You can look for specific games on protondb.com to get a good idea of how they run.

I don't chase high-end PC gaming anywhere near enough to name a single game that is known for realism.

PlasticExistence ,

Dreaming of the reality where we got at least four years of Larry David playing Bernie on SNL...

I think epoxy is the best bet, but next time you need to use super glue, try adding baking soda to the mix. It makes super glue much stronger.

PlasticExistence ,

I may be against the fur trade, but that won't stop me from skinning you alive!

What viruses do you think you're going to catch on a Linux host? Nobody is packing Linux viruses into torrents so they might affect the < 1% of people who download it.

I mostly pay for games, but this is a really dumb take.

PlasticExistence ,

So then you should know how to scan for viruses before you execute anything.

Your argument is that torrents = viruses, which is also wrong.

PlasticExistence ,

Perfect security is impossible. It's always a trade off between convenience and assurance. Can you be 100% certain that the official source of software hasn't been compromised? Remember CCleaner for Windows? It was distributing malware at one point.

I cannot purchase certain games any longer, for instance Outrun 2006. A downloaded copy is the only reasonable option. Purchasing a used copy doesn't benefit the rights holder, so I don't bother.

Take reasonable steps to limit any access the program would have - scan files, use a separate limited-rights user, a sandbox, etc. - and live your life.

PlasticExistence ,

Right, agreed. I basically just said that last part to someone else.

The problem with seeing danger in every shadow is that you'll never feel safe is safe enough. There is only so much a person can do to protect themselves, but there comes a point where you've made everything so inconvenient for the sake of security that you can't just live your life. Take reasonable steps and don't worry beyond that.

PlasticExistence ,

Agreed.

From the article:

And to Grant's point, the next day, you'll feel like you can take the afternoon off to take the kids to the park or enjoy a bike ride on the beach. This is what having a healthy, productive life looks like. You work your butt off first, and then take time to reward yourself later.

If that time off is approved and not caught in the typical bureaucratic corporate time off request processes.

If you have the time off to use.

If you aren't rewarded for your competency by being given additional work because your coworkers who can't hit that "Flow" state are just allowed to be that way.

Fuck this article.

PlasticExistence ,

The original Klingon is obviously the correct version.

PlasticExistence OP ,

Dang. I should have posted this sooner.

PlasticExistence OP ,

It is not the print bed side that you're seeing. It's also a fairly close up pic, and then I cropped out more. The lines aren't as prominent in person at arms length.

The print bed side is nice and smooth and looks better than this. I had a couple of minor issues getting this printed that also contributed to the top layers not looking their absolute best, but even if they did, you would still be seeing the print lines. There's not a lot that can be done about that. 3D printing is a prototyping technology, after all.

What I did here was to make the white rectangle the first color (Esun PLA+ Cool White), then at a certain layer height - I think 2mm - I unloaded the white filament, swapped to a blue silk filament and resumed the print. So all the blue you see is sitting on top of the white.

Some people have printers that can automatically swap between filaments, and therefore they can "paint" prints like this to be the full yellow, blue, white and black that you see elsewhere. Those can be expensive and hard to operate though, so I don't own one. I sure would like that capability though.

PlasticExistence OP ,

Yeah, that's something you could do, but getting the individual parts all aligned properly and glued down would be a pain. I guess it would be possible to print a tool to make it easier, but that's certainly a lot more work.

PlasticExistence OP ,

If you have the CAD files, not hard. That's most often not the case if you downloaded the model from a site like printables.com or thingiverse.com, as I did with this model.

Some slicer programs might let you do that too, but probably not as easily or as well as CAD software.

PlasticExistence OP ,

Well you know it's very hard to get 3D printing enthusiasts to talk about 3D printing.

PlasticExistence OP ,

As the British would say, I'm chuffed that you noticed. Thank you!

PlasticExistence OP ,

The important thing is that they're a partnership, and any split is catastrophic.

If Reddit had a soul/conscience, I think it was us, and we're all on Lemmy now...

As a little background, I didn't actively use Reddit for months following the blackout. I still barely stop in over there and if I do I'm never logged in our contributing to the communities there (where I was previously a daily poster/commenter)....

PlasticExistence ,

I find the comments here in the fediverse are of a higher overall quality, like Reddit once was over a decade ago.

Salamander speed? Sir, we've never gone that fast before. I don't know if this ship can take it.

Struggling to tolerate wife's haircut

I typically don't care about things like hairstyle, makeup or clothes. But my wife has started giving herself a buzz cut and I simply hate it. I told her and she grew it out for a while, but she said longer hair was making her depressed and it needed to be a buzz cut. She said it just looks like her when she sees it. Part of me...

PlasticExistence , (edited )

It's time for therapy because I would bet money you've got other issues that you need to dig into for the sake of your kids. The haircut is just the visible manifestation of some other problems you have with her, namely that you've already stated that you would end the marriage if she were to simply admit she's trans.

I'm not judging you at all. Relationships are complicated and constantly evolving. It's possible you've both grown in different directions that are incompatible. It's also possible you just need to talk some things out.

I wish you the best either way.

PlasticExistence ,

A tire rod snapping is no joke. An 18 wheeler flipped over outside of my workplace on Monday because of that. Nobody was seriously hurt, fortunately. It took hours to get it cleared up.

Android runs on the Linux kernel, so it's Linux. You could consider it a distribution with almost none of the normal packages a standard Linux distribution would include, but it's still Linux at the core.

PlasticExistence ,

Stallman has absolutely no say about what makes Linux. His tools, though important to the free software movement, are not necessary to create a Linux distribution.

There is NO GNU/Linux. Stallman doesn't get to name or claim ownership of someone else's baby. It's Linux, so named by its creator.

The Lemmy technology permits us to do very exciting things in interactive erotic software. Wave of the future, Dude. 100% electronic.

PlasticExistence OP ,

Ah heh, ha ha Of course you do, SatansMaggotyCumFart

PlasticExistence OP ,

I wouldn't know, SatansMaggotyCumFart. I deal in shitposting, entertainment, political commentary.

PlasticExistence OP ,

Regrettably, OC submissions have fallen.

PlasticExistence OP ,

I know my rights, man.

PlasticExistence OP ,

Oh uh, yeah. Uh, a tape deck. Some Creedence tapes. And there was a, uh. . .uh my briefcase.

No sooner than Greene triggered the vote on her motion to vacate the speaker from his office, the Republican Majority Leader Steve Scalise countered by calling first for a vote to table it.

An overwhelming majority, 359-43, kept Johnson in his job, for now.

The House voted nearly immediately to resolve something. How often does that happen? That is a resounding rejection.

There are mechanisms for Congress to expell members, but that's unlikely to come up Santos for her.

PlasticExistence ,

And that was a big step above just trying to get Wine configured to play games. I did that once way back. It was just too much work for worse performance than Windows. I'm sure there were Linux wizards out there who did a better job getting their games working in Linux than I did.

Now I'm primarily enjoying PC games on a Steam Deck with almost no configuration needed. Amazing!

PlasticExistence ,

I've been doing this in EarthBound with the favorite food since 1995. I'll never not think it's funny.

PlasticExistence ,

I chuckled, so you got an upvote, but I'm unhappy about it.

Update available! This version is very old.

Xscreensaver has apparently been checking for updates and is disappointed that it hasn't had one for 14 months because Debian is too stable. Can anyone recommend a linux screensaver which would work with xfce and can be trusted to never do that?

PlasticExistence ,

Wayland does not support screen savers: it does not have any provision that allows screen savers to even exist in any meaningful way. If you value screen savers, that's kind of a problem.

Why doesn't it? Well, I suppose the designers of Wayland have no joy in their cold, black hearts simply do not value screen savers.

They go on to explain that the security model of Wayland is better than X in this regard, yet instead of writing code to improve what they see as deficiencies, they bitch and throw insults.

This is not the way to effect change. Oh, you're being ignored? Maybe try having more emotional maturity than a 12 year old.

PlasticExistence ,

Things are moving steadily towards Wayland because Wayland has been steadily improving. In some aspects, it's currently better than X. Valve certainly thinks so because they use Wayland for the Gaming mode on their Steam Deck.

Some people hate change enough that they'll blind themselves to that being their core issue, and instead they'll focus on the imperfect as their argument that things shouldn't change.

Screensavers aren't anywhere near as important as they once were since display tech is different now, so if Wayland devs aren't focusing on them, maybe it's not such a big deal. X11 isn't going to disappear overnight, so if you don't want to use Wayland, then don't!

PlasticExistence ,

Old dev angry new dev work not exactly as they want it.

Film at 11.

PlasticExistence ,

Absolutely. I still miss my After Dark screensavers from Windows 3.1. They can be fun and add a lot of character to a desktop computer.

I hope it gets support too. X didn't get all its features overnight, and Wayland won't either.
