The movie «The Day After Tomorrow» is a movie I prefer to avoid.

Why?

It was the movie I watched with a daughter of one of the oldest and largest conglomerate clans.

What's the problem?

I turned her down when she confessed.

If I did not, I would more likely be living like the male lead in the .

The English title sets it as , they should've simply translated it as “The End's Fool” or “An Apocalyptic Fool”; that's the title in Korean & the original Japanese novel . It's a life .

What makes it crazier, in the two official posters from Netflix, they transliterated the original Japanese novel, as if their “English” audience will understand it. They should've transliterated the Korean title instead of using “Goodbye Earth”; since transliteration is fine by them.

Re: K-drama “Vagabond” Season 02 to film in the Philippines.

There appears to be much confusion about this, with most calling it a “rumour”.

A “rumour” is something that is being talked about in whisper, usually without any “notable” source. However, in this particular case, a lot of Philippine news media outlets reported this revelation from a former politician and businessman, Chavit Singson, who claims to be a co-producer.

Philippine news media are members of various legal journalism organisations. If you trust your own local media if they are members of a legal journalism organisation, then I think Philippine media should be accorded the same respect. No one is saying they have not, nor will not, make a mistake. But, at least, give them some credit, no matter what our personal feelings and thoughts about them in other matters (like in politics).

Anyway, instead of calling it a “rumour”, it is more fitting to call it “unconfirmed” or “leak”. I think the latter 99% fits. Why?

Chavit Singson talked to the media about it. He “revealed” it himself, and he claimed he is the co-producer. He also revealed that the writers of Vagabond Season 02 visited the Philippines in 2023, looking for filming locations.

Since he was the first to break this news, then it is a “leak” rather than a “rumour”. Regardless of my personal feelings and thoughts about the man, I doubt he'll risk his political and business reputation for a K-drama. I mean, if you are going to put your reputation on the line, would you do it for a TV show or for something bigger and more significant?

Also, think about it this way:

  • If Chavit Singson was lying about it, then he will be roasted alive by mass media. From notable media outfits to social media. We all know what happens if one lies to, and use, the media.
  • If he was not lying about it, but the project doesn't push through because of his early revelation (or “leak”), then the fans will roast him instead. Still, we cannot fault him for that other than “being too excited” about it. The ultimate decision lies with the production team, and the actors, producers can only do so much.

Him as a businessman, I think it was a calculated move to “leak” it at this time. They probably have reached a MOA (Memorandum of Agreement) already, thus, he is confident it will push through. Leaking it may increase support for it, especially in Korea, where the ultimate decision lies. Imagine if it doesn't push through, Chavit Singson can explain that the powers-that-be in Korea decided against it. So, yeah, strategic leak; or strategic early announcement.

Obviously, the production team cannot leak anything, and it is better for them to have a plausible deniability about any leaks or agreements. They want to film in the Philippines, they got support from Chavit Singson, now they just have to convince the powers-that-be in Korea. Hence, the “leak”, not a “rumour”. Get everyone to talk about it, and use it to convince the powers-that-be in Korea to green lit the project and to film in the Philippines.

For those of you not aware, there is a whole genre of Korean historical fiction about the invention of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, because the real-life story behind the invention of Hangeul is “an incredibly sophisticated and super-secret linguistics project carried out centuries before the field of linguistics was actually invented.”

It was also revolutionary in that it made literacy accessible to commoners who didn’t have the resources to learn Chinese.

This is a story that hardly needs dramatization, but there is nonetheless a lot of dramatization, and I am such a nerd I will watch any dramatized version of the invention of Hangeul.

So, that said, TREE WITH DEEP ROOTS is more hardcore about the invention of Hangeul than THE KING’S LETTERS although TREE WITH DEEP ROOTS is older.

THE KING’S LETTERS has King Sejong secretly teaming up with Buddhist monks.

In TREE WITH DEEP ROOTS his work is organized into cells of scholars who don’t know the whole scope of the project, and there is a scene involving a dissection (which would have been sacreligious in a Confucian country back then) so he can diagram the anatomy of the mouth and throat.

  1. They established that “Vincenzo” (빈센조) and “Queen of Tears” (눈물의 여왕) are in a shared world.

While this was not the first, this is still very good. It means that more and more Korean producers are expanding their creativity. This can later open up an interesting interconnection between different stories.

  1. It was a very sweet “I told you so” moment for the main male character.

While most would not understand, and get irritated, that the main male character was simply accepting the humiliation, discrimination, and everything, against him by the rich and wealthy people, especially his ex-in-laws, he was right in the end to endure it. It was not exactly for them, it was for his ex-wife.

He still loves his ex-wife, and his divorce was clearly made clear that it was because they had irreconcilable differences after they had a stillbirth. Most, if not all, couples experience major changes in their relationship, especially with the mother who's closely connected to the child in her womb.

Thus, even after their divorce, he remained with his ex-in-laws's company, just to be close to his ex-wife and protect her.

Unfortunately, no one wants to believe him. They wouldn't even listen to him when he said he has nothing to do with the bugging of their rooms. And the grandfather/chairman even fired him after he repeatedly warned them not to enter certain business transactions.

In the end, he was proven right.

  1. The rich and wealthy family crashed down very hard. From the very top, to the very bottom.

The only person they can rely on was no other than the ex-husband. The very person they accused of spying on them. They very person the chairman/grandfather fired and refused to listen. That same person who divorced their daughter yet still stayed in their company for their daughter.

The family that was once at the very top of society is now at the very bottom; and their only option to hide was at a far province where the ex-husband grew up.

It was a moment of “I told you so, and you're lucky I stayed with you despite everything you did to me”.

I really loved today's show, in part because of the Vincenzo cameo. More importantly, there were a LOT of brief encounters that showed the depth of the feelings that both main characters have for each other. They were subtle and lovely. I especially loved the scene of her crossing the bridge into her newly divorced life, while watching the commuter train that she took with her sweetheart, enjoying the sunset.

@youronlyone @kdrama @kdrama @asiandrama the family isn't at the bottom. They lost the majority as shareholders, but they're still very wealthy. They hide only to avoid facing public humiliation, yet they're still rich property owners, they still hold precious shares and they have all the financial means to get back their power.

18+ s1m0n4 ,
@s1m0n4@ohai.social avatar

@youronlyone @kdrama @kdrama @asiandrama As far I understood the investigation concerns the grand father and his mistress. The others didn't want to take the blame. All the members of the family were removed from their positions because those positions are decided by the major shareholders. I suppose Hyun-woo is the only one who didn't get fired, since he's team leader and he has a regular contract he couldn't be fired by the grandfather either.

I think that the family is still very well-off, even though some of their major assets may have been sold off or frozen. Still, they've been accustomed to having "people" to deal with every minor aspect of their lives as well as living in a private compound, so living in someone else's space, in the countryside will be a huge adjustment!

Feedback 1: No reason to copy the Korean pinky swear. The thumb step is a Korean culture to seal agreements. But it's fine. A good nod to the original. ^_^

Feedback 2: Seatbelts, even for passengers on the back. Shows are a good opportunity to instil the importance of seatbelts in the people's mind.
