Trump asked Big Oil execs to give him $1 billion for his campaign.

He promised lower taxes and a rollback of Biden's climate regulations and clean energy programs in return.

Trump is literally willing to take bribes in exchange for the destruction of the planet.

Be warned.

Call me crazy, but maybe presidents who get themselves indicted shouldn't have their criminal trials presided over by judges they themselves appointed.

xerge ,

@rbreich Probably normal for the USA. A country that is internationally famous for its class justice. Something D.J. Trump himself coincidentally is an excellent example of.

Pepsi replaced its 32oz Gatorade bottle with a 28oz for the same price.

Nabisco shrank the family size box of Wheat Thins by 12%.

General Mills shrank the family size box of Cocoa Puffs by 6%.

Frito-Lay shrank the size of a bag of Doritos by 5%.

Shrinkflation is everywhere.

Corporate income tax rate before the Trump tax cuts: 35%

After the Trump tax cuts: 21%

What many corporations actually paid with loopholes: 14%

What Netflix, Bank of America, and Nike paid: Less than 5%

What Trump’s planning for a second term? Even more corporate tax cuts.

@rbreich man of the people, etc.

It is truly stunning to me that an obvious con-man can convince a substantial part of the population that he is a billionaire, a successful businessman, and a man of the people that is waging war against the rich and powerful elite, when all of these things are obvious lies. Really, really obvious lies.

I just don't understand the psychology behind it. It clearly works for him, but how? Why?

What's in the news?

Trump's shifting abortion stance, Trump suing his judge, Trump's fundraising claims.

TOMORROW: Look for another story about how voters don't feel like Biden's done anything.

See how this works?

There’s something odd about Trump’s inability to post an appeal bond in his NY civil fraud case. All those buildings and clubs could serve as collateral against a loan to pay the bond…unless they are already pledged as collateral on other loans. Is it all a house of cards?

My wife updated from iPhone 10 to 13 and can't see any real difference other than "the camera seems a bit better".

Given how hard it was for her to upgrade (lots of relogging into apps) she's reluctant to upgrade years.

This feels ominous to me: new phones just aren't that unique

xerge ,
@xerge@mastodon.nl avatar

@scottjenson The one major innovation for the rotary telephone (invented in 1891) was push buttons (1960s). Mobile phones and smart phones came much later and are arguably a different device.

A well designed tool doesn't need frequent updates.

There is no capturable metric for enjoyment. What products/games can capture is engagement and that is then misinterpreted as enjoyment. There are a lot of products I engage with because I want want they produce, but I am unhappy.

xerge ,
@xerge@mastodon.nl avatar

@grumpygamer I “engaged” with my gaming PC for about 2 hours yesterday, because Bluetooth broke after an update, again, and even google was no help. I think even my neighbors knew there was no enjoyment in those two hours. JFC windows is garbage. Even after 35 years they can’t make a product that actually works and keeps working.

Well, I was planning to livestream a bike ride today but it looks like this rain will never stop. ☔

Edit: people seem to be focusing on "ride" instead of "livestream". You can't see anything on the livestream if it's pouring rain. And ik ben niet van suiker, but ELECTRONICS ARE DAMAGED BY WATER! 💦⚡💥

xerge ,

@notjustbikes I understand. With my limited knowledge about YouTube creation I thought that GoPros were both popular for this kind of thing and also waterproof, so I didn’t even think about that detail.

Also, of course you wouldn’t film yourself cycling in the rain, because it’d look terrible and be the opposite of fun.

I do think that showing how many people here will still “happily” cycle even in the rain would be interesting to the non-Dutch.

You’re officially not made of sugar. :)

We have been having the same debate for 100 years.

Are infectious respiratory disease pathogens transmitted through the air or not?

Tl;dr: yes

Let's dive into the history books and look at a series of past publications about airborne spread of pathogens for this thread ...

xerge ,
@xerge@mastodon.nl avatar

@jmcrookston but it’s so inconvenient that some diseases are airborne. Can’t we just pretend they don’t exist? It’d make physicians, hospitals and governments feel so much better about what they did in the past and it preserves the profits of the 1%. Win-win. Right?
