This is old news, 5 months old. I thought they meant more manufacturers apart from google and samsung.

limerod ,

Interesting, it appears they archived the github repos on may 19th after that tweet.

More ironic about them wiping your data considering they credit other ROMs! https://reddthat.com/pictrs/image/b4fcd2fc-e94f-49f5-b4c9-6fe9eaac10d8.jpeg

4 months durability for an $800 phone!

My old $200 Motorola G9 Power phone lasted almost 4 years with only very minor scratches. Obviously in that period I have dropped it a few times getting out of the car, where the phone sometimes work itself out of my pant pocket while I drive, and then it slips out when I get out of the car. But no problem on my previous phones,...

The newer Sony phones have improved software support of 3 OS & 4 years of security updates.

Rant: vanilla local app search is ridiculously bad

For a search company I can't believe how terrible the Android app search is. I can't even search "bank" for my banking apps, and there doesn't really seem to be any metadata except for the title that goes into the search. Which is absolutely ridiculous given how many companies name their apps something cReAtIvE like "home" or...

limerod ,

In colorOS smartphones. The default launcher shows ads when you use their search function. Fortunately, this special search can be disabled.

limerod ,

Niagara launcher, kiss or kvaesto are the way to go. If you want a decent app search. I would also recommend Smart Launcher 6; the search bar is pretty good. Not to mention the automatic app categories you get for all your apps.

limerod OP ,

Hmm, but the new pixel 8 series do support display output over USB type-C after the March update.

limerod OP ,

Something like samsung Dex on regular android?

limerod OP ,

He probably meant to say Open Source operating system.

limerod OP ,

With time that will change. It's like the 1st smartphones in the world. Not the best experience at 1st. But, now we have phones with processing power equal to desktops and the ability to do productive tasks on the go.

limerod OP ,

I was giving an example about device improvements. The durability will continue to improve as tech moves forward.

limerod ,

Yeah, this would be the main. There was a time when VLC had blacklisted huawei phones from installing their app on the Playstore when they had enough with the negative reviews.

limerod ,

Enhanced Links preview is a sync ultra feature. Perhaps, that's close to what you desire?

limerod ,

It takes a beat to load even after multiple times but no crashes were observed so far. I'm guessing the post is taxing the boost app in some manner which causes the crash on some smartphones.

limerod ,

No, the whole point of Gemini is Google integration. Use chatgpt or Bing AI if you want something similar not tied to Google.

limerod ,

The CMF brand is aimed at the budget audience. Meanwhile nothing is in the upper midrange segment. Thats why.

Is there any solution available for controlling the volume without pressing the physical volume buttons ?

So I just bought a OnePlus 12 recently, I was used to controlling volume using the onehand operations goodlock module in my Samsung galaxy S23. I basically never had to press the volume buttons to control the volume unless absolutely necessary....

limerod ,

There is. I use an app called Software volume button

You can add the app to the sidebar for quick access and change the volume seamlessly.

limerod ,

As previously announced for the Pixel 8, the 8a will be getting on-device Gemini Nano — in a future update — as a developer option that users can enable for Recorder Summarization, better Gboard replies, and Magic Compose in Messages.

I'm guessing there is a negative in enabling this feature if it's going to be tucked in developer settings. Likely increased app reloads and the phone running hotter.

limerod OP ,

That's why I got a smart band. It tracks all useful metrics like HR, sleep, stress, SPO2 and does limited smartwatch stuff. Plus, it costs much less compared to a smartwatch without needing a ton of battery to boot with.

limerod OP ,

Pebble was the best smartwatch maker to date. It's unfortunate no one is capable of replicating the features, battery life, and community support like them. I like snazzy fast displays like anyone else. But, I also like weeks long battery life. A pebble like smartwatch with E-ink displays should be resurrected in the near future some day.

limerod OP ,

Yes, for that 5-10% battery improvement.

limerod OP ,

The model size for this task would be so small and energy consumption so miniscule it won't matter.

limerod OP ,

They have much more complex models running on-device. It would be laughable if this was not.

limerod OP ,

Hmm, that's not how it works.

limerod OP ,

Yeah, adaptive battery 1st introduced in android 9.

limerod OP ,

I did try bangle.js gadgetbridge from play store and it showed the fit 3 as incompatible.

limerod OP ,

Bummer. Thanks for helping, anyway.

limerod ,

Your phone needs to be connected to WiFi or data(depending on your settings) and needs to be idle and charging. Playstore will slowly auto update your apps as long as your phone is not too hot for auto-updates. This process takes a long time.
