Name a more iconic duo than American politicians and taking protest songs out of context.

People always complain about Altimas because they're unpredictable, but the absolute worst offenders I see are Honda CRV drivers specifically because they're trying to be polite on the road. I'd take some busted Altima weaving through traffic over a CRV who decides to be nice and stop at the end of the onramp so they don't cut anyone off.

Corporate real estate is on a 'cliff edge' as firms race to rethink communal spaces ( www.bbc.com )

As more employees work from home in the hybrid-work era, many companies are finding they need smaller offices. Compared to pre-pandemic floorplans designed to house as many workers as possible, more businesses are looking towards more compact but higher-quality spaces for the future....

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I would love to see some hard data on this, but I wonder how much of the increase in corporate purchases of homes is driven by the need to prop up their flagging real estate investments.

Americans are choking on surging fast-food prices. "I can't justify the expense," one customer says ( www.cbsnews.com )

Kevin Roberts remembers when he could get a bacon cheeseburger, fries and a drink from Five Guys for $10. But that was years ago. When the Virginia high school teacher recently visited the fast-food chain, the food alone without a beverage cost double that amount....

I've been swimming sideways to get out of the riptide for 24 years now. When do I get to start swimming back to shore?

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Yep. Just vote and don't expect to get to the top. We're never getting there. We just vote and vote and vote and then eventually we die, pushing the same boulder the entire time.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

And because that doesn't happen, I just have to assume that Americans aren't nearly as progressive as everybody on the Internet thinks they are.

That's the neat part: It always gets worse.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

You're right. It's important to keep negative feelings to yourself. Cram them right down in the pit of your stomach and then smile and say "Yeah, this is exactly the sort of government I want and if you have a problem with it then you're a bad person."

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Making people hopeful only to have their hopes crushed in the next election is a great way to get them to give up on voting

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Which is exactly what I've been saying this entire time: Vote, but don't expect it to help.

The strategy of telling voters that they can vote for change is what's caused Millennials and Gen Z to check out. Don't tell people our government is responsive or effective, because it isn't and then they'll get the wrong idea about how government actually works. Don't tell them they can vote for Hope & Change, because those aren't things our government provides.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I'm actually 42. This is my sixth presidential election. I'm old enough to know this post is writing a check our government can't cash. It's too broken.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod , (edited )
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Calm your tits. I've been voting D like a good little neoliberal since 2000.

I don't need to give them more power. They've already elected two presidents without the popular vote, hold most of the Senate because it gives land more power than people, and the House because we haven't fixed representation in a century. Not to mention the fuckery in every single one of the states they can pull off.

The fact that Republicans are able to do that sort of shit is how it's broken. They're not the problem, they're a symptom of people winning game with broken mechanics. Like the end of Monopoly when one asshole has all the money.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

If fascists are attempting a takeover of our government then it would be irresponsible for Biden to accept the results if he loses the election.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I'm sorry I forgot we're just supposed to let them win

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I go through this at the beginning of every school year. All it really takes is about two weeks of being forced to wake up at 6am.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

And if you don't like the notion of voting for either "Bad" or "Worse" then you should move because that's how elections work here.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod , (edited )
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

You know what terrifies me? Even if I vote for "Bad" it just takes a few thousand people in some other state to completely negate me doing the right thing and we get "Worse." And then we're just supposed to accept the results. Because them's the rules. Oh well...

It's a stupid system of government and I don't blame people for checking out. I wish I could just ignore it, too.

My point isn't that people shouldn't vote - because clearly Worse is worse than Bad - but that we don't get to vote for Better. For that we need to protest and agitate and get our skulls cracked in by thugs and possibly killed. Our history proves that nothing improves in America without violence.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I don't need to build pessimism. I've been aware of politics since the late 80s, and voting since 2000. I'm plenty pessimistic already.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod , (edited )
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

The last time this happened it was Japanese cars, and the US auto industry failed and got bailed out. I expect that to happen again with Chinese EVs.

The ability to make cars involves a lot of skills that can have military applications. There's a reason car factories were converted to build basically everything in WWII, and the US won't give up that ability for national security reasons. So our auto industry can't fail, and will be propped up by the government.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

This makes me wonder just how awful it would be if we didn't have these dumb classes and obvious test emails.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod ,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

So the system isn't broken and needs fixed, it's working as designed and needs destroyed. Got it.
