If you watched movies and TV in the 1980s, you knew Dabney Coleman for his comic roles in “9 to 5,” “Tootsie,” and “Buffalo Bill.” Coleman died Thursday at 92, his daughter Quincy Coleman told The Hollywood Reporter. “My father crafted his time here on Earth with a curious mind, a generous heart and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity,” she said in a statement. From Lily Tomlin to Ben Stiller, fellow actors are also paying tribute to the award-winning actor. THR has more: https://flip.it/huRaxh #Culture#Entertainment#TV#Movies
“The Surfer” is a movie about male anxiety, male power, male midlife crisis, male rituals of pain and dominance. Who better to play the title character than Nicolas Cage? Read Variety’s review, which calls the film “the kind of trippy slapdash comic nightmare where the only way to watch it is to sit back and 'go with it.' ” https://flip.it/Mnruzf #Culture#Entertainment#Movies#NicolasCage
"Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" is out and according to the A.V. Club's Tara Bennett (not usually a fan of prequels), it's good. Here's her review of the movie, which stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. We want to know: Which of these George Miller movies is your favorite?
#OnThisDay, May 16, 1568, Mary, Queen of Scots fled to England seeking the protection of her first cousin once removed, Queen Elizabeth I (depicted in Mary Queen of Scots, 2018)
Saw THE BEEKEEPER (2024) last night. I, of course, loved this movie. I will watch anything with Jason Statham (I'm not the only one as it turned out after the movie was over last night. 😆).
I also got a kick out of the movie as a medievalist. Apparently, there is a secret society of assassins called Beekeepers, who protect human civilization based on the idea that it is like a beehive.
Alright it is twenty minutes until #MONSTERDON, which means if you don't want to see a bunch of nerds watching a monster movie you should set up a filter!
Very sad news for movie lovers: the legendary Roger Corman has died at age 98. Here's a tribute to him from Variety. Tell us what you loved about Corman in the comments.
Is this a sign of the times for the movie business and creative professions in general? The Art Directors Guild (ADG) has suspended its Production Design Initiative program, which gives people hands-on training and job placements, saying, "we cannot in good conscience encourage you to pursue our profession while so many of our members remain unemployed.” The unemployment rate for members of the ADG currently stands at 75 percent. Here's more from IndieWire.
"Let It Be," restored by Peter Jackson and the team that worked on "The Beatles: Get Back," will be released on Disney+ tomorrow (May 8). Variety's Owen Gleiberman compares the new version to the original, which he first watched in the summer of 1970, and says it's "one of the most joyful rock documentaries ever made." What do you think of the constant repackaging of the Beatles archive?
Ooooooh! Our first 50/50 split on a poll. Exactly half of voters are all for the constant repackaging of the Beatles archive, and the rest say let it be. Here's an interview from Paste Magazine with "Let It Be" director Michael Lindsay-Hogg about the unearthing and restoration of his Oscar-winning documentary.
@franciscawrites@bookstodon El Sur/ The South by Adelaida Garcia Morales was made into a film of the same name by her then husband, Victor Erice. OK, technically it’s a novella, but at 50 pages I’ve read longer short stories. I actually started reading the novella last night, because I love the film, but finances were pulled from the movie production before the final third could be made, and I’ve always longed to find out what happened.
The collar has a bit of a New 52 vibe, and the logo is very 'Kingdom Come'.
It's been heavily hinted that the film will draw at least some inspiration from Grant Morrison's 'All-Star Superman', which is a series that really captures the heart and compassionate nature of the character. Hopefully the movie will pull that off too.
At this stage everything is just speculation, really, but I'm glad that they are seemingly bringing back the red trunks.
Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best says his career "began and ended" with "Star Wars." As "Phantom Menace" celebrates its 25th anniversary, he told People magazine "Everybody came for me ... I'm the first person to do this kind of work, but I was also the first Black person, Black man." He remembers being ostracized from motion-capture work after the movie came out, but forged a new career as an educator and co-founder of the AfroRithm Futures Group. Here's more.
Stunt doubles are highly skilled and trained professionals who are often at risk through their work, but part of their job is staying away from fame. “Anonymity has always been the contract that we’ve agreed to, and it’s partly for the audience’s benefit,” says David Leitch, director of "The Fall Guy," who was Brad Pitt's stunt double for a decade. The Hollywood Reporter talked to him and Ben Jenkin, Logan Holladay and Chris O’Hara, three of the stunt performers from "The Fall Guy" about how they created the movie's action sequences, and the fight to get industry recognition for their profession. Tell us in the comments what you think the greatest stunt in movie history is.
If I were to quibble, I'd say this dreamy thriller wobbles when it delights too much in the archetypical Lou Sr. But Stewart and O'Brian embody lovers with enough sustenance to make this romance a worthy companion to 1996's Bound, albeit one with a heavier dose of derangement.
A new genre of cookbooks is providing recipes for all your favorite TV and movie meals, from the hobbits' lembas bread and the pies of Azeroth to Monica's onion galette from "Friends." Some of the biggest of these books sell hundreds of thousands of copies. Esquire's Callum Bains talked to recipe developers about the challenges of re-creating fictional food, and why they think people are interested in eating it. “It’s just a whole other way to cosplay,” says Elena Craig, who’s written cookbooks for the worlds of "Harry Potter," "Deadpool," and "Hocus Pocus." We want to know, what do you think is the most delicious TV show or movie? For the purposes of this poll, we're conflating series/franchises and individual movies and TV shows. Tell us in the comments if we've missed a really obvious one!
