"Some wonder why there was such overwhelming support for us to shut down potentially TikTok or other entities of that nature. If you look at the postings on TikTok and the number of mentions of Palestinians, relative to other social media sites—it’s overwhelmingly so among TikTok broadcasts." — Mitt Romney
It's wild how he so casually says the quiet part out loud. The government is literally trying to stifle free speech and crush TikTok in order to quell pro-Palestinian content. :neofox_what: I've been saying this for a while because the urgency to ban TikTok didn't make sense otherwise, but people kept saying I need to take my tinfoil hat off. Well, here's a ranking senator talking to the secretary of state saying exactly that.
The government wants to crush the first amendment to prop up Zionism. Fascism is firmly bipartisan in America.
“Hind’s Hall”’is also a trending sound now on #Tiktok, and protest music is reaffirming for the students. The song reads like a living record and cuts through the propaganda.
Romney Admits Push to Ban TikTok Is Aimed at Censoring News Out of Gaza
A discussion between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Sen. Mitt Romney included what one critic called an "incredible mask-off moment" about the US government's long-term attempt to provide public relations work for #Israel in defense of its policies in occupied Palestinian territory—and its push to ban #TikTok to shut down Americans' access to unfiltered news about the Israeli assault on #Gaza.
"The world is screaming about Israel, why aren't they screaming about Hamas?" asked Romney. "'Accept a cease-fire, bring home the hostages.' Instead it's the other way around… typically the Israelis are good at PR. What's happened here?
"The way this has played out on social media has dominated the narrative," said Blinken. "[It] has a very very challenging effect on the narrative."
TikTok is suing the United States government in an attempt to stop the enforcement of last month’s bill, which would ban the app in the U.S unless its Chinese owner ByteDance sells up.
The lawsuit argues that the bill is an “unprecedented violation” of the First Amendment, and says that invoking national security concerns is not a sufficient reason for restricting free speech. NBC News has more, but we’re keen to hear what you think. Do you agree with the bill?
@TechDesk I‘ld like to use #TikTok by challenging them with their behavior directly … I don’t think that avoiding free speech is a good strategy to talk … especially I‘ld like to use the hashtag #reclaimtiktok, what is much bigger on the network …
"Some wonder why there was such overwhelming support for us to shut down potentially TikTok or other entities of that nature. If you look at the postings on TikTok and the number of mentions of Palestinians relative to other social media sites, it’s overwhelmingly so among TikTok broadcasts"
#Tiktok ers have spent 7 months raising $5k bounties per person for Palestinians to cross at Rafah and mid-fundraising for more families (some have evacuated up to 20 family members of single families) the #Rafah border is now closed and they are devestated. They did so much good.
@eff yeah this is pissing me off as I’m one of the larger cybersecurity creators on TikTok at 368,000 followers. It’s still how everyone finds my mastodon, twitch, and soon YouTube. It’s still also 80% of my revenue for my content creation LLC between shop and content payouts.
I’ve been on the platform since the pandemic started and any concerns we have about TikTok were already said about Meta and others
If you’ve been scrolling TikTok recently and wondered why some videos are muted, it’s probably because of the an ongoing spat between the platform and Universal Music Group, which removed the music of all the label’s artists.
Today, the two struck a “multi-dimensional licensing agreement” that will allow music from UMG’s artists to be used as TikTok audio once more. TikTok is also promising protections with respect to generative AI, including “a commitment on TikTok’s part to remove AI-generated music and improve artist and songwriter attribution,” reports @CNET.
European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen has hinted that banning TikTok in the EU is not off the table.
Speaking at a debate ahead of the bloc’s 2024 election, von der Leyen said that the Commission was “the very first institution worldwide to ban TikTok on our corporate phones,” reports Politico, adding: “We know exactly the danger of TikTok.”
After failing to stop a bill that could ban it in the U.S., TikTok now faces two big hurdles — the U.S. judicial system and the Chinese government, reports @theverge
While ByteDance has promised to fight the ruling, which requires it to divest the app within a year, it won’t be an easy fight, with experts unsure how keen judges will be to weigh in on decisions of national security importance. If it fails, it will have to consider selling TikTok. But that’s not a decision it will be able to make alone — it’ll need the Chinese government’s permission.
Time for this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video!
In this one, we have the law forcing #TikTok to sell or be banned in the US being passed, we have an article explaining why #Google Search is so much worse these days, we have the release of #Fedora 40 and #Ubuntu 24.04, and #Nvidia contributing to the NVK open source drivers:
