I've been struggling with an article on & / for years.

    Sigh. Spoons.

It occurs to me that any therapy based on purely cognitive techniques... even throw on some behavioral special sauce on the side...

    Is inherently abelist.

It demands abilities that not all of us have.

How COULD COGNITIVE Behavioral Therapy NOT be inappropriate for autisitcs?

It's based on the study of neurotypical populations. (Usually white university students are the subjects looking for a few quick bucks from the "honorarium" they get paid.)

MAYBE 3% of those subjects were autistic? And ALL of THEM, to enter university had healthy IQs and functioning skills???!

    At least on paper?

Seem our neurodivergent cognitive processes are fundamentally different than at least 97% of the subjects they researched.

Kinda negating it all? For us?

Now, the "Behavioral" part of CBT? Basically rat training. If you shock me enough times. Sure. I won't go through that door. AND I will struggle mightily to only have an INTERNAL stroke... rather than an external meltdown.

That kind of aversion from a stimulus... based on fear or pain? True for every living thing at the evolutionary level above a paramecium.

    Like rats. Or kids.

    Cuz... FEAR works. PAIN works.

The cognitive part? Substitute "executive functioning," As in the thing largely missing from my autistic forebrain.

Let that sink in. The entire therapy is about monitoring individual thoughts and replacing them with correct ones.

Should sound familiar. To autistic folks.

We KNOW MASKING doesn't work. Or FEAR. Or PAIN.

We are dying from them already.

That's all the words we need.

Every Neurodivergent population has a different cognitive profile. Autistic, ADHD, AuDHD, dyslexic, dyspraxic...

We're DIFFERENT thinkers than the typical population. We're even different from each other.

And many of us overlap different diagnoses with differing cognitive styles. An autistic who experiences ADHD thinks and acts differently than an autistic who is dyslexic. At least to my trained observation. (I was a mental health social worker for 10 years.)

We require GENERATIONAL studies of representative populations before we should be recommending these techniques.

True for most coaches, therapists, etc.

    Fuck . Fuck .

A rant. Soon to be a formal-ish article. And podcast.

"Therapist's Delight: Intimate, Vacate, Placate" for a short and podcast coming soon.

    @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd @actuallyaudhd

    alt text:

"Therapist's Delight: Intimate, Vacate, Placate" depicts a stylized portrait against a backdrop of geometric shapes. The main figure's face is rendered in sharp, angular sections, like a mask split into a mosaic of emotions—one side painted in cool blues and grays, the other in warm yellows and reds, suggesting a duality of the inner and outer self. The figure's expression is neutral, yet the eyes convey a depth of introspection. This person is holding or being held by a secondary figure, which merges with the first in a puzzle-like formation, representing a fusion of therapist and patient identities. The artwork resonates with themes of seeking understanding, the dichotomy of the therapeutic process, and the interplay between revealing one’s self and retreating into the mind. The space around the figures is a complex pattern of checkerboards and colored squares, possibly symbolizing the structured environment of therapy and the ordered chaos of thought. The play of light and shadow across the figures adds to the atmosphere of contemplation and the search for balance between comfort and confrontation.

👉Autistic Senses? Neurodivergent? Why Would ANY of Us Brave Overload City?

Diving into a new thought: Why'd an autistic like me ever choose 'Overload City'? Sharing early musings and eager for your takes. 🧵

Reminder: This is just my journey. Autistic experiences are as diverse as we are.

What's your take? Ever found unexpected calm in facing the chaos head-on? Share below. 🔄

👉Autistic Senses? Neurodivergent? Why Would ANY of Us Brave Overload City?

Looking back, I spent a lifetime in angry chaos, desperate urgency... and chasing expert advice to end them both.

Why would an articulate autistic seek such a sensory and emotionally overwhelming world?

Largely, trying to distract myself from pain. At least, seems likely. Ya know, thrill-seeking?

And no expert advice, system, book, webinar, video, or relationship tone down the roar of chaos. Or tame the Pain Beast.

But diagnosis did open a door for me...

Safe introspection. I stopped looking for external approval. Not from family. Not from professionals.

I turned inward. That dark, musty closet I was scared to open in my earliest memories?

    I kicked that door in.

I stopped trying to medicate, ignore, educate... even meditate the pain away.

I turned and looked at it. Simply. Calmly. Without kicking my ass with self-loading. Cuz diagnosis said, "This ain't your fault. Not all of it anyways."

I took little bird glances at first. once in a while. But it got easier.

Then, changing my world based on what I truly saw in myself. Without the agenda of a human or group to cloud the picture.

Tiny, tentative bird hops. But they add up over
    6 or so years.

    Now... I sleep well.

No drug or guru ever gave me that. No matter what they charged. And one guy literally wanted my life in payment...

I could go on and on about improvements that came from create a space for my autism. Reducing sensory input to levels and the like. God knows I have before. Links below.

But if you're autistic, know one, love one, teach some, probably even if you work with some...

'I sleep well" tells you everything you need to know.

Turns out all I had to do is listen to Krishnamurti at 13.

'Don't play follow-the-leader. They can't tell you who you are. Look inside. Question everyone. Like a rebel with a cause."

In this series, I get pretty direct about issues in the Neurodiversity community.

It's likely, I say something you disagree with. Let's talk in the comments.

Could be we find some truth together.

I got an exciting project in my messages today for an organization I respect in the autistic community.

I try to jump on anything that supports our community. But I am Neurodivergent. Lol

I get a lot of these requests. Usually in an "emergency" basis. With a LOT less information than I would get from a client back in the day.

Umm... activists, allies... don't you KNOW in your bones that Neurodivergent folks are... well, different?

I may love and respect you. I still have my problems functioning. Ya know... ?

I kinda need to know specifics to operate well for you. I'm not complaining! I WANT to support you!

I'm just autistic. Need specificity & clarity.

Anyone asking me for help like this I NEED to know what I'm doing?

    I always ask:

    1. What is the purpose of this project?
    2. Who will see it? How will they benefit or use it?
    3. What action or result are you hoping for from your audience?
    4. What deadline?!👈👈👈
    5. Can I submit a draft in advance of deadline for your review... to ensure I'm on task?
    6. Any benefit or compensation? (I'm not expecting that with most projects... for myself. But give me an idea of how I'm going to help the world?)
    7. May I mention publicly I am working on your project? Or that I've submitted it for consideration? Or otherwise discuss it? (This can be useful to me. .. maybe you.)

It's unfortunate. As much as I want to help, I can't really work in the dark. Hard on my nervous system. 😀

But you know I'm on you guys' side and will try to do good by you. 🖖

Pro Tip: These are ALL things I need to know to keep my anxiety down. There's a good chance... that many neurodivergents you contact will need the same. Or more.

But they might not be as brash as I am... and tell you.

They'll simply turn you down. Or suffer in silence... cuz we're used to trauma... Or fail to submit the project they committed to. Cuz they couldn't do it. And we're too embarrassed to explain.

BTW, PLEASE contact me after your event. Lemme know how my stuff went? It's more than just common human courtesy...

I'm a high-anxiety ND. I can literally worry myself sick. Especially around things that trigger Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria?

    Ya know, pain?
