I'm debating reviving my official pixelfed hosting service idea, it's not a regular host service though!

Rather you'd bring a S3, Hetzner, Linode, DigitalOcean API key to our service

We would provision or otherwise manage (1-click updates, automated backups) your instance while allowing you to maintain total control over ownership of the underlying server and data

I'm thinking $5-20 a month for this, and it would allow admins a new level of peace of mind while maintaining total control

@dansup I maintain many personal servers (Mastodon, email server, Bluesky PDS, DNS, VPN, WordPress, Nextcloud, Peertube) and several more!, that I'd welcome having a Pixelfed instance that someone else would maintain for me. I'm just out of spare time.

I've thought of setting up a Pixelfed instance, but just haven't had the weekend time to do it.

But, why did it take Oliphant so long to realize, or admit, the harm being done by promoting that woman's lies and manipulation? Is there an explanation for the change, and an apology for the harm done?

All established Admins knew the woman lies about people. That she practices reputation assassination for revenge and compliance. Why was he complicit all this time?

Unfortunately, too, the mindless Admins who used the tier 3 list are not likely to remove any blocks. And people on .art and the instances that used that block list are unaware that they have been cut off from a significant part of the Fediverse.

I've been running multiple separate servers on DO for years and never had an issue (Mastodon (2 servers), Peertube, WordPress, WireGuard VPN, mail server, Phanpy, Bluesky PDS, and a general web server) with never a problem. I also use 2 DO Managed Postgres DBs and a DO Managed MySQL DB. Everything runs fast. Their support is excellent. They have many excellent tutorials.

Once they contacted me because I forgot to close a port in the firewall a few hours after I forgot to close it, so they do security scanning as well.

Scaling to a larger server, to get more disk space, or a larger DB is just a click.

Automated backups.

I think they are worth the small extra cost.

I'm putting this under because I've noticed that since 12 PM EDT yesterday (30-Apr-2024), API requests coming in from 216.106.86.232 have been returning 500 errors constantly from my server. No other 500 errors were being returned.

I blocked the IP at the Cloudflare firewall and now the 500 errors have stopped. There were more than 93K 500 return codes in total until now!

I have no idea what the requests are, and it's too late at night to do more research, but I'm passing this along to other Admins as a warning and to see if anyone else is seeing similar behavior.

Here's what I see in Cloudflare for the last one hour before blocking the IP address. Notice all the requests returning 500 are from this single IP. There are no page views. It's all API requests. And 500 errors stopped after I blocked it.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks for doing this.

I'm going to try to see, this weekend, what they have in the payload. It might be an innocent mistake. Or, it may be malicious, and then I too will file a complaint.

I may also open a problem with Mastodon. Mastodon should not return a 500 error unless there really is a problem with the server. It probably should be returning some type of 400 error instead. It's possible I didn't configure something correctly, although I think it's likely a Mastodon issue they didn't account for.

Being behind Cloudflare, it's not that easy. I only see which reverse proxy people come in from. I don't have their originating IP address.

And if they are doing something like this, they probably used a VPN to login and set up an account to hide their IP.

There's an ID though in one of the API calls, and I'm wondering if it is actually an ID that could be used to identify the account in the database they are trying to referene, which might be their own? I was thinking of investigating this on the weekend.

    The first post of this new account on this instance may have resolved a problem I've been trying to figure out for over 2 years! Fingers crossed!

    While I'm not using Kodi, I have been having these random crashes.

    My sysctl.conf didn't have a value for vm.max_map_count, but when I ran "sudo cat /proc/sys/vm/max_map_count" I saw it was set to the default of 65,530.

    I followed the instructions in the post.

    Now I wait and see with great hope!

    I never liked the changes Microsoft made to the Start menu with 10 and 11. Now they want to add advertising, which, for now, you can disable, but still...

    I've been using Start11 for years on my Windows machines to replace the start menu and task bar that comes with Windows. It's quite inexpensive, and it gives me a start menu and task bar as I like it. There are a ton of customizations.

    My daughter's music group, , in Japan, on June 7th, will release an album through Universal Music Japan, titled, , which translates to Phoenix, Firebird, Immortal Bird. In Japanese culture, it's also a symbol of hope and renewal.

    They'll be touring later as well through Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya.

    I'm so incredibly proud of Rina. She has amazing music talent and her music career is doing so great! She's the one in the middle in the group picture.

    "Phoenix" was the life's work of Japan's world-renowned artist Osamu , This is an official album produced with Tezuka Productions.

    The album's preface has comments from Osamu Tezuka's eldest daughter, Rumiko Tezuka.
