I've finished: The Memory Theater by Karin Tidbeck

Something's rotten in paradise.

Tidbeck weaves a complicated web stretching across multiple worlds, histories, folk tales and broken utopian dreams that ultimately deals with evil and the power of stories to fight it.

It's interesting to read a sci-fi author from a different culture that also has her own way of interpreting the multiverse and the power of story and imagination.

I hope more of her work will be translated.

Does anyone else think it is weird how common it is for yarn in the US to be described in Yards and Grams? I notice a lot of labels have yds and gms where i would have expected either all imperial or all metric - yds per oz or meters per g. How about you? @knitting

How do you usually think about the length and weight of your yarn?

Archergal ,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@consumablejoy @knitting I can visualize yards/ounces pretty easily, yards/grams takes a bit longer. Meters… I could do it if I HAD to, but…

Ben H. Winter's new book BIG TIME, and it's really good so far. It is lean, so perfect for those who hate padding in their stories. I don't want to give away the premise, so I will just say that it's a bit of a thriller that involves time itself.

Short Stories.

Love ‘em, hate ‘em, somewhere in the middle?

Years ago one of my dear friends (who is a huge bookworm) and I were talking. She told me she hated short stories. I can’t remember why or if she even told me a reason. This conversation has stuck with me, because I struggle with them- why? I have no idea. I have tried different tactics to overcome this. I am s l o w l y reading one now, but I don’t gravitate toward it (not the one pictured, but it’s one I really want to read if I can ever get there).

I’d love to hear your thoughts.
@bookstodon

Archergal ,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@Likewise @bookstodon I’ve always been a big fan of short stories. I used to get anthologies from the library when I was young. I do read fewer these days, I guess, partly because the book clubs I’m in read novels almost exclusively.
A GOOD short story is a wonder. So much done in a (relatively) small space! And, as someone else mentioned, if the story isn’t that wonderful, at least it hasn’t taken much time to get through it.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I have one: an early paperback of Startide Rising by David Brin. He came to the ole Science Fiction & Mystery Bookstore in Atlanta a few decades ago. I was a really big fan at the time, and showed up. (I usually don’t WANT to meet my heroes, for fear of being disappointed.
He signed it “To Janice, a lady with lovely eyes, David Brin”
He said at the time he wanted to personalize his autographs while he could.

- what was your greatest mistake, your best fix?

I think I've already talked about that here sind time ago.

I once knit 2-in-1 socks - that's knitting them in a sort of double knitting, one inside of the other. It went well for quite some time, but at one point I got to confident and didn't check as much, as I should have - and connected the two tubes.

What to do?

Dropping the stitch and knitting it back up of course.

Book 1: System Collapse. I'd been eagerly awaiting this book. I enjoyed it but it wasn't quite the Murderbot book I was expecting. May have been a me problem, it was a long time since I'd read the last one and I had to re-learn who the characters were and this novel seemed short on "get to know the characters" stuff. A lot of Murderbot's inner mind, some of their relationship with ART, the usual clusterfuck on a remote planet. Last year's reading list https://glammr.us/@jessamyn/111666401754992583

Going to be perfect. After my son's surgery when I can take the risk of going out again I'm gonna go to a bead shop and find the perfect beads for it.

I had the thought that I could knit a lap blanket on the machine with alternating sets of knits and purls to make a checkerboard pattern. I cast on and arranged the stitches in groups of 20. Knit the first set of rows, so far so good.

Here’s where things went wrong: I transferred all the main bed stitches down to the ribber, and all the ribber bed stitches up to the main bed. Took out Colour 1 and threaded up Colour 2. Confidently ran the carriage across the beds and my knitting (with five pounds of weights hanging from the ribber comb, of course) thunked to the floor.

Ffffff.

I think I probably didn't get the yarn into the carriage properly. Will try again... later. Or tomorrow.

Oh oh oh, I think I'm onto something with this pattern.

(I am not a pattern designer, I struggle to see how things come together, but let's try anyways)

This pattern increases by 3 on each side during the body section.
The body section is divided into two charts. You are meant to knit A, B, A. And you can increase the size by adding another B, A repeat, as long as you finish on A.

(1/x)

Fiber artists of the Fedi! I'm looking for some yarn.

Lace weight
White/undyed
Silk + merino (maybe another fiber, silk is a for sure tho)

NOT looking for budget options. I am looking for a lux yarn to create essentially a heirloom piece.

Something that would hold up to dyeing if I decide to go with a color in the future would be good.

@knitting

Archergal ,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch @knitting I always liked Jaggerspun Zephyr for lace. It’s a 2 ply, 50% merino/50% tussah silk, 1120 yds/100 g. Made a lot of shawls with it, including the one I wore to my wedding. Strong, a bit shiny, but not a lot, drapes well.

Not sure if that’s the right # of yards/lb for your project tho?

    Stumbled across something I will definitely want to try

    Poetry mittens. Apparently in 18th-19th century when poetry and reading became more available to women, they could show off their knitting skills as well as their literary ones in mittens with parts of poems on them.

    So, it seems I'll be designing something for the first time soon. Now only to decide which poem...
