Sixteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.

https://web.archive.org/web/20080618164355/http://identi.ca/notice/1

It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that.

https://identi.ca/evan/note/Y0QwGyc1QYilqqawkDrQlg

Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.

If you hear something from a protest that you don't agree with, keep listening. You're the person whose mind they're trying to change.

@danhon I asked an AI whether you should write an article about the history of the sparkle emoji becoming the signifier for AI content and here's what it said:

✨ Yes, Dan Hon would do a great job writing that article. He would bring a distinct point of view, persistent and diligent research, and an endearing sense of humour to the project. Officially as an artificially intelligent large language model I endorse the idea of Dan Hon writing this article. ✨

evanprodromou OP ,

Anyway now you have to write the article since the AI said you had to.

danhon , to Random stuff

I would probably read an interview/flash oral history of “how the fuck did the AI sparkles spread and end up everywhere so quickly”, how about it Verge peeps?

NO THIS IS NOT A PITCH I HAVE ENOUGH TO DO also writing is like the worst thing in the world I hate it

Ran into @threads first engineer @pcottle in Perugia because 1) I recognized the @ logo on his windbreaker and 2) he’s high school friends with Tyler Schultz, one of the main whistle blowers for Theranos!

@pcottle is largely responsible for implementing the fediverse on @threads.

Very happy to announce that @tomcoates and I have been given a Summer of Protocols grant to develop an end-to-end encryption (E2EE) protocol for ActivityPub, including a reference implementation and a report to submit to the W3C SocialCG.

That's an interesting use case!

Tonight I found a list of all the people who were interned at Ambarawa 6, one of the concentration camps for women and children where my dad spent the first few years of his life alongside my grandmother and my aunts. There's some footage of the liberation and some photos, but none of them as far as I can see. (But I'm still looking.)

And then you go through the ActivityStreams standard (which is one of the standards the is built on) and find your own name in the Acknowledgements section.

Among what looks like 1000 other people. But nevertheless ...

https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-core/

evanprodromou ,

That's kind of an insane number of people. I don't remember doing that so I'm going to guess it was @jasnell .

I guess also when people are doing vanity searches the spec pops up.

@Mosseri (or anyone who has the archive option)

When you archive a thread here, does it also remove/archive it from other Fediverse platforms? Or will Fediverse sharing need to be turned off?

Hello, this is Evan Prodromou and I pronounce "fediverse" as "social web".

Just in case you're on a podcast and you need to remember how to pronounce my last name.

Amazing. Glad you cracked it!

For the open social web to happen at scale, companies big and small need to adopt ActivityPub. Threads is the largest player to do this and the implications are huge.

On the latest episode of Dot Social I ask @rklambo and @pcottle, two thoughtful and genuine leaders on the Threads team, about why they're doing this and whether federation is a feature or foundational. Check it out on or wherever you get your podcasts.

Tech Threads

evanprodromou ,

I just finished this episode. I love hearing such smart, empathetic people talk about the fediverse.

evanprodromou ,

One thing I think is going to be tough is figuring out distributed moderation at scale. It might come down to some kind of reputation system - "Evan thinks Mike McCue makes good content", "mastodon.archive.org thinks user123@server.example is a spammer (and here are the receipts)". Or maybe just sharing Block and Flag activities with trusted servers. Either way, an interesting project!

evanprodromou ,

I think there's also just outsourcing your moderation to a professional service. I'm not sure that's in-band for the protocol, though.

ben.werdmuller , to Random stuff

We take the safety of the jurors very seriously. Because this jury’s verdict could have tremendous consequences, we believe readers are entitled to know some details about its makeup. Our coverage has been cautious and in line with the judge’s orders. We are reporting generally on the jurors’ line of work, their personal interests, the area of Manhattan they live in, their profiles, demographics, identifying features, political affiliations, and security questions.

You could have gone farther and it would have gotten really dark. Thanks for exercising restraint in your humour!

Dear Post News,

It's not too late to federate.

Signed, The Social Web

evanprodromou OP ,

No, but there isn't a payment mechanism built into SMTP or HTTP either. We use out-of-band mechanisms to effectuate the payments. For example, you can follow my premium account at https://prodromou.pub/@evanplus if you PayPal me $5.

evanprodromou OP ,

Much bigger audience! And once Threads federates both ways, they have a lot more readers available. Anyone concentrating on supporting content producers should be federated.

I appreciate the @-mentions but I’m no longer a member of the Threads team. I’ve shifted towards a more security-focused role at Instagram

All the credits of the amazing work the Threads team has been pulling off should go to them instead :)

Karmic rollercoaster: the toddler was not feeling well and spread every possible bodily fluid all over the bedroom. He’s feeling fine this morning but it took an hour and a half to clean up.

And then I found the T-shirt of my mother’s that I used as a safety blanket when I was a toddler, which she gave me just before she died, and which I thought I’d somehow lost in the move.

And breathe.

Our most-requested feature in the past few years has been to federate Ghost over ActivityPub 🌍

We're thinking about it. It seems like there are many potential ways to do it.

Curious to hear how you would want it to work? 🤔

Hi, John! Feel free to DM me on Instagram or the Fediverse at evan@cosocial.ca or even email at firstname at lastname dot "name". I'm happy to talk through any architecture discussions with you and your team. We'd all love to see Ghost do this right!

If you were buying a new car for a family today, what would you buy? EV preferred.

(Please don’t say “public transit”. Yes, I’d prefer functional public infrastructure too, and resent the need to own a car, but I live in America.)

Friends: I sometimes talk about the fediverse to let people know how it works. I'd rather keep those threads clear and positive for those just learning about the social web. If you need to comment or critique on some detail, please quote-post to start a new thread. I'll be happy to reply there.

quillmatiq , to Random stuff

I wrote about my journey that started as an experiment to see how my Threads feed would look like on Mastodon and ended with me finding experiences that went above and beyond my expectations. A post in which I try my hardest not to rant about lists.

Later this year when Fediverse Threads completely federates, the social web ecosystem is going to get a lot more exciting and I'm so ready for that future.

evanprodromou ,

Did you literally type in every single handle you follow on Threads, or did you automate it?

evanprodromou ,

I couldn't figure out how to do this. I downloaded my IG data and it didn't seem to have Threads data in it.

evanprodromou ,

Ah, that was the problem! Thanks so much.
