@Teri_Kanefield Hi Teri, believe Mastodon would love to hear your take on Judge Cannon “indefinitely” suspending the MAL documents case.

Teri_Kanefield ,
@Teri_Kanefield@mastodon.social avatar

@JonChevreau
Nope. Here's why: I spent two years listening to people demanding indictments. They were furious that there were no indictments. They said "We demand indictments because we need accountability!"

I said, "When indictment arrive, will not be happy. Judges will make decisions you don't like.. Juries are unpredictable. Indictments are not the accountability you think they are."

People insisted that there would never be indictments and indictments = accountability.

Now I'm worn out:)

@Teri_Kanefield@mastodon.social avatar

@JonChevreau

I am not offering a play by play commentary because the play by play doesn't matter.

The running commentary you hear is like sports commentators giving opinions when they are not actually watching the game because things are happening behind doors that we don't know.

These things take time to play out and until it all plays out, we will not have answers.

@Teri_Kanefield Thanks Teri. Despite reading all your blogs on the Outrage machine, I still find myself outraged by Cannon’s action, or rather inaction. And I’m not alone.

Teri_Kanefield ,
@Teri_Kanefield@mastodon.social avatar

@JonChevreau Of course you are.

Welcome to my world. I spent my career outraged over court decisions.

That's why I dedicated my career to representing indigents and doing what I can to help make things
better.

In the scheme of things, Cannon's decisions don't matter. Really, they don't. If you are feeling actual emotion it's because you have been persuaded that it matters.

What matters is how people vote in November. All the rest is commentary

Just remember that an entire industry is profiting from keeping you enraged over what Cannon does. People are getting rich.

The business of cable news and talk radio is to keep your eyes and ears glued to the advertisements. The business of newspapers is to get you to buy the copy and look at the advertisements therein.

These are facts. The hifalutin talk is a theory that ignores the business side of it, and therefore is an incorrect theory of journalism.

@Teri_Kanefield But it’s these kind of things that make me question whether voting in November will work in light of the gathering dark forces, up to and including the SC and the Cannons of the world. Based on the Seth Abramson thread posted today by @GottaLaff (on how 45 in effect stole the 2016 election) it’s clear he will try to do so again in 2024. And he’s far more motivated to do so, as it’s no longer the long-shot brand-building lark his 2016 run apparently was.

Teri_Kanefield ,
@Teri_Kanefield@mastodon.social avatar

@JonChevreau @GottaLaff

This is exactly why the rage merchanting is so dangerous.

I've written about this at length. Things were much worse 60, 100, and 150 years ago. We got this far because people did the work.

They didn't sit in front of a TV feeling rage and "it's all hopeless."

Despair = privilege.

PJ_Evans ,
@PJ_Evans@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau @GottaLaff
I unfollowed a couple of people here because they kept posting on the line of "it's all hopeless".

DeweyOxberger ,
@DeweyOxberger@techhub.social avatar

@JonChevreau @Teri_Kanefield @GottaLaff I'm serious about this: don't focus on whether voting works, just put on your best Ricardo Montalban, Wrath of Khan, "From Hell's Heart, I Stab at Thee" speech and cast your vote. You do what you can do, when you can do it. That's all we ask of each other.

GottaLaff ,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@DeweyOxberger @JonChevreau @Teri_Kanefield As I said (and others have), the courts won’t “save us,” voting will, pro-active action will, doing what you can will.

I posted Abramson because I’d never read that perspective before on 2016, not to depress anyone, or because I’m taking it as gospel. Just some insights that I hadn’t seen that someone passed along to me.

His take was alarming, but pretty much what we knew. Now we need to do OUR thing, whatever is in our power. We can do this.

@Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau Cannon is not merely biased, she is indolent. So her court runs really slowly, and is full of decisions that have neither work nor reason behind them. And she is God of that court.

But people wouldn't have been happy, anyway. Trump is literally on trial and yet what do I see? Gripe, gripe, gripe. He can get up to 4 years probation, by normal sentencing in New York, and he was caught red-handed. But gripe, gripe, gripe. He's stacking up contempt violations but gripe.

Teri_Kanefield ,
@Teri_Kanefield@mastodon.social avatar

@WmShakesp3are

I knew that the criminal justice system would not do what people expected.
I also knew that a lot of unethical lawyers were making a lot of money by telling people B.S. like "we need indictments for accountability" and thousands of people joined the chant.

Well, there are indictments. I was right about that.

And people are still enraged, so there really isn't more for me to do.

6G ,
@6G@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield @JonChevreau

RE
"Indictments are not the accountability you think they are"

Right, imo, dont motivate folks on the fence to register and and equally important to check if you are still registered

I feel it's better to post info that might effect this like,

only won by 77k votes in 2016 (from 3 States)

only won by 43k votes in 2020 (from 3 States)

etc
