@ihatelinux
The promotion of homosexuality to small children may be seen as inappropriate, since you would not promote anything else sexual to a 6-year-old (it is grooming). But for some reason, some extreme-minded people think a kid who does not have any idea of sexuality and does not know how to read yet, should still already choose their sexuality and therefore homosexuality needs some coverage in primary schools and kindergartens. If that's what the line refers to, I think, it's pretty normal.

New iPad Pros are the thinnest Apple device ever, feature dual-OLED screens

They also contain what Apple calls the fastest consumer AI computer you can buy.

@arstechnica Given the quality of apple's AI (so crappy they even open-source it) I'd doubt that ^^'

chepycou ,
@chepycou@rcsocial.net avatar

@boredsquirrel I personally use neither of those, but I've had to fix issues on computers running both.
I can tell that the apple GUI is clumsy, but sadly inevitable when you want to do stuff. I would always lose time trying to tile or move windows without success.
At least in , it's so you can fix everything without being forced into using a badly designed GUI and a lot of things work well. Though you'd better not be looking for some customization on Gnome, but if you bought an apple device you've already kissed customization (and fair prices) goodbye so to me there is no real question between the two in terms of user experience.

@PoliticalAgitator @TheGrandNagus Well, it's mostly because Linux is way newer to the computer scene than microsoft's OS for instance. When started out, computers using msdos were already being shipped for over a decade, and so they were the de facto standard, and it takes time for people to switch to a better product if they are used to another one and have the ecosystem keeps them in (that's the main reason people keep buying overpriced apple products)

chepycou ,
@chepycou@rcsocial.net avatar

@PoliticalAgitator @TheGrandNagus On the contrary, Linux was already here when the need for supercomputers and servers appeared, and that's why most of them run on Linux.

A COBOL programmer, tired of the bug chaos in the legacy codebase, decides to have themselves cryogenically frozen to skip the whole mess. Years later, they're thawed out.

"Did I sleep through?" they ask.

@theshatterstone54 @TwinTusks Did you play against the easy AI ?
Back in the days when I first started I had to play 10 games before I could beat the Ai because I chose the normal mode.

But playing against the easy or very easy AI gives you all the time you need to understand the mechanics

chepycou ,
@chepycou@rcsocial.net avatar

@TwinTusks How does it go ? Is it that you get overrun by a larger army ? Or you have trouble maintaining your economy ?

chepycou ,
@chepycou@rcsocial.net avatar

@TwinTusks Do you research economics/military upgrades enough ? Do you build siege engines/elephant ?

Usually for me the rule of thumb is :

  • no unit that does nothing
  • no building that produces nothing (i.e., try to never get popcapped and always produce, so you need to have all the resources you need to produce)

Asking for a Linux (or non-Windows) laptop during a job interview?

I'm interviewing for a software dev job currently (it's in the initial stages). If things work out, I'd absolutely prefer a work laptop with Linux installed (I personally use PopOS but any distro will do), a Mac will be second choice, but I absolutely cannot tolerate Windows, I abhor it, I hate it... (If all computers left on...

chepycou ,

@carl_dungeon @flakpanzer Personally an apple job would be even lower on my list than a Windows job (which is already a deal-breaker to me)

chepycou ,
@chepycou@rcsocial.net avatar

@pudcollar @flakpanzer Depends, in real computer science companies technical people will use
But if you're not in a really technical company and/or in a not-that-technical division of the company, then I guess it will be BYOD then.

@MajorHavoc Plus it can even be quite ecologically good, the parts are not serialized so you cannot replace them yourself, it almost feels as if you own it (especially once you own the software on it)

@petsoi How does it compare to for instance in terms of quality ?

chepycou ,
@chepycou@rcsocial.net avatar

@Semi-Hemi-Demigod @Artemis_Mystique I totally disagree, I have to troubleshoot software installations for students and help them repair broken devices and I spend most of my time fixing one or two issues for the biology or mathematics students having macs. (And when their computers are broken, well I advise them to buy a new one which they'll be able to get repaired).
It's just not meant for serious computer use, IMO. The only contexts it beats et rivals windows seems to be in creative settings.

chepycou ,
@chepycou@rcsocial.net avatar

@Semi-Hemi-Demigod @Artemis_Mystique Well, maybe the problems the students are facing are due to all of the software that the school uses being incompatible with apple. (Knowing how apple loves to be incompatible themselves, I guess that's quite logical).

And I am sure an experienced user can find workarounds to get the computer to work properly. ( being the first thing that comes to my mind, though I never tried personally because I don't want to contribute to apple's e-waste)

@SubArcticTundra @Haven5341 I personally think Manjaro is a false good idea.

You'll have an “out of date” system (i.e., one-month-old) but packages from the AUR which are made for the up-to-date system.

Quite a nightmare to use IMO (and that's not talking about Manjaro leadership and certificates problems)

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@fuck_cars

chepycou ,
@chepycou@rcsocial.net avatar

@ajsadauskas @fuck_cars can reach all of them, although depends on what is considered a “sport arena”. I'm shocked not to see a “church” as list option, though 🇻🇦

Gentle reminder to everyone that support for ends in about 90 weeks. Many computers can't upgrade to Win 11 so here are your options:

  1. Continue on Win 10 but with higher security risks.
  2. Buy new and expensive hardware that supports Win11.
  3. Try a beginner friendly distro like . It only takes about two months to acclimate.

I'd actually recommend https://wubuntu.org/ instead, because
1 — the interface is, of course, tailored for Windows users
2 — the distro is made in such a way that you can install like you would on windows (double-clicking an EXE installs it through compatibility layers)

What is a distro with updates of Arch but dependencies of Fedora?

I am currently using EndeavourOS, but am annoyed by the constant daily updates of 1GB and pacman not installing important dependencies automatically (ex: spell checker for document editor). I like the way Fedora works: you update whenever, important dependencies are downloaded automatically, and packages are recent-ish, but I...
