Me, feeding 2 people and 2 cats on a 60k EUR salary without benefits (because technically self-employed), reading those comments that claim a 501(c)(3) is some kind of nefarious scheme to hide money 😐
@Gargron A tiny minority is making the huge stink. We're with you. We appreciate and support what you're doing. And we know you're not planning anything nefarious. Thank you for everything that you do! Really!
@Gargron As an American, I am looking forward to contributing to the 501c3 and supporting Mastodon in that way. I know that more resources are needed and want to help. Please post enough details so I can contribute money, have not seen that yet. Perhaps, though, you could reassure people if you could pledge that Mastodon will not get involved with some of the sketchier things Biz Stone has pushed (cryptocurrency and blockchain).
@Gargron I can't speak to what everyone else is saying. I'm not saying that at all. You deserve a fair payday. I don't think any reasonable person would argue differently.
Having two board members so incredibly close to things a large number of people here have been hurt by (AI and Twitter) can you blame people for being like they may have put their faith (maybe not fair, but we did) in the wrong software and the wrong advocate for it?
@Gargron Some people in the FOSS community get really weird with their purity testing. It goes way beyond simple, healthy skepticism.
These people think that if a FOSS project's maintainers aren't willing to dedicate 100+ hours a week on their project for no pay, then they are "impure"/"compromised.""
For a project of Mastodon's scale, the recent donations are not the comically huge amount they think it is.
@chriswho@QueenieBeanie@Gargron It’s not a strawman. People don’t want him to get paid. They don’t donate enough and anytime earning money comes up people scream “capitalism” The world doesn’t run on free despite what this place likes to act like. A lot of people that came to fedi are also serial harassers that got kicked off of Big Social
@Gargron let me guess: these are Americans that are used to religious organizations hiding money like this, and all non-profits are tarred with this brush.
Just cause Scientology (probably) does this doesn't mean all non-profits do
Or they're sore about the Board of Directors (I read it on the internet; I am not allowed to consider it truth. My hot take on that is https://fosstodon.org/@yakkoj/112345465023936228 and I see you've responded to that part in this thread)
