Our system is pretty broken, but if you’re given a lever to pull (voting) you may as well pull it. There is no benefit to be gained from opting out.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Optimistic thinking! But I’m afraid such protests are futile for many reasons. The biggest issue is that refusing to vote has no visibility; it is not like a real protest or real activism. You simply disappear in numbers small enough to not matter, and those in power will continually claim the power until contested.

There is no reconciling with those in power through pacifism. History teaches us this time and time again. Continue to vote while you can, and remember Trotsky’s ideals for when things go bad.

  1. Never trust the ruling class
  2. Control your leaders
  3. Have confidence in your own abilities

I see more posts preemptively bringing up bothsidesism than bothsidesism itself.

I logged into Telegram today to this update from Durov. It reads like a bunch of hogwash from someone who is hiding something. They are eyeing investor funding soon, right? (EDIT: eyeing an IPO https://www.techopedia.com/news/telegram-eyes-ipo-as-it-aims-to-become-profitable-in-2025) A lot of things seem to be coinciding with him slinging mud about his competitors.

I didn't get recommended it here, but elsewhere. I ended up paying for a years worth last year and yeah I like it better than pretty much everything else. There is still a rare occasion that I need to use Google, but that is maybe once a week whereas with DuckDuckGo it was multiple times per-day.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe in the USA it is easier due to our relaxed (almost non-existent) business oversight from the government? Not sure.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

China of today is capitalist in the same way the USA is, with minor differences. Major corporations owning almost everything with government backing and influence.

*braces for down votes and possible ban* ( pawb.social )

I've been seeing a worrying number of these people on Lemmy lately, sharing enlightened takes including but not limited to "voting for Biden is tantamount to fascism" and "the concept of an assigned gender, or even an assigned name, at birth is transphobic" and none of them seem to be interested in reading more than the first...

@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

January 6th folks were not revolutionists. They were there to re-install the same leader (Trump) into the same power structure that already existed. Their actions were pro-government, just for their side rather than the other.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

They have a point for the USAs flavor of democracy specifically. I don’t have a choice on the ballot to vote for a working class person who shares my struggles. My options are those who came from very wealthy families and have tremendous influence.

You need a lot of money and power to get on ballots and to actually win anything. So yeah we have a democracy, but we only get to vote for the wealthy who are largely influenced (or bought and paid for entirely) by corporations and other ultra-wealthy people who want policy written for themselves.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

You know, that’s fair too. We are pretty right-wing compared to most of Europe.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Listen man. If this is the thing that is gonna kill me, I’m looking.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

This part really got me:

“You have review boards, that’s fine, but it’s got to be done in ways where you have the Sheriff or Chief of Police appointing people,” the governor said. “It can’t be people that have an agenda.”

The Sheriff and the Chief of Police are the very people who have an agenda. Of course DeSantis knows this. Sane people in Florida need to evacuate as soon as possible.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Those that want to suffer for the sake of the Democratic party may stay.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

I grew up in rural Missouri. Same thing here just as you described. My town had 300 people in it, but the town close by had around 8,000. Last I heard the hospital there was on the brink of collapse because nobody there can afford to pay after visiting. So most people won’t visit at all and die prematurely. Everyone is panicking because if the hospital closes the nearest one will be 1.5hrs away. A situation entirely preventable with subsidized health care. The hospital would get what they needed that way.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

His supporters would end up at the ballot box either way. They are dedicated to the brand.

Fact check: Trump, telling a completely fictional story, falsely claims he released ‘the tape’ of his Zelensky call ( www.cnn.com )

Former President Donald Trump told an entirely fictional story on Saturday about how he had supposedly outwitted his Democratic opponents by releasing “the tape” of the 2019 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that was a key factor in Trump’s first impeachment....

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. He isn’t concerned with the concepts of lying or telling the truth or even being coherent and rational. He simply states whatever he needs to at a given moment to elevate himself or give himself an advantage. I don’t think he goes through the rational pause most people do before they lie. He doesn’t think about it at all.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Someone paid it. Not entirely convinced it was directly from Trump.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Not that it would matter. Trump doesn’t honor agreements.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

The definitions are tricky based on how you read them, but no. Your role in society is to perform labor (I'm assuming), and the fruits of that labor are then forfeited to those above you for a wage. Thus they have the capital and would belong to the "capitalist class."

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Ok you defined this way better than I did.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, they’re not leaving. The only way they would leave is if the service were to be physically shut down. Pretty sure you could make everyone watch 1 minute long ads on app open and they would still stay.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

This makes me incredibly sad. We can't have shit in this country due to pathetic and incompetent governance. What's worse is that it will take a generation of time for us to dig out of this hole even if we start moving 100% in the right direction, today. It makes me sick.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Taking our heads out of the sand is a start. I would go into more detail but I checked your profile and I don’t think I’ll convince you of anything so we will just leave it here. Not in the mood for an argument over the same shit that keeps happening in this country.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve largely stopped using them. I only buy from them if I cannot find what I need elsewhere which is quite rare.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

If the offense can pick it back up, we win. It’ll be tough. Let’s go Chiefs!

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

I can’t fuckin’ believe it. The Chiefs are legendary!

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Respectfully, punching down does nothing but make people who are suffering feel worse. Posting here about how much better you have it than us isn’t helpful. We already know how messed up it is here.

Come to the midwest of the USA. You'll find all of that shit out here, too, if you know where to look.

That is not why I brought attention to this partnership. It was to point out that DDG was still willing to associate with and partner with Brave. Folks who are hyper-opposed to supporting Brave due to their CEO may not know this.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

I can’t believe it. I mean I can. But I can’t. I love this damn team.

jmanes ,

Tough game so far but I’m staying positive. Just need to be better in the end zone.

jmanes ,

Pretty chill game. Glad that Chris Jones got his bonus and we kept our other stars rested. I think we have a good chance against Miami next week.

jmanes ,

Yep, I use Kagi as well. Great results!

The rodent is like “well, not what I had in mind but all right.”

jmanes ,

I think I like the bridge approach more. Let me use my own client for mail and calendar etc rather than these siloed apps.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

It’s good that they are doing this, but Linux support across the board is abysmal. I don’t think Linux users should have to expect the bare-minimum out of a company that charges high prices for their service.

jmanes ,
@jmanes@lemmy.world avatar

Even though I am on macOS, I have thought about leaving them, too. Mostly because I am paying a lot and their tertiary services such as calendar, drive and pass are lackluster. It feels like I am paying a steep price for them to focus on offering new products that are worse than the competition. With things like 1Password and iCloud drive (with advanced data protection enabled), it is hard to justify paying Proton hundreds of dollars for Mail and VPN alone.

Donald Trump using bail bondsman rings alarm bells about his finances ( www.newsweek.com )

Donald Trump reportedly used a bail bondsman after being arrested at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday, paying $20,000 of his bond set at $200,000 and taking out a loan for the rest of it. The fact that the former president resorted to such a measure has sparked questions on social media about the state of his...

I used Plex for years, and it is the superior product (if you pay) compared to Open Source alternatives. However, after seeing Plex's recent incentive pivots and looking for investors I jumped shipped to Jellyfin. The thermometor of enshittification is indicating that Plex is on its way out.

Folks who haven't looked at alternatives yet, do so now.
