@jessamyn Yes, very deceiving from the bottom. More technically challenging than most of the trails I hike in the White Mountains.

Oh, today is my 8th anniversary of working on Mastodon. I was 23 when I started, finishing my last year of university, still living at my parent's place. I had no idea what I was getting myself into or that it would consume the next 8 years of my life almost completely.

@Gargron Thank you for your great vision and hard work making Mastodon what it is today! 👍

2/ This snowshoeing trip marked a milestone for me—it was the first time that I have summited a mountain on snowshoes. It was only several years ago that I first hit the wintry mountain trails by snowshoe. Going solo and without formal instruction, I proceeded extremely cautiously, doing many repetitions on easier, moderate-slope trails and only going relatively short distances, turning around well before a summit. 3/ As I gained experienced, I tried short steeper sections of trails. Between hikes, I went through tutorials on winter hiking in the mountains with the various types of traction.

In spite of how technically easy these early trips were, I was not close to being in "snowshoeing shape". I was tired at my turnaround point and ready to return home. Wanting to get into better shape, I ramped up my workouts, focusing more on strengthening my legs and increasing my aerobic conditioning. (CONT)

4/ Trial run: Last November, I took a trial hike on a snowy trail that I had identified as being within my technical abilities for snowshoeing. With only a small amount of snow, I could safely get to the summit with bareboots or microspikes. It was this trail that I snowshoed last week in full winter conditions. Results: I not only made it to the summit, but I was never completely gassed at any point of the trip (just winded on the steep sections, requiring short breaks). (CONT)

5/ Upon returning home from snowshoeing to the summit, I wasn't very sore, just a bit stiff. After a two-day break, I am now back to my workouts again, building on what I learned to get to this point. I am thrilled with my new abilities (both technically on snowshoes and my physical condition). I’m looking forward to hitting the mountains again! (END)

@jessamyn Thanks! One of those things I said I would "never" do. Moral to story, never say "never"!
