As you all know, today is , which celebrates a new set of works that are now available through the .

Here are two landing pages for the occasion, which is a banger in all senses: https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2024/
https://publicdomainreview.org/blog/2024/01/public-domain-day-2024/

There are so many good films, musicals, books and sound recordings that are now free from their shackles.

But the most notable, in other words the Crown Jewel of this new set has to be Mickey Mouse 1.0 (aka Steamboat Willie) which was a nearly 90 year wait.

Here's a very good post on what you can and can't do with Mickey 1.0 as a whole. https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/mickey/

Also, to wrap it all off, here's Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) with some thoughts on Public Domain Day in all. https://pluralistic.net/2023/12/20/em-oh-you-ess-ee/#sexytimes

I like this section of the piece which screenshot is attached below as while today is a cause for celebration, don't forget that there's still corporations and the copyright cartel that are attempting to kill these efforts.

What do the Kingpin, Batgirl, the Herculoids, and King Louie of "The Jungle Book" have in common? They all should've entered public domain today under their original copyright terms... but didn't, thanks to retroactive extensions.

(Also, my obligatory "Mickey Mouse enters public domain today" comments.)

on , your annual reminder that NO new works will be entering the public domain in canada till 2043 (!), thanks to the canadian government caving to US pressure in the USMCA deal. canada was life-plus-50, but last year it changed to life-plus-70.

    Also Vorsicht!

NKCR is public-domain-adjacent so feel free to hop over there for shareable and reusable and other fun, weird and beautiful images on or any day.

The Internet Archive celebrates next month with “Weird Tales From the Public Domain” in-person and virtual events.

Much of Weird Tales (including the classic 1928 story “The Call of Cthulhu”) is public domain now due to copyright nonrenewal. But other creepy 1928 works like The Terror, the first talking horror film, join the public domain in 26 days. Parts persist, but I’m horrified that, as with many other films its age, no known full copies survive.
