I took a new (to me) lens to San Francisco, the Canon FD 50mm/1.4, which I haven't had a chance to test before going (which I in hindsight realized was not very wise). I shot 4 rolls of film on the trip. Eagerly awaiting the scans to come back from the lab...

Back home after a very busy week in San Francisco. I spoke with @caseynewton, @mmasnick, @harrymccracken, @laurengoode, @chrismessina, @Markoff and so many others. In an age where the old web is gradually getting killed off by AI, there is still hope for the future in the shape of the fediverse.

When I worked on the Metaverse, I talked with developers about whether generative AI would make creating games cheaper and they disagreed.

They also quoted the example of CGI in Hollywood movies. It simply raised the bar on expectations versus enabling cheaper special effects.

Now that I'm back into film photography I was thinking of doing a bit of camera collecting, but cameras are relatively expensive. I thought about getting a guidebook or catalog about old cameras to know more about what to look for, but even the guidebooks are expensive!

AI voiced audiobooks have been a boon to indie creators by giving them access to the audiobook market without having to paying for studio time for human narrators.

It means there’s now even more content for readers that needs filtering and narrators are losing gigs. This is what looks like. Two steps forward and one step back.

Oh boy! Got sucked back into IG after winning an image comp there. I still have contacts there that I don't want to lose but they are not here. Same with bsky. It's frustrating me and I've neglected engaging here and I don't want to share the same stuff everywhere. How's everybody else doing? 🤷‍♂️

@apkeedle I don't really get why people share their art and photography on Instagram, when the image quality is so bad and there's no way to zoom in. Sure it's a way to get big numbers but not to actually view the work in a comfortable way.

@steve I understand your skepticism but I looked up the director of photography Ewan Ogden and found a post on his Instagram where he credits a lab for scanning the 16mm film and Kodak for the film stock for this music video.

@blogdiva @benroyce Kant was born in Königsberg, which is now known as Kaliningrad. It is a port city on the Baltic Sea situated north of Poland. It used to belong to Germany until it changed hands in World War 2. Crimea is somewhere else. Not to take away from anything else you've said.

@Gargron A US based 501(c)3 lets you accept US donations that are tax deductible. It doesn't grant any magic powers to Americans, or tech companies, or even Silicon Valley.

Being able to accept donations from US citizens in a tax deductible way, gives Mastodon more chance of surviving without needing to resort to VC driven commercialization, or block chain schemes. This is a good thing.

I get that people are (rightfully!) suspicious of any change, especially those that involve boards.

@aenea Angel investing is not the same thing as venture capital. Venture capital firms are a specific thing, and Biz is not part of that thing. Myself and other board members also disagree with Amir about AI. But he cares about Mastodon and he brings a lot of irreplaceable experience in law.

Hey @Gargron quick question, why is Biz Stone on the US non-profit board for Mastodon? He’s clearly still invested in Twitter and Instagram as platforms, posting at both places but only uses Mastodon to syndicate his Medium posts. I’m not seeing any action to indicate any passion or interest in the fediverse whatsoever.

It’s curious, is all.

The blogging platform is working on adding integration. That means, among other things, being able to follow Ghost-powered blogs and comment on articles right from your Mastodon account. The website they made to explain their plans is really nice! This is what momentum looks like.
