He/him.

"Leftist extremist" according to some. I take that as a compliment.
Woke techno-skeptic ≈ Enemy of Marc Andreessen and central risk to Palantir.

Solution architect and #dotnet developer.
Web-based multi-tenant micro-buzz-buzz-buzz for work and #SmallTech for fun.

Profile picture is a smiling white guy with short brown hair in an open black leather jacket with a crowd of people and urban structures in the background. Picture is taken at an angle and framed to show from the chest up.

Every time I take a stab at building for the Fediverse, I'm immediately drained for motivation by the ambiguities and contradictions of the AP/AS2 family of specs.

Oh, you want to do some validation of the actor property of activities posted to the Outbox? Good luck. It can have any number of values, and can even (per examples in the AS2 spec) mention actors from different instances.

Big respect for those of you who muddle through.

Do you use different accounts to separate "aspects" of your life? E.g., one account for shitposting, one for professional posts, and one for your activism?

If so, how is it working out for you? Do each account exist in its own atmosphere with its own vibe? Do you feel you have some control over the crossover between spheres? Are you confident that, e.g., your political posts won't easily be connected to your professional persona?

Just had to design an API for work, and thanks to the painful lessons of ActivityPub, we made sure that specializations of a base type occupied different fields on a wrapper object so it will be easy to deserialize.

People like David will try to stop you from speaking out against Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people.

They’ll try to get others to shun you for showing basic humanity. For speaking out against a state that is has killed tens of thousands of civilians, the majority women and children. A state whose ministers openly call for yet more ethnic cleansing and genocide.

Show them it won’t work.

Don’t be silent.

This seem to be the new talking point among genocide apologists: "Since they could technically level the place immediately, but didn't, they must be showing immense restraint out of concern for civilians".

The stupidity of the argument is simply staggering. As if there's no other factors influencing the approach. No domestic or international political reality to consider.

I don't generally expect much from fascist, but damn...

I'm always amazed at the destructiveness of domain blocks the way they seem to be implemented.

I mean, why do they sever existing relationships? What's the point of that?

I get rejecting posts between accounts with no existing relationship, but why do the same when the people involved have already approved of each other, at least tacitly?

The Fediverse sorely needs a better capability/permissions model!

@pmakholm
Yeah, it's a very good start. The only argument for suspension, that I can think of, is to stop federation - and people having their relationships severed seems a steep price to pay.

All the people criticizing competing decentralized protocols owe it to the -community to work hard on making the spec implementable in a straightforward and incremental way.

"Build for ActivityPub or you're harming us all" is unreasonable for anyone to say given the ambiguity of the spec and the effort required to implement it in its current form.

joelving OP ,

Even then, we're pretty far off from that being a reasonable statement. has some pretty hard to mitigate issues around privacy and identity with far-reaching ramifications for trust and safety and autonomy of people rather than server operators.

Posting this quote from developer Paul Frazee, as it is one of my favorite posts from that platform and exactly how I feel about BlueSky and Nostr too. This is not zero-sum and as I see bridges forming (now between Masto-Nostr, soon between ActivityPub and Bluesky) am excited to see the bridges start to form.

Say what you will about Dorsey and Bluesky, but I have tremendous respect for Paul. His earlier work in the DAT ecosystem and his own CTZN was some of the most interesting to follow I've encountered in a long while.
