Sad, shameful. The Woodland Cree First Nation deserve better

streetfestival ,

First off: @#$% off, Ford. Second, this continues a trend we've seen most prominently under the clown show that is Danielle Smith's UCP in Alberta: Provincial governments wanting to dictate municipal affairs according to their own political agenda, which I don't think is healthy for Canadian cities

Timestamp: The "Disappointing new Harbourfront Plaza" is at 40:13.

It's a hockey rink-sized concrete-brick patio with some greyscale variety in stone colour to create visual appeal.

It's described by the narrator as the cheapest possible replacement for a skating rink that'd fallen into disrepair due to inadequate maintenance. He says that fairs/festivals could make good use of the space but there's a lack of greenery. He concurs with an anonymous redditor's description of it as a useless grey concrete space.

I wouldn't say I'm disappointed. Some more greenery would be nice. But I think it pretty practical. It sounds like there's a shortage of funds to invest in the space and I hope it is used for many community events

I love it! The photosheet pretty effectively captures the behaviour, in this case preening. I notice the webbed feet and think "those don't look too handy for gripping onto a branch". Do you have a photo from a greater (perceived) distance away to show how high up from the ground they are, etc.?

streetfestival ,

You rock, Kevin! Thank you.

They actually nest in trees!

That's super unexpected based on their feet. I'd guess there's an interesting adaptation story there. I love your b-side photos! I agree with you that the female is also beautiful in a more subtle way

Across brand differences perhaps. I love coconut too but unwanted coconut taste (e.g., coconut base to a mint chocolate chip ice cream) is something to be watchful for

I won't downvote but I will say that I personally don't think unfounded discriminating/stereotyping against nationalities or continents is desirable in a vegan community

streetfestival ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

there are hundreds of years of documented history confirming that the discrimination against the Fr×nch is entirely warranted in 99 cases out of 100.

Care to enlighten me a bit? One thing I like about the French is that they're usually quite willing to take to the streets for social revolution. When anti-Black racism was really prevalent in the US in the 20th century (eg, 1960s), Black people were treated much better in France than the US as far as I understand it. France a history of inhumane colonization, like many of the other big players in Europe. That's my dossier on France at the moment (I guess I'd add that modern English borrowed many cool words from the French language too)

I agree with and know that a lot of what you said is correct. For me, it's just much easier to supplement omega-3 than it is restrict omega-6 across my entire diet. That convenience is really valuable to me. I do a generous tablespoon of ground chia seeds stirred in water daily for my omega-3s, as opposed to a capsule.

Also, if you're a vegan, there are somethings you should probably take via supplements, B12 being the most notorious example; pretty much every vegan (and many omnis) should take B12 supplements. (B12 is produced by bacteria and doesn't occur in plants.) Being supplement-wise is important as a vegan. There are a lot of scams out there, but avoiding supplements altogether is ill-advised and in the case of B12 likely deleterious to one's health.

Edit: There aren't citations to this but the reasoning is pretty sound; for anyone interested in more discussion about the value of supplementation for vegans (they're pro): https://philosophicalvegan.com/wiki/index.php/Natural_vs_Supplementation

Family first, right? ;P

Making public transit an attractive option to reduce the number of vehicles on the streets definitely helps in many scenarios.

I don't work in construction, and don't have any special knowledge therein. My observation has been that usually construction projects spanning more than a day are only worked on during business hours, unless it's an emergency like power outage, but the infrastructure is always unusable (e.g., outside of business hours). I wonder, at least in select cases, wouldn't it be better to have 2 or 3 shifts, work around the clock, and complete the job sooner and minimize dead-time

Important article. I liked the breakdown the principles and the examples of violations by the UCP

Amazon Prime's NHL deal breaches cable TV's last line of defence: live sports ( www.cbc.ca )

For years, cable TV has bled viewers and subscribers to streaming giants like Netflix, Apple and Amazon. Now, those same companies are vying to stream live sports, one of the last lines of defence when it comes to audiences paying big bucks for traditional cable packages....

streetfestival ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

amazon also purchased a huge stake in NBA (men's basketball) TV rights for the next decade last week. Becoming players in the pro sports market seems like a key step in streaming services becoming the new cable (eg, you pay and there are ads)

Canadian doctors returned from Gaza almost certainly won't be killed on Canadian soil for speaking out, but there's a high likelihood they'll face professional consequences from hospitals (ie, employers) or their college (ie, professional organization). They'll probably be safer if they work at a community hospital/practice than a university-associated hospital.

I've found it troubling to see how the targeting of healthcare workers, women and children, and aid groups by the Israeli government in their 'war'/genocide has been completely ignored by the establishment - at least within the university and child health circles that I travel in - for the sake of demonstrating at least an appearance of staunch commitment to the delusion that Israel is not committing colonialist genocide. I wouldn't dare say something in real life, or challenge abstract references to the "protest" on campus. I'm in a more precarious than secure spot in terms of job and security, and it's a matter of survival right now.

I applaud the house owners around me that display "ceasefire now" signs on their lawns. And I applaud these physicians, if they're able, to supporting international justice with their testimony

streetfestival ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

You make some good points. I wonder if their testimony for ICJ or a similar body would be as protected as if it was for Canadian legal proceedings. Regarding termination, fabrication of 'patient safety' concerns can be used to disguise motivations and minimize due process when there's a desire to fire someone. Sorry if I sound wildly pessimistic. It's the most 1984 thing I've experienced personally, and I've got to put up with it for several more years before I'll be empowered to stop hiding as much

Without knowing Israel's political landscape, I'm inclined to agree, but I don't think 'a referendum on our policies' is part of the right-wing playbook

Canadian students camping for Gaza aren’t antisemitic—they’re building brave new alliances for justice ⋆ The Breach ( breachmedia.ca )

For a supposed hotbed of antisemitism, the scene at McGill’s Gaza protest encampment was distinctly Jewish: giant bottles of kosher grape juice and matzah bread piled on the ground, the fixings for a Passover dinner....

Toronto Public Library accused of anti-Palestinian racism after abrupt removal of work by Gazan poet ( ricochet.media )

streetfestival OP ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

Fair enough. I'm pro supporting families myself. I'm against wealthy people helping themselves to things intended for working class families. It sounds like the government didn't put the necessary checks and balances in place to ensure the subsidies go to those who need them

That skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US and yet a dumb almost 100-year old rule means that Americans have less effective sunscreen - a key cancer prevention tool - than many other countries is pretty wild. Do any of the industrial/governmental players involved actually care about reducing cancer risk in their population?

streetfestival ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

I agree with your answer. People who are sick or have chronic conditions are lifelong customers. There's one version of corporate regulation and paternalism for tobacco, and all other industries get a free pass to drum up business I'd say

My favourite part of the Clippers season that time Harden contested a shot by Kawhi (I think it was a 3) in the middle of a regular season game (3rd quarter - not even garbage time). I thought that was so random and funny. Will Kawhi win another championship?

A difference in ability to take part in a social justice-driven boycott is a dumb use of the term/concept privileged, but not unexpected from mainstream media

Def from Oxford: having special rights, advantages, or immunities

  • [with infinitive] having the rare opportunity to do something that brings particular pleasure: I felt I had been privileged to compete in such a race.
streetfestival ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

You're not in a good position to boycott for sure, but that doesn't mean there aren't many others who are. I think we can agree that the working class banding together is important. Let's hope something positive comes of this
