So when will it be possible to create a search engine of all ‘public’ users across Threads, Bluesky and the ActivityPub archipelago? Cc @tchambers

has no daily active user data, but it does have monthly active user data (1.02m MAU according to fedidb)

has both MAU and DAU: 1.37m MAU and 291k DAU, for a ratio of 4.7

If we apply that ratio to fedi we get a 271k DAU for fedi.

Thoughts?

tchambers ,
@tchambers@indieweb.social avatar

@laurenshof Good data.

tchambers ,
@tchambers@indieweb.social avatar

@laurenshof My thoughts: I do think "monthly active users" became a standard measurement for social platforms for a good reason - it gives a bit more of a sense of overall sustained usage of the platform than just DAU. And FAR more than whatever Elon's "unregretted user seconds" of usage ever was supposed to mean.

From my main Mastodon account. All the various types of accounts I list in that post will all be first-class accounts on Threads too, once it fully federates. To the great benefit of all the platforms that connect to each other.

"Activity Pub can also fulfill many of the same functions as AT. While Activity Pub servers are more monolithic making a “crawler” fairly impossible, there are several various Activity Pub server types (e.g. Mastodon vs Lemmy) that are mostly/partially compatible and would replace the need for crawlers. Throwing in user-owned account identification Activity Pub could also do everything AT can do."

The Podcast Index ActivityPub bridge now properly handles Mastodon "authorized fetch". If you had trouble following a podcast from an authorized fetch enabled instance, please cancel that follow and try again.

This may also resolve other sporadic follow issues from Sharkey/Misskey instances. Testing from people on those platforms would be welcome.

    @mike- new numbers, but ones that tell the same story we discussed on your podcast: on my server, we have about 1 moderator to 500 users. Here are the new numbers on how that dynamic plays out for major social platforms in the EU:

    "X does have the worst ratio of moderation staff to users, at 1/60,249, with LinkedIn coming in second (1/41,652), then TikTok (1/22,586) and Meta (1/17,600)."

    https://www.socialmediatoday.com/news/x-has-significantly-fewer-moderation-staff/714650/

    tchambers OP ,
    @tchambers@indieweb.social avatar

    @mmccue @mike see this, too:

    tchambers OP ,
    @tchambers@indieweb.social avatar

    @hrefna @thisismissem @fediplomacy A fair point that it is only one data point, but it is the only data on moderation the big platforms have submitted to the EU to this degree.

    And as a non-paid Moderator, I am sure with certainty that I do more work on this than I would if I were paid at a 9-5pm gig.

    tchambers OP ,
    @tchambers@indieweb.social avatar

    @hrefna @thisismissem @fediplomacy Also: I'd wager that most Mastodon admins know their server users better, and know the local community that their server focuses on better than say a moderator covering all of say, France, or the entire EU...

    tchambers OP ,
    @tchambers@indieweb.social avatar

    @hrefna @thisismissem @fediplomacy

    Did I get this right? Your argument to the indieweb.social example is that my situation may be uncommon of most Mastodon servers, and as evidence, that the 10 largest Mastodon servers may have significantly worse user-to-moderator ratios?

    I think I also heard that my moderating experience and hours compared to paid mods may be unusual.

    I want to consider the objections but first make sure I'm hearing them accurately.

    How are "non-threads" relevant?

    tchambers OP ,
    @tchambers@indieweb.social avatar

    @angdraug @hrefna @thisismissem @fediplomacy It is a good point that quality control of commercial mods can vary too. And that many on paid services are likely so overturned -- as the mod to user rates from the EU show.
