I can't figure out if mastodon is a high context culture or not. People seem to be expected to give long introductions and do a lot of identity/positionality disclosure, but also an enormous reply guy culture which is defined by low context drive-by. Conversational turn-taking is extremely low compared to other platforms ime, but depth-seeking is high. What an interesting mix.

*obviously, these experiences are all situated within my own network effects, and I'm not well networked here.

I find that when you mute people who seek attention through language-policing and nitpicking, you end up with a pretty chill feed of people who mostly understand that we're all going through different shit.

It is pretty cool to see all the different forks of major fediverse platforms. Just learning about Chuckya, a "soft fork" of glitch-soc, which itself is a fork of Mastodon.

Really shows the diversity of the fediverse!

@Taleya Thanks for your sage advice. Should it ever happen that one day i decide to create a Lemmy account & begin using it, i hope that i remember this tip.

In the meantime, from my & accounts, my OP & this reply now both coming from the former, @'s & #'s do work that way. The is far wider than only Lemmy.

Am I correct, assuming that @tootapp is dead app? On AppStore no updates for a year and I seems not to find any activity around it anymore.

Which client would be the most versatile to work with and maybe some other services with iOS app and alive?

Currently, it's not possible through the API to schedule threads.

I don't fully understand the point of Pixelfed. I've used it a couple times, but always end up abandoning it. I like the pictures, but I can just view them here on Mastodon. I was even following most of the same accounts since it's all federated anyway.

There are clients for Mastodon with gallery views and you can set feeds to media only. Pixelfed felt entirely redundant to me, and I couldn't find a use case.

People still can’t wrap their minds around the fact that the social networks in the Fediverse do not need excessive investor money to thrive.

How long does a post take to federate to other servers?

TLDR: 8.6 seconds on average

At least as of about 7:30 EST today with a few servers under 1 and a few over 30 seconds.

What are some good (simple!) options for automagically posting RSS stuff on the Fediverse?

This works with Mastodon well enough, but I'd love a list of alternatives.

If you make tools for Mastodon, consider increasing compatibility with the rest of the fediverse.

This guide might help.

Now that the grows and grows, I'm more and more convinced, that the best way to access it, doesn't yet exist. There is no way of really experiencing the diversity right now.

But what would such an need?

  • different tabs for different media types (microblog, longform etc.)
  • show content more like how it looks, where it's from (, etc.)
  • when posting content support all the features of the platform, you're posting on

What else?

As a fun little experiment, @damon and I worked together to get a instance up and running that stores media on ! It was an interesting learning experience.

I don't think we're ready to announce anything yet, as this was in service of another project in development. But, there's an increasing number of ways to host content on an IPFS node service, and tie it back to platforms like Mastodon using an S3-compatible API for Object Storage and some proxying.

This is all pretty rudimentary, but the big-brain realization is that a more robust version could be done by pairing Minio to s3x if we wanted to self-host an IPFS node with those specific features.

Hmm, on your end.

First toot was a single 'loose' top-level toot, second one above to the thread, but no emoji showing in at all in both of these. And opening the link to your toot, leads to a login page on NodeBB.

How did it look on your end?

I'm glad that my Mastodon instance supports usage of device-native emoji sets so that UnifontEX emoji are usable

silsinn9821 ,

@stgiga Except your instance does not run 🐘, it runs 🦈 (a fork of :misskey_mi:, which itself was developed independently from Mastodon so is not a fork of the latter). If you want a more general, software-agnostic term, then call it a instance.

silsinn9821 ,

@stgiga Even is not the original software. That title belongs to an extinct software that’s even older than & (which both are older than Mastodon). For more details on Fedi history, check this timeline compiled by @youronlyone/@youronlyone who corrected some of my own misconceptions & wrong thoughts about Fedi stuff.

silsinn9821 ,

@stgiga @youronlyone @youronlyone & talking about history by the way, since the doc itself says it is a living doc, there are a few notable instances not yet mentioned there that were recently developed by high-profile (or at least notable enough for us) Fedi users & might have verifiable links or posts that can give them a place within the doc’s timeline:
( fork) by @noellabo
(a very popular fork) by @Amelia (& others from the @Sharkey project) since 2023
• maybe ( fork?), unsure if it’s notable enough for inclusion or if supported by verifiable links (even I don’t know who created it).
I leave it up to @youronlyone whether certain popular extensions (if not forks per se) like (extending Mastodon) & (extending or modifying ) can be added to the timeline as well.
Also, I will definitely not suggest for inclusion (or even a footnote mention) a certain fork that was given an obscene name by a fringe group of people (let’s just pretend it never existed, OK?) :ablobcatknitsweats:

in questo modo tutti gli iscritti al gruppo fediverso riceveranno una notifica del messaggio e potranno rispondere e rilanciare il messaggio!

I just found this out. If you want to know if someone on Threads can be followed on Mastodon, you can type the following into the terminal:

curl "https://threads.net/.well-known/webfinger?resource=acct:potus@threads.net"

For the POTUS account on threads.

If you get back a JSON object that doesn't have an error in it, you have someone you can follow.

This means it's fairly easy to write a local script to see who has turned on federation over on Threads.
