Nina Baranowska, @philipphacker, Alessandro Fabris & I published a new pre-print:

'Non-discrimination law in Europe: a primer for non-lawyers'

We have tried to write it in such a ways that non-lawyers can follow the text. We hope we succeeded a bit :)

If you have suggestions to improve the paper, we would love to hear them!

That's the fun thing of a pre-print: we can still amend things.

Oh, today is my 8th anniversary of working on Mastodon. I was 23 when I started, finishing my last year of university, still living at my parent's place. I had no idea what I was getting myself into or that it would consume the next 8 years of my life almost completely.

US. ‘Data broker X-Mode Social and its successor Outlogic will be prohibited from sharing or selling any sensitive location data to settle Federal Trade Commission allegations that the company sold precise location data that could be used to track people’s visits to sensitive locations such as medical and reproductive health clinics, places of religious worship and domestic abuse shelters.’ https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/01/ftc-order-prohibits-data-broker-x-mode-social-outlogic-selling-sensitive-location-data

Checked in to a hotel yesterday afternoon. Settled in to take a nap. Shortly thereafter, what sounded like a 727 engine started up outside my door. Tried to ignore it until the periodic banging on the door started about 15 minutes later. Turned out to be this little fella, “Rosie 1049” which ran into the room as soon as I opened the door. I quickly got dressed and carried it to the elevator.

The robot uprising is going to be amazing.

Wow. If this guy’s life were a film script or a book, I’d dismiss it as too far-fetched.

‘“Han" van Meegeren (10 October 1889 – 30 December 1947) was a Dutch painter and portraitist, considered one of the most ingenious art forgers of the 20th century. Van Meegeren became a national hero after World War II when it was revealed that he had sold a forged painting to Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.’ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_van_Meegeren Seriously, read the rest!

Europe and the world must do better. ‘Flying in Europe up to 30 times cheaper than train, says Greenpeace. Campaigners say cheap flights, made possible by tax breaks for airlines, are encouraging people to heat the planet… In Europe, airlines pay no taxes on kerosene and little tax on tickets or VAT.’ https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jul/20/flying-in-europe-up-to-30-times-cheaper-than-train-says-greenpeace Report: https://greenpeace.at/uploads/2023/07/report-ticket-prices-of-planes-vs-trains-in-europe.pdf

‘Globalization, the argument goes, may have enriched certain elites, but it hurt many other people… There is much that is true about such narratives—if you look only at each country on its own. Zoom out beyond the level of the nation-state to the entire globe, and the picture looks different. At that scale, the story of inequality in the 21st century is the reverse: the world is growing more equal than it has been for over 100 years.’ Branko Milanovic https://www.foreignaffairs.com/world/great-convergence-equality-branko-milanovic
