Ok another viral Raya song - am being such a typical Malaysian in always being puzzled if we're a regional/international source of anything - so kinda like how our CNY songs always get attention from other sinophones during Lunar New Year, over the years our Raya songs are popular elsewhere too. Though I think this used to be mainly in the nusantara but i'm seeing it's bursting out into the wider Muslim world.
yyyanyway, after watching the how manyth Indonesian reel, here's the other Raya song from this year: https://youtu.be/UnBr1vwjacU
Finally a contemporary Raya song that has immediate iconic status. But when it went viral I didn't think "random Japanese content creator dancing to it" viral lol.
Southeast Asian Muslims also retain the practice of cemetery caretaking without necessarily framing it as ancestor worship. As such, there are some customs we do for the dead that isn't always analogous elsewhere like doing the 40-day tahlil (sort of a wake 40 days after death) but since it's in keeping with the Islamic practice of respecting your elders and maintaining familial relations, there's historical and cultural continuity.
As such, while it doesn't have the force of religious law, Muslims here tend to visit family graves on Eid (usual al-Fitr but also al-Adha) to clean, and pray over the dead. But we don't have family plots so one fact about city Muslims these days is since the system is first-come-first-served, you likely have to visit multiple cemeteries to get to all of your family.
Indonesia’ s week-long Eid al-Fitr holiday officially begins. In the Middle East and other parts of the world, marking the end of Ramadan is the minor Eid but in Southeast Asia this is the major Eid, the other being the sacrificial Eid al-Adha.
Malaysia and Singapore only allocate 1-2 days of holiday but Indonesia’s customary homecoming practice means anything less than 5 days won’t ever be sufficient. It’s like our Thanksgiving but for 7-9 days depending on when it falls during the week.
Any effort to contact businesses during this time will be futile unless you’ve already had prior appointment and even then it might be canceled 😂😂😂.
Jakarta’s residents have slowly left the city for the holidays starting last Friday and the holiday exodus typically accelerates until the day before Eid until around half the city is left, leaving it pleasant for everyone else to drive, take buses, go to parks, malls, and other local destinations. Outbound traffic is downright terrible already.
This time next week the inbound traffic to major cities and population centres will be pretty severe as residents return. Often this also means a spike in city population with new people coming looking for work.
The European Parliament and Member States just reached an agreement on introducing the Digital Identity, #eID.
Directly afterwards, #EU Commissioner Breton said: “Now that we have a Digital Identity Wallet, we have to put something in it…”, suggesting a connection between #CBDC and eID.
They ignored all the privacy experts and security specialists. They’re pushing it all through.
Wishing all Muslims who observe, a peaceful, joyous, blessed ✨Eid al-Adha✨as well as a portion of the great vision, trust & sacrifice that occasioned this Feast 🤲🏼
Chilling with friends, i was updating them on my Raya (#Eid), which included visiting my dad's grave to read over some prayers and clean up his plot.
A friend interrupted, "I thought #Muslims aren't really into that sort of thing...? (ancestor stuff)"
"Ah well, Southeast Asian Muslims, Raya is sort of our quasi-Cheng Beng as well."
Another friend: "It's pretty scandalous to other Muslims, even here."
Me: "I had an American Muslim intern once. Even our cemeteries shocked her."
(Because if you're being very fundie/wahhabist about it, as our graves are meant to be reused down the line and also you're meant to eventually be anonymous until the hereafter, you're not supposed to erect permanent structures like stone enclosures)
Anyway, we went just before Raya (no real taboos, it's strictly cultural after all). It was still under renovation and the contractors were blaring dance music before realizing that we're reading the Qur'an, lol. (1/2)
In extremely raya problems, my house is now too full of food, not just from the open house menu but also the various gifts and hampers people kept coming over with, as well as the neighbour food exchange.
Malaysians will celebrate #HariRaya—elsewhere known as #Eid—tomorrow.
Here’s a photo from last year, taken while I was strolling around downtown #KualaLumpur during #Ramadan, as Muslim families and friends broke their fast at Dataran Merdeka. I remember marvelling at how, though so many had gathered there, the atmosphere was one of hushed, almost reverent silence. People were too busy eating 😆
Adding on to my previous post, as it will be Syawal i.e. #Raya (#Eid) season very soon (tomorrow!), the seasonal pop-up lemang stalls have arrived. The road shoulder is always a popular choice for a lorry or a van to just set up shop, and what's on stock depends on the season: durians and coconuts are commonly found this way, along with other seasonal harvests. Isn't that technically illegal? 😁
Are you also a small family of lazy cooks celebrating Raya (#Eid) in an economy optimized for small enterprises like homecooked food? Not a problem! Just go to the special scheduled farmer's market before the break of dawn and stock up on the mainstays.
Oh no succumbed to the Malay-Muslim tradition of buying new bolts of cloth (which will be sent to the tailor for the traditional/festival dress) for #Raya (#Eid) instead of the newer Malay-Muslim tradition of waiting at the last absolute second and buying last year's Raya stock on #Zalora. #Malaysia#Fedijaya#MYToots#UsingUpMyPerDiem
