For any community (or even post) you are in, there is a "Modlog" green button on the side bar. If I see a removed comment I click on it to see what was removed and typically 99% of it is legitimate. The only downside (which I've been meaning to make a post mentioning it), is if someone is banned it auto-deletes all of their comments but doesn't show each individual one. If you're looking for a perfect system of which people can't abuse mod powers ... well good luck and definitely let me know if you ever find it lol.

If anyone is struggling reading this and can't do the above, my only simple suggestion is to force yourself to sit in the sun for 10 minutes a day (I close my eyes and relax, lizard brain will thank you) and/or just stare at something natural (in person) for 20 minutes. The sun can help develop and regulate chemicals in your body and helps break your previous routine. With nature, most studies find you need only 2 hours out of a week to find benefits.
I know not everyone has a backyard or nearby local park, but there is nature close to you where it tries to bust through (empty lot, crappy sidewalk or overgrown lawns), I found a crappy public fishing spot recently (mercury signs posted warning the fish are bad but people keep fishing there) and just kinda park out there and wander around (there's no trails, but the electrical lines running nearby had growth under them so I just walked down it a ways and back). I try to leave my phone in my pocket (or at home if you feel comfortable doing that) and play a game of memorizing a singular plant so I can try to identify it when I get home (resist the temptation to pull out your phone for the millionth thought). Has also helped me find some wild herbs and edibles in my area which I've propagated so I can grow at home (don't eat wild food, at the bare minimum there might be piss on it or worse, extremely toxic chemicals). Kids and pets definitely enjoy the trip, even if they complain they'll eventually come to enjoy the time being spent. Kids especially are trained for more hyper focused entertainment so there's some push back, but it's not their fault and just explain it's for yourself (they understand selfishness lol). It can be as simple as leaving for something 10 minutes early so you can stop and check out a spot you like.

I wouldn't be too excited about the passenger rail expansion without diving further into it. Basically, the bulk of the HSR funding is being given to a private company with a bad track record. It will be another Amtrak situation in a decade or less once again (also suggest diving into the history of Amtrak and why it came to be).

Generally, a progressive person wouldn't have this thought even as a negative example and explicitly is targeting women with the "devil's bargain" reference (another bad wording which seems to be a theme). A common user will look at this and believe that by just having this account, they will be protected. There is no asterisk* beside e-mail recovery explaining the dangers of linking to another e-mail. In fact, a lot of their services promote linking e-mail because you can't use third party verification if you haven't setup your recovery e-mail and/or cell phone verification. I ran into this trying to help an older relative who's paranoid about online accounts, ended up being more hoops and they were dissuaded because it always come down to "enter more information to continue...privately ;)"

I guess my mind automatically excluded it because of the demon aspect being somewhat horror related (though it's a completely mild movie in terms of graphic violence) but it definitely deserves to be on this list. Partner watched it for the first time few months back and loved it (they hate horror and generally prefer family genre), just a generally great movie that keeps you intrigued and was a great change from stream-binging style entertainment.
Currently remodeling a domicile, with the sweet and expensive ability to add anything I want within reason. I plan on modernizing the place to bring it into the 21st century because this house deserves it (just a great structure with lots of history and nearing it's centennial birthday)....

I was not trying to state this as something needs to be a "great improvement" nor am I looking for only recommendations that have a certain return value in mind. I recognize most "tech" things won't be taken into consideration for resale nor will I probably stumble into a tech person who would appreciate and pay extra for the value. Ducting would involve HVAC as it's something I'm familiar with and wouldn't be an issue.
I wasn't trying to get into a financial debate with housing and never said how long I've resided at this house but I can see how you would assume that from my post. I only stated the remaining years I have as a time-limit for any recommendations (can't wait around for household fusion to come available :P /s). Think of it as a fun hobby/side-project I'm doing involving the Tech that will give me a stepping stone for familiarity and exposure to how I eventually want to do a "forever" home I'll rot away in. I imagine there are plenty of projects/ideas out there I'm missing because I always run across something fun and new (like stair lighting with sensors and programmable modes).
The architectural design and remodeling parts involving financials is a whole separate category and has been my jam for decades so I'm not worried about that (dilapidated houses call to me and I've always answered so they can be lived in again). 3 years is plenty of time if you're qualified and have the expertise, I've already spent considerable time working on this property so don't worry too much about it. This is simply a "what do we want to do with the rest of our time here and improving the house that has shown us love" scenario. I do appreciate your comment though, I realize none of this is really special and helps tamp down my enthusiasm since I always tend to get carried away. The weather monitoring is an apt example, I never liked the prepackaged setups so had plans saved to build my own. That's something that will probably be better suited for the next home.

I've done solar installs so my mind always just thinks of that type of battery bank for my needs, that's definitely a viable alternative that I could tie into the cctv system for continuous security as well without adding extra systems. I've only had a small "pc" UPS that crapped out on me years ago but I see they're scalable so I will entertain myself looking at some specs while pondering.
and here I thought I was being excessive with thinking about conduit. There is a large unfinished basement that mostly everything in it was destroyed from a flood. After I ripped everything out, installed a new stairwell, and ran new drainage to avoid the next eventual flood (as all lower elevations like to do), I was pondering running conduit for everything to protect from moisture in that area for at the very least some high wall outlets to power systems down there. I could scale that plan back and not have everything being conduit (for cost sake) but install it in specific spots for anything that won't have easy access in the future. I know of a few spots that will need new lines ran through 3 floors so the pull cables would come in handy for future use.

I've been introduced to those systems with some installs and was avoiding anything that connected to a server not under my control even if it's more complicated (completely wigs me out people are complacent with some unknown server recording EVERYTHING). I hadn't looked into "dumbing" the cameras to take advantage of their lower price points, much like you can buy a smart tv but avoid it's connectivity to use it more privately and without bloatware. Been sporadically searching security systems the past few weeks so I'll have to double down and keep that perspective in mind.

Oh nice! I had home assistant on my radar from other open source threads I read but hadn't run across the site link or realized they have smart hubs for sale with it. I've been hesitant with the automation setup because of the complications you mentioned. I imagined the high priced homes/condos with automated systems probably came with a subscription service for customer support with the equipment installed but wasn't sure if that assumption was right. If I can pull the same thing off with an open source project that's reliable and has custom equipment built for it then maybe it's worth looking into after all.
The only problem with that is if you're pumping air out you have to think about where the air is coming in from. Older fireplaces are notorious for this because any air escaping through the chimney has to be replaced usually resulting in the rest of the house becoming actually colder through air gaps/cracks. Newer built houses even have ductwork for controlled air introduction when using exhaust fans like the range hood over the stove to maintain relative pressures with energy efficient houses (this house is nowhere near that level yet, but once newer windows are installed and I can seal the outlets I replace/install it will be one step closer).
One thought I did have is running the HVAC return through the area, it would reduce the relative humidity of the house as I've already installed several dehumidifiers for the closed crawl spaces I've sealed up and insulated but this whole geographical area is just horrible (/s about the servers being a dehumidifier, but realistically the equipment has to have some type of impact even if 1% lol) . Nearly every house I've worked on has some type of moisture issue but home owners typically don't care unless it becomes life-threatening or threatens the structure. My thoughts on the return is so cold air isn't directly blasted into the area as the dramatic temperature change might introduce condensation, the calculations for the CFM (airflow) have to be exact though so I'm not killing any systems early. The house has an old A/C system with an oil heating system (also has propane and electrical heating in other locations, idk if the person before me had a thing for collecting all the systems but it's rather insane), the a/c doesn't cover the entire structure though so I either have to think about replacing the entire setup (it is rather old but looks well maintained surprisingly) or milking the old system while installing a secondary hvac system for the unconditioned areas (mainly 2nd floor, plenty of attic space to install it which will probably be sealed as well if I do).
You definitely hit on a great idea though, I was planning on installing a secondary thermostat in the server area. If I did a return through and set it to active the hvac system fan when a temperature threshold is reached, in the winter it would disperse the heat through the house and I wouldn't have to worry about the system switching from A/C to Heat or how I would continue to cool an area now getting hot air directly pumped into it. Then in the summer the air returning would be directly cooled when necessary and released back into the house so I'm not worrying about another outside vent opening requiring filters that need to be replaced/inspected etc. Might be able to pull off the airflow requirements with something as simple as a slotted closet door a lot of bedrooms have. I would be concerned someone might replace the door one day without realizing it's importance so maybe dedicated wall venting into the server area is safer, even if it looked worse.
Fiber is a sore subject lol, it was a big local deal when fiber was coming to town with newspaper articles and everything about the big development and how great everything was gonna be with the upgrade in speed. Lots of crews all over the county for months (maybe years? time is fickle) and even had them running the lines on my street and a relatives on the other side of the main town. Turns out they decided to not actually make fiber available for the area, it's just running through. I understand you can't just splice into fiber lol, still irks me I have a box I can't touch or move with "Fiber" labelled on it sitting on the property though and have to deal with cable internet that runs like it's a DSL connection.
With wired Ethernet to every room, would something of this type of connection be aesthetically pleasing? I would like to bundle everything so there's not an excessive amount of wall plates and others have suggested running two lines in parallel with STP cat6a (cat8 will probably be saved for the next place if it has fiber available). I'm just worried about the look of having several wall jacks or several unknown connections that might confuse someone (I will label everything but that only goes so far for understanding). If I include coaxial it might look a little like this style of outlet if I'm not running two ethernet ports. I'm starting to lean into the coaxial/single ethernet just because cable/satellite tv is still king around these parts and people love their boxes.
If you had to have a modem box for internet with coaxial or DSL, would you prefer that tucked away into the server closet as well? or keep that in a separate area with the phone connections and just run an ethernet from the modem to the server closet where the router and switch setup are at?
I'm only replying for visibility at this point because of the upvotes and the dangerous scenarios that are being promoted with this advice. Breaker with LOTO would be more acceptable but even then I wouldn't trust it. People have been killed because something was wired up wrong and circuits were accidentally connected (meaning breakers off but currents still going from a connection down the line to another breaker, it can appear that the circuit is dead until a switch is flipped sending current and happens in home lighting constantly). Also, someone can simply plug the device into another outlet leaving them with a death on their hands.
I know it's dramatic and these are just comments, but something like this could save or take a life. I've seen too many workplace accidents and refuse to work in unsafe conditions or environments anymore even if it costs me the job. Last unsafe worksite I was in, nearly all of the workers walked out together when we arrived in the morning to start at a new site and saw what the project manager had in store for us (probably helped that the owner was hated and payroll had been getting screwed up for weeks). I'll never forget that day and still keep in contact with most of them. We are all waiting and scared for the day a mass casualty is reported from the shitty work they were trying to make us do (some did report it to the authorities, but never heard what came of those reports).

There are so many users optimizing and digging into the core of open source versus proprietary that with so many randoms actions there's less "vulnerable" dark spots available. I honestly feel like the "abolish police" thing was taken up by either bad actors or unfortunate miscommunications (probably both). Back during the peak of the police brutality riots, I read and watched a vast array of interviews and/or op-eds of which no one was saying vanquish all law-enforcement. There were some "hot spots" of police corruption running rampant in some known departments, basically needing a clean house strategy to start fresh, but all the caveats of the movements had a stance of reform, deescalation, and an emphasis on social services being used in lieu of armed response for non-violent calls.
I typed this out the other day but forgot to get back to it and finish to submit this comment. I wanted to include my interpretation of the other survey images and link the other articles/survey data with it including how gallop ran the poll. I'm not delusional with righteousness to the point where I don't get what you're saying. Obviously we're all having conversations involving the nuances so it's a legitimate debate. It's late and I'm having trouble breaking it down into a short reply without a wall of text so hopefully you'll fill in the gaps of my meaning.
I suppose it depends on what "hat" you're wearing. Are we individuals surviving and trying to continue in a turbulent society like 99% of the populace, or are we participating and forming a society we wish to see our younger generations take over? No matter my rhetoric, I don't fault anyone for the actions they take in today's world so don't take anything I say personally. That being said, "land" is a finite resource. There is no getting over or around that. It's a simple physics matter that everyone is just glossing over for their financial portfolio. These are the "Oil Baron's Lite" of the old world brought to the new. You can't think of the new world without the realization that the world is getting smaller over time. I refuse to believe anyone is that dense when it comes to physical manifestations, the "world pie" in being continually split up amongst the more fortunate.
Same with the company. Sure, owning a small portion of a profitable company is fucking fantastic in today's eyes and society. Look at Hershey or Apple with the continued labor practices everyone promotes with purchases. You would be financially insane to say those are bad companies to be invested in. Is that the end to the societal metric though? Profit over outcome? Which is your formula, "Past societal norms + societal progression" or "societal progression + Future societal norms".
The past "Venture Capitalist" in the 1920's might've gotten away without knowing where the actual "labor" or environmental degradation of your invested companies profit might impact or subjugate from. In the 2020's though? You're either reaping too much of a profit to care, or you're too lazy to do due diligence so you're not worried about the actual risk of an investment after all.
