https://web.archive.org/web/20240401031953/https://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/canadian-artists-open-letter-anti-trans-policies-1.7160219

More than 400 Canadian artists from the worlds of music, film and literature are denouncing what they describe as "alarming and destructive" anti-trans legislation in an open letter released Sunday by music superstars Tegan and Sara.

The list of stars who signed the letter includes actor Elliot Page, Great Big Sea frontman Alan Doyle, actress Elisha Cuthbert, folk music legend Neil Young, recent Grammy winner Allison Russell and the two surviving members of classic children's entertainment act Sharon, Lois and Bram.

"The anti-trans policies taking root in Canada go beyond discrimination — they present a clear risk to the mental and physical well-being of trans individuals throughout the country," reads the letter.

The letter calls out Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's planned pronoun policies for gender diverse children in schools, as well as proposed restrictions for youth seeking gender-affirming care.

It also highlights similar school-based pronoun policies in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan as examples of discriminatory legislation targeting transgender youth.

They received the relay baton from the Pistons when the Pistons broke their ~25-game losing streak over the Raptors' heads in December. Raps have 13 consecutive losses now, 9 games left I think, and two potentially winnable games in the Wizards and Nets. Will they reach 20 losses? The roster turnover and injuries has been pretty nuts though. Last game, yesterday, the broadcast said this was Toronto's 25th different starting lineup this year !!

Raps lose 135 - 120, but they were within 10 or so going into the 4th quarter, which is as close as we get to a win these days (L13) lol

Didn't this trend start in 2021 or 2022? When the price of living is continuously going up, spending less is the only way to survive

It's a play that endangers another athlete on the court and it isn't even a play on the ball. I think it's unfair to other players who have to play against him. I'm also interested to see how the league responds. He had an indefinite suspension that worked out to 16 games for a history of actions like this and came back in January of this season. The league doesn't want to suspend him because they're concerned they might make less money if they do so, but they also need to maintain some image as a legitimate authority in this matter. Gotta keep GSW in the play-in too ;)

Thanks yall, but I'm comfortably numb to the losing streak at this point

[Woj] Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter is out of the lineup and a subject of an NBA investigation into irregularities on prop betting involving him... ( x.com )

Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter is out of the lineup and a subject of an NBA investigation into irregularities on prop betting involving him, sources tell @DavidPurdum, @ESPNWindhorst and me. Story soon....

streetfestival ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

Is the NBA legally obligated to police the order around of prop betting on their league? Why is this an NBA investigation versus legal charges filed by a gambling company? I'd guess it is because the NBA's 'partnerships' with gambling companies do obligate them to police betting on their sport, and that's interesting to think about, that responsibility and accountability to gambling companies. If this were a legal thing, I think Jontay would get more of the "innocent until proven guilty" sentiment. But the gambling companies have the NBA doing their biding, may wish to make an example out of Jontay as a deterrent to others more than anything here, and they get to appear uninvolved as this is an 'NBA investigation.'

I don't know how much info was available when this report came out, but I'm familiar with bell media's (ie ctv) bias. "Police-involved shooting" is a BS way to phrase a civilian being shot by the police

Disagreaements

Why does it seem that people actively avoid expressing disaagreements on what somone says when they are out somewhere having a conversation? Why arwe people more concerned about trying to sound nice rather than being honest? It's not provactive or antagonizing to simply say "I can't agree with you on that, I disagree." I suspect...

streetfestival ,
@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

When I'm with people who are new to me I usually try to interact over things we have in common versus focus on things we don't have in common, because I tend to enjoy the experience more. IRL, the more I know someone the more likely I am to say "I disagree with you there." For people who are new to me, they have to say something that I think poses harm to themselves or others (e.g., hate speech) for me to say "you're wrong and here's why". Otherwise, I prefer to steer conversation to something I think we'll both enjoy. In my experience picking disagreements hasn't been fruitful avenue of socialization. I'm not sure most people are reasonable or even like others believing they should be. It's a good question though. I used to think I should strive for 100% honesty and candor, but now I think honesty and to a lesser degree candor are good things to aspire to, but other factors like respect can easily trump them in some situations

Big bag of Ruffles potato chips: used to be 220g, now 200g (price unchanged) ( lemmy.ca )

So I've been buying 220g bags of Ruffles potato chips for $4.79 at No Frills (a value-based franchise banner under Loblaws that operates in Ontario). This is one of many products that seems to be towing the line of not going over the $5 threshold....

The only complaint I heard about the Ignite team was that from a player development standpoint it was crap compared to college programs. I can't recall it in detail but something about both coaches and on the floor everyone was trying to do their own thing, there was no team development, and it didn't serve those players well in the NBA as the college guys were noticeably further along than them. Of course, that could in theory be fixed, as it did many good things as you mentioned

Hey babe, you wanna play Beyblade?
Beyblade was kind of unique amongst anime shows of this era that were popular around the world (eg, Pokemon, Digimon) in that the toys were advertised to resemble the same action that occurred in the show - battling spinning tops essentially, whereas in contrast functional pokeballs didn't exist

I was jogging outside half a dozen times each in February and March. Before this year I'd never jogged in either month outside in Canada. There are tons of flower blossoms already. I'm already curious what next winter will look like to help make sense of if this winter was exceptionally warm and/or if climate change is accelerating

FWIW given the downvotes, I think your points are valid, although I think things are more complex and need a more nuanced response. (For example, I see this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I don't want to blind myself as a result of enjoying--weather willing.)

It alarms me when I see people react angrily or defensively by mere exposure to the idea that we as a society need to consume less if we want to 'flatten the curve,' so to speak, of climate change. These are really important conversations that we need to be having. And there is a lot of corporate and ultra-wealth interest in us not having these conversations and not taking action (sooner versus later). I think they may have a hand in disseminating the idea that any such cut-backs we make will greatly reduce our quality of living and "how dare they!" kind of thing that is really black-and-white and denial-based. But it can play into the human psyche and fend off critical thinking and a willingness to examine one's own role in things pretty effectively

I'm not an expert, but I've often wondered why cats like treats so much, and I did a little searching. I think the main reason is an ingredient called animal digest, which would be represented in the ingredients list under natural flavours.

I believe animal digest is to meat what simple sugar is to complex carbohydrates. Humans really like sweet things, probably because evolutionarily it helped us eat fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamins and nutrients. Present day, food manufacturers can exploit this through things like corn syrup. Cats can't taste sweet, as far as I know. But like humans like sweet things, cats are really into the umami flavour. It sounds like animal digest is very high in umami flavour and scent, which for evolutionary reasons (finding energy dense foods) is really attractive to them.

@streetfestival@lemmy.ca avatar

Only about 2/3rds of cats are affected by catnip, whereas I think all cats like treats. Catnip affects cats by entering their nasal tissue. Cats are hyper when first affected by catnip, and then they're low-energy - none of this behavioural pattern occurs with treats. Cats also respond much more enthusiastically to treats than they do catnip. Also, cats do get tired of catnip but the same doesn't apply to treats. I'm not sure catnip could be included under "natural flavour" on a pet food product

Yeesh. I knew the Raptors were going to get dominated going against the Pels without Scottie and Yak, but that 41-point blowout was tougher to watch than I had expected. Raps are on pace for a 30.4 win season. Will they get 30 wins?

I’m increasingly confused by how many people seem to not understand that.

Me too, and I'm Canadian and don't know much about US politics. Are there sources out there (e.g., US news, social media campaigns, messaging from actual Democrats) spreading the idea that an uncommitted vote in the primary means voting for trump in the election?

If you only can call out horror when it’s history, what is journalism good for?

Because if you obscure the fact that this is a colonial dynamic, then it’s much easier to just present what has happened, both in the longer term and since October 7, as “Israel is just a country defending itself.”

they’re all obscuring that at the time of the post–World War I British mandate in Palestine, the population of Palestine was 90% Palestinians. And even when the UN issued its 1947 partition plan, Palestinians owned more than 94% of the land between the river and the sea.

So you can’t understand the basic hinge point in this war, like the fact that most people in Gaza, 70% of them or thereabouts, are refugees, without understanding that they got to be refugees because creating a colonial state in Palestine required expelling 750,000 Palestinians and also their descendants.

But that is sort of built into the commercial orientation of the media system, that there are many considerations that have nothing to do with serving the public good by helping provide the populace with the information that we need and a range of possible lenses to think about them. What we see instead is an orientation toward minimizing atrocities carried out by countries like the United States and Canada and their allies, which, in the case of Israel, is less an ally than an appendage.

Kibbutz Be’eri Rejects Story in New York Times October 7 Exposé: “They Were Not Sexually Abused” ( theintercept.com )
