It would only regulate bodies in regards to labor, which is something we already do in other industries. We allow or even mandate drug tests for employment, something that is occasionally justifiable for certain professions. We already regulate out of work activities that could affect job safety, so prostitution wouldn't introduce anything new. Most of the harmful things that could arise from regulation aren't unique to sex work

I can never get myself to do totally evil playthroughs in most games. I feel so bad when I'm forced to choose between two terrible options that I avoid games where I have to do that. I struggle to start the Witcher, FO:NV, or other great games because of those tough choices. I enjoy playing games that railroad you into being good more than games that challenge you.

I over empathize with characters for some reason, struggling to watch them experience well written conflict. I get more stressed out watching new children's movies or sitcoms than watching a Clockwork Orange. It doesn't matter if I know characters will be alright because of the genre; I need to know the exact ending to enjoy most media. I prefer to hear spoilers because I experience less stress as a result. I often don't watch new things without hearing spoilers beforehand.

People are afraid of being enslaved by something intelligent when we're already enslaved by unintelligent systems. Capitalism, imperialism, culture, even evolution itself. These forces already control us, reducing our lives to mere mechanical functions. There isn't a being in control of these systems, but they still devalue us as people. No artificial intelligence will ever dominate us like natural unintelligence.

TotallynotJessica ,
@TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world avatar

Evolution created everything about us to survive long enough to reproduce. It might have created all positive emotions we can ever experience, but it's often advantageous for evolution to design suffering into our lives.

Many animals live short and brutal lives, giving birth through penises, fighting amongst each other to stay on top of violent hierarchies, cheating on their mates whenever possible. Most people are less happy after having children, but knowing that rarely affects our decision to have them. Love often encourages us to enter toxic relationships, taking away our infatuation and rose tinted glasses once leaving the relationship is costly.

About half of all humans are designed to take serious risks to gain status or resources, their bodies aging quicker and doing less to repair itself. The other half gets to live a little longer and be a little healthier, but once they stop being able to have kids, their bodies start breaking down more quickly to hasten their end. Even aging itself only exists to speed up the evolutionary process. Evolution generally wants us to live lives that are as short as possible to allow for more generations in less time.

Evolution is what created all our drives and programs us to do everything we do. That isn't necessarily enslavement by itself, as nothing about us can exist outside of evolution, but the way it drives us towards personal suffering and death is enslavement. We don't matter in comparison to our role in replicating genes. We're designed to be disposable. Evolution may be the process of life, but it's also the process of death.

Evolution may not want, but certain strategies are more successful than others in specific contexts. Long lived animals still age, only seeming so long lived relative to us. Aging is a balancing act of the benefits of generational iterations vs the value of experience.

Toxic relationships don't require manipulation on the part of one person. Infatuation can lead people with incompatible personalities to make costly commitments to each other. Partners can genuinely treat each other with respect and still end up in relationships that harm all parties.

This comes back to the social construction of gender roles, even though I mostly focused on the well accepted effects of primary sex hormones. There are biological factors that limit the gender identities and expressions we can comfortably be. Some people feel comfortable with a wide range of identities, while others are more limited. If anything, seeing one's gender as so maliable to social influence implies that conversion therapy would be effective and validates the idea of trans identities are a social contagion

The constructed nature of gender comes from the constructed nature of essence. Our brains understand the world by constructing a model of reality based on these essences, qualia, or forms. Gender is the simplified categorization of social dynamics, but so are all ideas we could ever use to describe society.

The way I see it, most people try to do what they see as "the right thing," but their understanding of right and wrong itself is often evil. Most harm is done with the best of intentions by people who don't realize the evil of their beliefs.

For example, I realized that the American liberals who support Israeli fascists probably haven't accepted that those Israelis are fascists. They try to "use diplomacy" and "apply pressure" to Netanyahu, but that strategy cannot work against fascists. As easy as it might be to think Biden is aware of what he's supporting, I think his administration is more likely in denial. They thought a middle path existed where they can both support Israel and not support a genocide. People who accepted that those Zionists were genocidal fascists years ago knew that option never existed.

The sad truth is that most people earnestly believe the shit they spew. Even if you start off aware of your lie, at a certain point, you'll internalize it by repeating it so often. It's best to assume that on some level, everyone believes what they repeatedly say. They may value certain arguments more than their literal arguments, but they might not even be aware that they do. Contradictions in their logic doesn't mean the logic isn't believed. Humans aren't consistent like that.

It's hard to know how everyone's bodies will react, but it's also important to consider the purely psychological effects. Even social transition changed things, at least for me. Seeing myself differently somehow affected the way it feels and how long they last. I started to ejaculate without orgasm, experiencing a more intense orgasm once it finally happened. Orgasms are confusing.

Weird Christian propaganda actually using a based Bible quote for once?

Idk. That description sounds like it applies to the JKR and Musks of the world. There are probably more happy rich people than poor people, but many of them aren't happy because happiness is hard for everyone.

Not sure about only trusting the church or giving them your money. A ton of church practices like forced conversion go against what he preached. He wanted people to choose God, while one should give their wealth to the cause of building a better world rather than the church. The good Samaritan nonbelievers were better than people who only followed in word alone.

TotallynotJessica ,
@TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world avatar

A huge part of the bible is about being submissive, obedient, and turning the other cheek. The whole point of organized religion is to keep the masses under the yoke of the powerful.

You're not wrong, but Jesus had some decent ideas, even if they were mostly coopted to support the system. The tragedy of Christ is how his good ideas were used to sanitize a selfish war God enough to help him conquer the world.

It's not as black and white as NT good, OT bad, but Jesus's message of love and forgiveness helped Christianity dominate enough to change how most people thought about gods. In the OT, God is the only one you're supposed to worship, but other gods are explicitly mentioned. The dedication to a single God that helped Judaism survive in perpetual exile allowed the Romans to centralize power better than their previous pantheon could. Even the practices of those who hated the new church were eventually used to create elite monastic orders.

Christians can embody the virtues of their faith, but it isn't something most people can or will do. Just like with Marx's work, people can take helpful lessons from the text, or they can be led against those helpful lessons by the text. Any good meme can be coopted to serve selfish will to power. Any truth can be used to obscure reality. Any value can be turned against itself. We will never be above this self deception, but we can resist it by always questioning our understanding.

I wish I could have experienced being a girl going through school. Those years always felt so wasted and lonely. Maybe I'd still be lonely and insecure, but I can't imagine it'd be as empty or hopeless if I didn't have a constant sense of wrongness.

I never felt like dating because I hated the idea of making the first move. I always felt out of place with the guys and couldn't easily understand them. Why couldn't they just talk about their fucking feelings? Why did there always have to be layers of sarcasm and irony if we were talking in a group? So fucking strange how they saw women as mysterious when they were opaque themselves.

I fucking wish I got to date boys instead of trying to be one. I would probably have still struggled with girl attraction, but at least I understand them more easily as friends. I could enjoy dumb shit like carrying on conversations in the bathroom. When I wasn't a part of it, I wondered what they talked about. Now that I've heard them and talked with my mom from separate stalls, I realize they didn't talk about anything special. There's no mystery, it's just any other menial conversation about life, and yet, it doesn't seem weird in the slightest to have it while on the toilet. When you gotta talk, you gotta talk.

I'm honestly amazed that I even pieced things together eventually. I had no idea that I would feel better as a girl because I didn't get to do girly things. My parents are both somewhat nonconforming, so I didn't think that gender could make such a difference in my life. I guess it still took 5 years, but given that I started from not having the faintest clue, I remain impressed.

Me the next time they acknowledge my existence:

He was less invested in those causes at that point than he was in progressive labor policies. As far as evolution and prohibition go, he had some understandable motivations. Alcohol causes terrible harm and he also worked to improve the conditions that drive people to addiction. Evolution was promoted by social darwinists to justify capitalist exploitation. He was less of a YEC by today's standards, even if he was wrong.

He didn't know how much prohibition would fail beforehand, and his opposition to evolution touches on an important assumption people make about nature. Most people assume that something being natural makes it good, but evolution shows how misguided that assumption is.

Evolution is a process fuelled by death, where no individual matters and we are only servants to a soulless machine. We only grow old and die to help evolution work faster. Most suffering serves our genes rather than us as people. Capitalism sucks because of the ways it resembles evolution, turning every element of our existence into a mechanical processes. Evolution dangles happiness in front of us to get us to serve it.

WJB just couldn't accept that nature is so cruel, that we're machines produced by a process that only advances through death. Most religious people still need to square this reality with their understanding of a creator deity worthy of worship. I respect the concept of God more as our creation of than as our creator. If it were to represent our common personhood instead of our evolved species, it would actually be worth serving.
