American wanting to move abroad, what's the best bet for an registered nurse?

Hi there, I'm a registered nurse in Phoenix, Arizona and I'm seriously considering moving abroad because this country is driving me insane for a lot of reasons. I was considering moving to Israel since I'm Jewish and I've heard they have a better healthcare system there and pay nurses well but this war has made me not really...

Israeli politics have been fucked for a long time. Netanyahu has always been a dangerous extremist, and the fact that people repeatedly voted for him speaks volumes for the political culture.

In Germany? You'll be fine, they're very aware of the threat of antisemitism but it's not any worse than elsewhere.

Now, whether German culture is enjoyable is another question.

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

I'd consider Bolzano. You'd get by with German, and you get to live in a beautiful part of the arguably most beautiful country of Europe.

I think, like so many other realities of American politics, it needs to be understood as a sad reflection of America itself.

RFK Jr. caters to a specific branch of the mentally ill, but in a country with severe social problems and unavailable mental health care services this is not such a tiny niche. COVID sent a lot of people over the edge, and an anti-vaccine candidate in it's wake is bound to do well.

Combine this with the fact that conspiratorially minded Americans are obsessed with the Kennedys, and you have yourself a candidate who appeals strongly to a non-negligible part of the population.

Will I ever be seen as truly British?

My family immigrated to the UK from Poland when I was six. I'm 20 now, speak much better English than Polish and feel like this is my land/culture. However I have a Polish first and last name, Polish passport and "unique" accent everyone picks up on, so despite this I'm usually perceived as an outsider. It makes me really sad...

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

You'll never be anything less than what you are, but that's a strength. Just speaking two languages well already puts you at an advantage. The experiences you have of seeing the cultures in relation to each other also gives you an edge.

Sometimes it's nice to be able to just blend in, but life is all about learning and gathering experiences and impressions, and you have a head start. It might not always be easy, but you'll learn to appreciate it.

And as long as Poland is in the EU I'd much rather have a Polish passport than an English one.

Progressive tax is normal in most functional countries, it's not rocket science.

Basically you define X as a base sum that needs to be controlled for inflation. Minimum wage can be 2X, whereas 100% taxation might be reached at an income of 300X. In this scenario, nobody could earn more than 150 times minimum wage, and manipulating the calculation of X to make the rich richer would also benefit everyone else.

A bigger challenge is that billionaire scum tend not to have income, only loans, so they don't pay tax at all. But that's also easily fixed if there's political will.

What are the most mindblowingly creative, inventive, or otherwise otherworldly albums you know of?

One of my favorite things to do while stoned is listen to albums that are really unique, artful, and/or jam packed with soul and energy, as in that head space music just hits completely differently and it just lends to me finding a deep love and appreciation for the art of music. What're some of your favorites?

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King.

It's just exploding with creativity and craftsmanship throughout the album. The opening tune (21st Century Schizoid Man) was unlike anything anyone had ever heard at the time it was released, and there's honestly still not much like it out there. And the transition to Moonchild after it is equally mind-blowing just for the contrast alone. The title track remains one of the most incredible things I've heard.

Zappa also has a lot of good candidates for this list. I'm soft for Freak Out, where the madness started, but some might argue something like Joe's Garage is a better example.

The most (only?) surprising thing about this is that Omar has an adult daughter - I thought she was famous for being so incredibly young herself.

Almost as if "young" doesn't really mean anything, and is just used to silence and discredit people (women) one disagrees with.

Almost.

But at the receiving end you'll have a talented backend developer who has created something impressive, and who instead of being recognised and motivated for her work just receives a bunch of shit about the UX being awful. Which is not great either.

It's a tricky thing to get right.

It's an experimental feature. If you post on Beehaw it shows a reminder that Beehaw has a stricter code of conduct than most instances, and remind you to be nice.

PieFed is also developed specifically to be unappealing to tankies and fascists, which I think is generally wise, but of course certain measures might be more successful than others. :)

An idea that has been spinning in my head a bit is to allow people to subscribe to different levels of moderation. Basically allowing users to choose a "curated", "moderate", or "liberal" experience.

Curated: Whitelist of servers rather than blacklist. Well-moderated instances only.

Moderate: Blacklist rather than whitelist, but blocking annoying instances like Lemmygrad and Hexbear. Aiming at a wide yet enjoyable experience.

Liberal: Blacklist, but only blocking instances that allow (or are incapable of handling) content that goes against the content policy.

It's probably more difficult to implement than what it's worth. What I like about it however is that it would make the whole process of content curation much more transparent. Right now it's often not so clear to people signing up to an instance what kind of moderation policy they will be signing up for. At least this would allow the user some agency even after sign-up.

PubKit Officially Launches Closed Beta ( wedistribute.org )

PubKit is a spinoff project from Pixelfed, and is used by the project's lead developer to actually develop Pixelfed. It has some pretty great ideas about mocking up entities and data, testing data streams, and working with different server implementations to see where pieces might differ.

Is there a more politically and ideologically diverse alternative for Lemmy?

I know the real answer is reddit but I really don't want to go back now that I've already grown used to life without it. I was hoping for Lemmy to be a viable substitute but it isn't. Absolutely. There's a small handful of sites full of insufferable stalinists. Thank god I didn't discover Lemmy when I was 14, I might have been swallowed right up.

Just block those instances, your experience will be better immediately. And don't hesitate to block individual users, even if they're not breaking any rules or anything. Finding something to be annoying is plenty of reason not to want it as part of your internet experience.

What worries me more is that Israel has plenty of missiles for both civilians in Gaza and civilians in Iran, and Netanyahu is currently foaming at the mouth over the opportunity to use them.

Russia's first politically motivated block of a Fediverse server ( reestr.rublacklist.net )

Admin team of LGBTQIA.Social Mastodon instance received abuse email from Russian censorship agency, where they demanded to remove an account. The account in question represented a small group that ran a collaborative blog for LGBTQIA youth and adults in Russia....

Obviously they won't give too much of a shit and they're not going to send any mail, they'll just block the server like they would anyway. They are, however, going to be annoyed to be treated as insignificant nobodies. So all in all not a bad idea.

Nothing is found when searching for their names. There's not a thing out there about "Chief Scientist" Mark Linneaus, although he claims to have had an academic career. If he in fact "dedicated more than 20 years to investigating how diet and environment shape mammalian milk production", it is surprising that his name is nowhere to be found on Google Scholar.

Not to get started on the pictures of their alleged cheeses. There's red flags all over the website. At least they don't accept orders, so it looks more like a joke than a scam.

It's a shame though, I would love to try sustainably produced whale cheese.

Which is a radical act to fight tech billionaires like Zuckerberg and Musk. Who have both been reasonably accused of enabling some incredibly awful stuff.

Contributing to the fediverse is probably not the most efficient way to fight for human rights and against billionaires and fascists, but it certainly makes some sort of tiny contribution. So I wouldn't call it pointless. :)

The advent of AI has illustrated quite clearly that nobody cares, but that doesn't make it less legally binding at least in theory.

If you post content clearly marked as CC BY-NC, you can at least be damn sure any use by commercial actors would be illegal.

cabbage ,

I think this is a great idea, and something that should probably be incorporated in a wide variety of ActivityPub integrations.

I know at least Funkwhale already includes license information - maybe it could be integrated in a way that is compatible with how it's solved there?

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

What might have stuck with me the most from Kant is the simple principle of treating people as ends, not as means.

Partly because when reading it I didn't immediately understand the meaning of "ends" in this context, so I had to think about it for a while in order to just understand what was going on. Still though, I think it's a valid principle, and one that everyone should strive to live by.

Let's decide on some development priorities

Until now, development has proceeded pretty loosely - we work on whatever seems cool at the time. This is fine but if we collaborate on a decision about priorities then perhaps we'll all be pulling in the same direction a bit more often. If the decision is made in public with all stakeholders, perhaps we'll get some buy-in....

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

I find my experience here has been mostly solid, so I think you mostly have your priorities right. It's also fun to see experimentation with new features every now and then, so I'm not sure I would even like to see a shift towards focusing only on important stuff.

  • Mastodon integration #101
  • Better handling of video content #147 (I am also interested if PieFed can integrate better with PeerTube, for example an option to browse PeerTube channels)
  • "Announce does not federate properly with Lemmy"
  • Fixing the bug where shared images disappear
  • Account deletion

I think there's a lot of potential in better integration with services outside of the Threadiverse, and this is something Lemmy has been notoriously bad at (and its developers seemingly uninterested in). Not that PieFed should become like Kbin and serve two separate functions, but there's a lot to be achieved in both ends by making the services more interoperable. There might be some sort of place for both boosts and hashtags, while leading @mentions might sometimes be justifiably hidden. More than important I guess I would find it fun.

As for what's urgent, ensuring core functionality and GDPR compliance seems like a fair priority.

  • Account deletion
  • Fix image bug

Not to forget those of us not on lemmy! ;)

In the end what this all produces is freedom of choice - we are no longer constrained to using whatever service has users, but we can use whatever service we want to be using. The users/content will be there independently.

I'm currently 30, and am increasingly confident that 28 was the high point.

cabbage , (edited )
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

In my experience the problem is not really all that age related at all, it's just that you're increasingly aware that you have to find your own meaning in life and that your choices now will directly affect everything that follows.

Age 25 I didn't feel like anything really mattered, I had time to fuck up. Now it feels like I have ten years to find something I consider worthwhile or I'll in all likelihood be permanently fucked.

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

Fair point - but I think that by 2022 it was already fine where I was. I lived in a very touristic city at the time, so the period after I gained freedom of movement before the tourists returned was actually pretty nice as for once it felt like the city belonged to those who lived there.

I also very much felt during the pandemic that I was wasting one of the best years of my life. Still not complaining though - rather that than one of my more formative years.

She's only 69 though. Four justices are younger than her, three are older. She's closer in age to Kamala Harris than she is to Joe Biden.

I get the concern, but at some point it gets silly.

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

I think this is a huge problem in American politics, and Americans really need to get around to elect younger officials asap. Obviously it's not that easy, and the problems run deep.

The supreme court, however, it's the one institution that's kind of intentionally old. They are supposed to be experienced ageing justices at the end of their career.

The problem is not that the supreme court is old as much as that politicians are even older.

Can you help me choose a new Mastodon instance?

I'm currently on TenForward.social, which is great. I have no issues with the users or admin. They're all good people. But I'm more of a casual Trek fan and posting about anything non-Trek-related doesn't seem to be what the other members want to engage with. I like to post about sci fi or horror movies I'm watching, games I'm...

cabbage ,
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

This is key. Also try to figure out which relevant hashtags are being used, and follow and use them.

Finding relevant groups can also be an idea. Tag and follow for example @scifi@a.gup.pe, or even consider if it's worth sharing your post on Lemmy (by tagging for example @sciencefiction@lemmy.world).

Anything can be a group in a.gup.pe, by changing what's been the @s. When you search for a group in Mastodon you'll see how many followers it has. A more integrated group functionality will probably be implemented in Mastodon in the future, but for now that's what we've got. :)

Two shortcomings:

The first is Hur’s description of Biden’s memory, which really does do Biden a bit of an injustice. The second, and more important, of the flaws is Hur’s analysis of a February 2017 comment by the then former vice president that serves as the nexus to some key evidence Hur cites for Biden’s supposed wrongdoing.

In the memory one, Hur writes about how Biden misremembers who said something back in 2009, but fails to mention that Biden corrected himself.

In the evidence one, Hur fails to give context to a quote about "documents downstairs" that is actively used in his report, arguably rendering the use of the quote intentionally misleading.
