Today is World Book Day. If you've always wanted to write a novel but never known where to start (or you've started and stopped more times than you can count), be inspired by Justin Taylor's story for LitHub, an apology for why it took him a decade to finish his new book, "Reboot." "I started it on New Year’s Day 2014 and the first thing I did was write longhand for a week. The second thing I did was fail for seven years," he writes.
Are you one of those celebrating it? We cannot think about a better gift today than “Ada & Zangemann – A Tale of Software, Skateboards, and Raspberry Ice Cream”, an enjoyable story for readers of any age! 😍
Since it's #WorldBookDay, I'd like to draw your attention to serialized books on the web. IMHO this is what eBooks should be in 2024, using websites and/or newsletters to serialize a book. And I'd be remiss if I didn't promote my own such effort: “Bubble Blog: From Outsider to Insider in Silicon Valley’s Web 2.0 Revolution” is my memoir/history book that chronicles the rise of the modern internet during the first decade of this century. You can read it here: https://cybercultural.com/
@YLee Yes and yes - and that all sounds super noble and admirable. In reality, it becomes an expensive competitive fancy dress comp where staff and students dress as entirely non-book related characters (films/superheroes etc.) and it does nothing to encourage a genuine love of reading. You want your child to read? Buy them a book! #WBD#WorldBookDay#Books#Education#edutooters@bookstodon@edutooters

I wasn't aware of the cosplay aspect to it. Reading is probably a little too quiet and internal for modern society. There has to be some lavish, external (read: Instagram-worthy) display to get people interested.
As the admin of bookstodon.com, I feel I would be remiss in not saying something for #WorldBookDay
So everyone read a little today (or a lot if you have time) and tell someone about your book. You may get another person to pick it up as well. And more people reading is just what the world needs.
“I never read such an impious book,” said the reader, throwing it on the floor.
“You need not hurt me,” said the book; “you will only get less for me second hand, and I did not write myself.”
For #WorldBookDay (UK), a fable about a book: Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Reader”
In really fantastic news, the organisers behind World Book Day UK are letting everyone listen for free to the wonderful audiobook of The Raven Heir (narrated beautifully by Eleanor Jackson) as part of their World of Stories website! From today through 26 March, you can stream the audiobook here: https://www.worldbookday.com/stories/the-raven-heir-bloomsbury-fluent-reader/
