be difficult.

The red flag that Firefish is in trouble is it taking days to fix a critical security flaw. This was the reason we immediately switched.

It seems that one of the biggest Firefish server the Firefish main dev has stopped working completely. It’s been down for over two weeks. I am worried that this fate will happen to Firefish Social as well. You should probably migrate your account elsewhere.

If you are on Firefish, I suggest jumping ship to either Sharkey or Iceshrimp. I do recommend Sharkey since it scales better and most of the Firefish features are coming back, especially in the upcoming release.

The only problem, those drives are just really expensive. Like 6k. LTO-8, close to 5K.

Wish these stuff was a bit cheaper to store bulk data without relying on bunch of external drives or maybe building another server and hosting it somewhere.

Besides Intel pretty pathetic attempt to bash AMD over their naming scheme, AMD in 2024 is planning to sell the same Ryzen 7840U and brand it as a 8840U, the average consumer is going to see the 8840U being faster than the 7840U, when in reality it's not. It's just a rebrand with minor changes. It's an anti-consumer move and pretty deceptive since an average consumer isn't going to know which is the fastest CPU on a laptop.

Intel of course is guilty of the same thing, but of course they do the same. Also, Intel made a sleazy slide deck calling AMD out for selling a 2019 year APU in 2023, although it has energy efficiency improvements.

The only reason we had to take more steps is because we were using the 1.0.4 beta build of Firefish. The Dev team is helpful if you run into any issues migrating. You should probably upgrade Firefish to 1.0.5 RC1 before migrating

@earth_walker Firefish is based on Misskey 12, which has scalability issues when there are a lot of users. This is why Firefish Social is unstable and unusable most of the time.

Misskey 13 improved the scalability issues and runs better even on servers with 2 GB of RAM, which our setup uses. Sharkey is basically a soft fork of Misskey that follows it upstream, while adding new features. So far, it added features that Firefish has such as Mastodon API, federated edits, account approvals, MFM play button to name a few. Basically, it cam be compared to what Glitch-Soc is to Vanilla Mastodon.

A full list of differences is in the official documentation: https://docs.joinsharkey.org/docs/comparsion/misskey/

I figured out that you can use the role system in Misskey/Sharkey as a user directory since you can add remote users too. It can make it easy to find new people to follow and even see the timeline of the members that are in that role.

This is a neat feature, which Firefish didn't have.

Example of the list of users in an assign role.
