First of all: haha, funny, your nickname is in the OP

Secondly: how are your links you referred us to showing that the joke made is eurocentric and racist? What's real GDP growth (that's what the map you linked showed) got to do with anything? Why is the corruption perception index any indication of how hard life is gonna be if you are born in a certain place? It doesn't show how much corruption there is or the effects of said corruption, just how corrupt things are perceived as.

And regarding the happiness index.... Have you looked at the page? It lists almost exclusively countries within Europe, so that would support the joke, would it not?

Wait; he was pissed that F5 wanted to treat something as a security issue where he “and the developers” (citation needed) wanted to treat it as a normal bug. So, the “evil corporate overlords” wanted to fix something via hotfix-release, while he wanted the fix to be shipped later with a regular release?

So the company wanted — just so I get this straight — to fix a thing sooner, and therefore they are evil. They wanted to provide something that benefited users sooner and… how exactly does that make them worthy of scorn? guys, help me out, what am I missing here?

The frickin' bees as a species aren't dying out. Wild bees are because they get pushed aside by cultivated ones, for fuck's sake. Stop trying to solve problems that aren't there and start solving the real ones.

Norgur ,
Norgur avatar

What? Like... what?
I'm not in the slightest talking about that. Not ever. I'm talking about population numbers. While several wild bees are in danger of extinction, the honey bee is everything but. Yet still people get honey bees to "save the bees" which is not what this is about. The honey bees are taking the wild bees' place in many ecological systems, pushing the wild ones out.

Here is one source, my sources are mostly in German, but this one sums it up in English:

Three women contract HIV from dirty “vampire facials” at unlicensed spa ( arstechnica.com )

Trendy, unproven "vampire facials" performed at an unlicensed spa in New Mexico left at least three women with HIV infections. This marks the first time that cosmetic procedures have been associated with an HIV outbreak, according to a detailed report of the outbreak investigation published today....

Norgur ,
Norgur avatar

What even is a fucking Vampire facial? (I mean,.I can imagine a few things, but the places you can get those aren't usually called a 'spa')

You know that the post is written like that solely for the "hahaha facial can mean something different and it's smutty" joke, right? You... you know that, right?

Well, I think this points more towards the rise of LLM driven spell checkers like Grammarly than to the rise of fraud with LLMs, apart from the blatantly obvious examples that are more telling about the culture in countries like China. If they are so lazy that they just spam out u edited ChatGPT output, how many of their "findings" were just made up over the years before that? This is like stealing. Most people don't start stealing jewelry, they start by shoplifting and become more brazen and blatant by getting away with it. So: what did those."scientists" start out and get away with? How many studies are just lies over fabrications made up by propaganda bureaus and we didn't even notice? How many patients got treatments stemming from those fabrications? How many studies went nowhere because they based on something that was just made up? How many things go wrong because someone wanted to make China look cool and just made up "science"?"

Norgur ,
Norgur avatar

And how science bullshit websites gobble their bullshit up. Look at the technology communities here on Lemmy. There is not one week without some spurious claim by Chinese scientists who apparently revolutionize batteries two times a month at least, each revolution more hilariously beyond everything physically possible than the previous one.

Yet, most ppl talk about how awesome this tech will be when it's finally in use, blabber about the genius behind the discovery and go into borderline conspiracy mode, suspecting "big oil" or whomever to stop this one like they supposedly stopped all the others. Physics is what "stopped the others", you gullible tech-freak! Reality stopped the one before that! Big oil or pharma or whoever are by no means without guilt when it comes.to stoping innovation, but those things are just made up. It's usually not even very thought through. It's just obvious bullshit.

The EU should stop ‘westsplaining’ and listen to its smaller eastern members – they saw the Ukraine war coming, researcher says ( theconversation.com )

There is a "stark difference of opinion between countries like Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and the Czech Republic as compared to western European countries such as France or Germany", writes Viktoriia Lapa from the Institute for European Policymaking at the Bocconi University in Italy, arguing that “westsplaining”...

Norgur ,
Norgur avatar

Yeah, that guy is greatly misrepresenting what happened inside the governments. Germany and others didn't hold back because they didn't believe what was happening or something, they had a different stance on how weapon deliveries would affect Europe's ability to defend itself and how this could drag Europe into the hot side of the conflict. We're they too cautious and slow at times? Absolutely. But that's not because they were "westsplaining", but because they had different approaches to this mess. This only becomes "westsplaining" and "belittling" of other nations if you dismiss any approach besides "deliver all the weapons immediately" as a mistake and weapon deliveries as the only solution. Which is almost never true in any issue of this magnitude.

Norgur ,
Norgur avatar

So? How does what you said make "send all weapons immediately" the only solution and the obvious and only thing to do?

Norgur ,
Norgur avatar

It maybe that I read the whole thing wrong, because I'd agree if we are talking about the lead up to the 2022 conflict since 2014, but I got the impression that the person talked about the reaction to the attack specifically.

The GOP’s “Election Integrity” Lawyer Was Just Indicted for Election Subversion ( www.motherjones.com )

The attorney, Christina Bobb running the Republican National Committee’s “election integrity” effort has been criminally charged by the state of Arizona for her efforts to help Donald Trump steal the 2020 election. This turn of events highlights the Orwellian meaning of the phrase “election integrity,” as used by Trump...

Or the desolate, dead places pollution and industry nave created.

Besides, "not having vegetation", so being literally devoid of life is a theme encountered in many of the folk sagas, Tolkien wanted to imitate.

Norgur ,
Norgur avatar

Well, that's all the subject of almost endless debate among literature scholars. Firstly: It's crucial to never draw conclusions about the stance of an author from his writing alone. Secondly, the premise behind the Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion was to invent a body of folklore in an imaginary geographic body that was just like the UK. Something that the British literature canon sorely lacks, especially when compared to the rather cohesive stories around the Nordic Gods (even if the Edda is mere fabrication by Catholics and probably takes more liberties than they should make the Norns look bad and Christ look spectacular), or the Greek/Latin Gods.

Tolkien was a very learned linguist and literature professor. So there is no way to tell if he chose things like the skin colors or the descriptions out of a moral message he wanted to convey, or if he merely copied things he assumed would be in such works.

He very famously strongly opposed Nazi-Ideology and Eugenics, as well as British propaganda as soon as that turned racist as well (Picturing the Germans as the same kind of sub-human the Germans thought everybody else was). So it's highly debatable if he really had anything racist in his mind or if we interpret stuff with our current mindset into works of the past, which we can and should not do.

The same goes for descriptions of Nature and such. Was he really anti-industrialist, or did he describe a land he imagined the people in this imaginary Britain-esque place would find? Furthermore, if he was anti-industrialist (or pro-nature): How much of that did make it into the Lord of the Rings? We simply cannot tell, so we shouldn't try to. He expressed some notions in that direction in private letters, but we cannot guess from the Lord of the Rings.

Where's the shirt from that you are wearing? Who built the device you are using to post here?

Where did the aluminum that's used in your bike come from? Who dug it up?

Why aren't you speaking for those people as well? Are you fine with having those clothes and the neat devices? If so,what makes those workers less worthy of "speaking up" than say dairy cows?

Thing is: there is so much abuse and exploitation going around on this world, one person cannot go against all of it, sadly. Everyone will have a different focus which sort of abuse they go against. Be it child abuse, worker exploitation, what have you.

You can blame people for not trying to better the world at all, but reserving the right to determine which wrong deserves the most attention and judging people for not following you is arrogant.

Norgur ,
Norgur avatar

No, im not saying you shouldn't care about animals or that the matter of suffering animals is a trivial one because other things. That would be whataboutism. I'm saying that no one can care about all the suffering in the world at once. So you can't blame people if they care about a suffering that's not top priority to you and vice versa.

I used the other things I listed as examples to demonstrate that a vegan might not care as much about other things that are bad as well. Which is fine. As I said: the only people we should really annoy are those who are doing nothing at all to better the pain and suffering in this world.

While this is hardly a surprise after the streaming market became a clusterfuck of proportions hardly imaginable, that will lead to more enshitification. Over the course of the coming years, those services will incerasingly try to "re-gain" subscribers in this weird roulette of subscriptions, so they will all count on exclusives, fracturing the market even more.

The only people untouched by this will be the pirates, as always. You hit "go" in your sonarr-application and some time later, the thing you wanted to watch just appears in your library.

Supreme Court weighs Donald Trump case, abortion bans, homeless camps in blockbuster week ( www.usatoday.com )

Most notably, the high court will weigh if and when a former president can claim criminal immunity for acts committed while in office as Trump, who is currently on trial for allegedly concealing hush money payments to an adult film actress, fights three additional indictments over his attempts to overturn the 2020 election and...

From the outside, the US increasingly looks like an autocracy lead by those "judges" in the supreme court that apparently can not be touched in any way and somehow get to decide just about everything.

Norgur ,
Norgur avatar

Yep, if that happens, the judiciary breaks down. If I do not need to respect the judgement of the supreme Court, why do I need.to respect the judgement of any court?

If this takes root among law enforcement (this seems to have already started big time) and among the general public, public order becomes impossible to maintain.
