"Les murmures de la montagne de métal (Partie 1)", or "Echoes of the Metal Mountain (Part 1)", is now available in both original French and English translation. A #scifi story where history encounter legends.
Today is World Book Day. If you've always wanted to write a novel but never known where to start (or you've started and stopped more times than you can count), be inspired by Justin Taylor's story for LitHub, an apology for why it took him a decade to finish his new book, "Reboot." "I started it on New Year’s Day 2014 and the first thing I did was write longhand for a week. The second thing I did was fail for seven years," he writes.
It's always been hard to make a living as a writer, but in 2024, it's harder than ever. Dirt has published this depressing but essential essay by David Hill, a union organizer turned author, on the grim reality of writing life. "At the time the National Writers Union was founded [in 1981], $1 a word was considered a bare-minimum rate for freelance writing ... Today it is no longer considered the floor, but a ceiling."
Stymied by writer's block? We know the feeling! Here are some tips from author Steve Almond on how to overcome it or even accept it as a potential ally to our creativity. "The first thing that needs to be said is that writers get blocked almost constantly. During the composition of this very paragraph, I stopped typing thirty-seven times (I counted), stumped as to what I wanted to say next, and how," writes Almond. "I got up and made a snack. I went outside to chase away the woodchuck living beneath our storage shed. I came back inside and turned off the app that turns off my internet and spent a solid half hour researching how to poison a woodchuck."
This is an excerpt from Almond's book, "Truth Is the Arrow, Mercy Is the Bow: A DIY Manual for the Construction of Stories," featured in LitHub.

It is my pleasure to announce the upcoming release of my new #scifi#novel : "Echoes of the Metal Mountain". It will be available on April 30th both in French and English.
One of the things we did "back in the day" (say early 2000's) was have author groups where maybe 5-10 authors were in a group, we had a website, a newsletter, I guess now there'd be social media presence, and we each agreed to promote the group in each others' newsletters .... I suppose that's out of fashion, but just thinking I'd love to get more 👀 on my books.
#PennedPossibilities 254 — How do you use social media as an author? If you have a blog and / or a home for your writing, link whatever you have for others to see.
How do I use it? Barely … Most social media platforms have some form of "no self-promo", so you always have to be cautious.
I have a website (https://deberelene.com/) that links to a bunch of places where you can read my stuff (yes, entire novels) for free, or I can just put them here …
Ream is probably going to become my Community hub when they get their Community tools set up. And my books are there for free: https://reamstories.com/deberelene
And I'm on Yoru, which I look forward to seeing grow. I like that they have flexible options for writers and readers. Readers can budget how much "Stardust" (Yoru's 'cash') they can afford and from there support authors monthly, or per chapter, or whatever. Authors can only accept paying readers, or can offer "Pay what you want", which I am a fan of (https://app.yoru.world/en/profile/soulhaven).
I'm also on Inkitt which seems to have some quite good Community tools, and flexible ways for readers to pay: https://www.inkitt.com/Soulhaven
… now to find out where my readers want to hang out …
As the bird eats
The succulent fruit,
and flowers are kissed
by the host of bees,
I see creatures in my garden
from a world unseen.

I'd prefer quotes from your own work, but it can be from any author or book you'd like to share...
