Still exclusive to Google/Samsung proprietary apps. AFAIK they also do extensive SafetyNet attestation checks, so it isn't even possible requires a bit of work (see below) to use RCS on a custom ROM like GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, DivestOS, or LineageOS, or even a rooted stock OS. Unless that does a complete 180°, I'm sticking with Signal

sp6 ,

These don't exactly "fit in" with the rest of the list, but on Deck I've personally had a blast with CarX Drift Racing Online and the Sonic &ASRT Collection

[Game] Apex Legends Upheaval update live with EOS Anti-Cheat (temporarily) breaking it on Steam Deck / Linux, upgrade to proton experimental to fix ( www.gamingonlinux.com )

It switched from the standalone version of EAC to Epic Online Services anticheat instead, breaking steam deck support in the process....

sp6 ,

Unfortunately they block old reddit for VPN users now

For anyone wondering why the first-past-the-post voting system (used by most countries) is bad, what the alternatives are, and why those alternatives are better, Nicky Case has an excellent write-up that covers all of that: https://ncase.me/ballot/

sp6 ,

I would check the linux gaming wiki's distro recommendations: https://linux-gaming.kwindu.eu/index.php?title=Getting_started_with_Linux#Recommendations

Mint is fine for daily use type stuff, but there are some odd gaming bugs. IIRC Cinnamon (Mint's default desktop environment) specifically has higher input lag than Gnome or KDE, and Lutris dropped official Mint support due to issues from Mint's tweaks.

I personally use Pop!_OS and it's been pretty good, although I have been a little frustrated about the 22.04 base, as I've noticed some packages (like Mangohud and GOverlay) are very out of date. But aside from that, I have no complaints.

sp6 ,

I specifically bought a Pixel 5a because it was the last Pixel with a headphone jack. Then after a year, it died on me, and they sent me a 6a as a replacement.

I miss the jack. A lot. But it's hard to justify buying a whole new phone for one. Once this one dies, I don't know what I'll do.

sp6 ,

This game has been free on Epic, free on GOG through Prime gaming, and free through gamepass. Does anyone know if they're counting those free claims as "sales"?

sp6 ,

Gamepass isn't for me, but dual booting for it is understandable. But office? I've found LibreOffice and OnlyOffice are usually "good enough," and if you really need true MS Office, I believe they offer web editors now

sp6 ,

Considering Counter-Strike 2 completely dropped Mac support, I highly doubt it

sp6 , (edited )

400+, paid for 0. Won't give them a dime until Sweeney stops with his anti-linux shenanigans, and the "buying exclusivity" thing doesn't make me too happy either

sp6 ,

I cannot find any info about this. Source?

sp6 ,

Both Bitwarden and KeePass are very secure, certainly much better than something like Lastpass...

Bitwarden's server and client are open source and completely E2EE (similar to Signal, the server is zero-knowledge). And even if you don't trust Bitwarden's official server, you can host your own.

KeePass is fine too, but it doesn't have a centralized server like Bitwarden. You have to use other tools to sync your vault between devices. Which some people prefer, but others dislike. Just depends on your preference.

Well, wallet and needs. The 7900XTX is the best, but I'd never recommend it to someone who only plays decade-old games, or even simpler modern games.

If you want a good idea of how GPUs compare to each other, the Tom's Hardware GPU hierarchy is a great source. Just keep in mind that on linux specifically, NVIDIA has a bit more of a performance drop compared to AMD. Comparing the 3090 and 6800XT on that chart vs. Tom's hardware, seems to be roughly 5%-7% more of a dip

Helldivers 2's anti-cheat (nProtect GameGuard) is kernel-level on Windows, but has a userspace fallback for linux

    Edit: see this post

    sp6 ,

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is to try and build up a pavlovian association with bed/bedroom = sleep. Don't do any mentally stimulating tasks while in your bed or even bedroom - no TV or youtube, no mindless phone scrolling, no gaming, etc. Bedroom should be for sleep and sex, and that's it. If you cut everything else out for a while, your brain will much more strongly associate bed(room) with sleepytime.

Other things people have mentioned are valid too. Consistent sleep schedule, don't eat/drink/exercise for 2-3hrs before bed, etc.

Apex Legends streamers surprised to find aimbot and other hacks added to their PCs in the middle of major competition via anti-cheat software ( www.pcgamer.com )

Wow it finally happened. So glad I switched to steam running on linux mint last week. I refused to install helldivers because it wanted to install some no holds barred god level permissions anti-cheat software. Windows 11 was the last straw for me. Good times.....

    sp6 ,

This clip is him installing Malwarebytes, after the hacking/cheating incident happened

    sp6 ,

There isn't much sandboxing in Wine, but at least on linux, the AC is forced to run in userspace (instead of having root privileges). So it's not quite as invasive, but it still has access to everything your non-root account has access to. Which is still a lot. Probably not much better from a privacy perspective, but at least a little better from a security perspective.

    sp6 ,

The clips of the hacks being installed/activated are pretty crazy:

Note that the title has been edited: we do NOT know if this was EAC yet. The article says it "may have been." EAC has claimed it wasn't them (but of course they're going to claim that). Instead, it could have been Apex's source engine. Or, it could have been two individually compromised machines from software completely unrelated to Apex; remember, these are two high-profile targets, after all. We just have to wait and see what the real cause was. Regardless, I wouldn't play Apex for at least the next day or two, just to be safe.

    sp6 ,

I think the Deep Rock developers are owned by Embracer now, so I'm not sure if that counts as "indie" anymore, even if they're still a small (and previously somewhat home-grown) studio. But it's still a damn good game - ROCK AND STONE

All low settings looks pretty rough, but I'm also usually not super concerned about battery life. I personally use:

    • DX12
    • 103FOV
    • FSR 1.0 highest quality (2.0 looks horrible in DRG for some reason, and lower qualities didn't help a ton)
    • Anti-aliasing: TAA (looks best with FSR)
    • Texture Quality: Ultra (with CryoUtilities, zero performance hit compared to low, but idk about stock)
    • Anti-Aliasing Quality: Ultra (zero performance hit compared to low)
    • View Distance: Ultra (zero performance hit compared to low)
    • Shadow Quality: High (even though low will get you a 10% fps boost, I couldn't stand the zero shadows, and high only has a ~2% hit compared to medium)
    • Effects: High (lowest setting that keeps screen space refections, but this is a 10% fps hit compared to medium and low. Low and medium were identical FPS)
    • Post-Processing: Medium (or high if you use the Better Post Processing Reloaded mod, or if you're okay with chromatic abberation). Low will remove ambient occlusion, but has a 10% FPS boost
    • 11W TDP
    • V-sync'd 40-45hz (still tuning that in)

However, I use CryoUtilities and have a pretty hefty ~40mV undervolt (which can sometimes improve performance). Also note that I have the original LCD model, and apparently the LCD and OLED handle TDP settings pretty differently. So YMMV with these settings.

I released my first game on Steam and got rid of impostor syndrome!

My first game Mushy Score is out on Steam! I have been creating games since I was a child but never felt like a real game dev. Now I finally have a game that I can show to other people.

Mushy Score is a 2D Roguelike where you fight against endless waves of enemies. Collect points and try to get a high score! I am super exited for the release !

If you like similar games go check it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2480740/Mushy_Score/

Awesome work. Out of curiosity, what engine did you use and how was your experience with it?

If you want a good laugh, check out The Looker. It's a short satire of the Witness, free on Steam

There are lots of recommendations for Herman Miller - just wanted to point out this is their CEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpYln4ZD0gk

I have a Herman Miller Aeron and kind of wish I had gotten SteelCase instead. Either a SteelCase Leap (any version), Gesture, or AMIA, they all seem nice.

I don't think it's possible to filter the trending games that way, but you can filter the all-time highest rated games that way by using the "Platforms" filter in instant search: https://steamdb.info/instantsearch/?refinementList%5Boslist%5D%5B0%5D=Steam%20Deck%20Verified&refinementList%5Boslist%5D%5B1%5D=Steam%20Deck%20Playable

It also has an option to filter the search by year(s) and by number of ratings/followers, so you could select the current and/or previous year to see what has been trending well-received and popular in the (relatively) short-term.

Just banned from Worldnews for defending Israel against Hamas terrorism

Got back to lemmy barely today, was reading worldnews and put some comments. Got banned in 20 minutes. What happened to this place? People were complaining about reddit mods and now this? You can spread antisemitic propaganda freely and we can't even comment? Fucking hell

    sp6 ,

There are some story-rich RPG shooters that are almost pre-2010 I could recommend, like maybe Dishonored or Fallout 3/New Vegas. But pre-2010 is tough, only ones I can think of are the System Shock or maybe Thief games.

Content / Image posting restrictions (based on network)

Just wanted to keep everyone in the loop. If you encounter an issue where you cannot post or comment, but voting is functioning correctly, it is most likely because we have implemented a block for VPN & Tor users. If you are using these services, you can still take part in activities such as voting, reporting posts, and...

    sp6 ,

How detailed is .world's IP logging? I'm sure many privacy-minded users think that's important to know before disabling their VPNs.

Additionally, would it be possible to allow posts/comments that don't have any links or images? Or does even that introduce too much risk?

    sp6 OP ,

If you're looking for an indie alternative, Roboquest seems like a good recent shooter for two players. It's on both Steam and GOG. Gunfire Reborn also seems fun.

These aren't indies, but there's also Deep Rock Galactic, L4D2, and of course the original Helldivers.

    sp6 ,

You could probably play the SCS Truck Simulator games basically indefinitely.

Vampire Survivors is an absurdly addicting Deck game, and can be considered grindy if you go for the eggs late-game.

Deep Rock Galactic is a good one too, if you're okay with no aim assist and playing solo or with randoms.

    sp6 OP ,

Considering the CS:GO -> CS2 upgrade completely dropped Mac support, I wouldn't get my hopes up

    sp6 OP , (edited )

Update: the 64bit_linux_test branch is now public! Go test it! It can't connect to public servers yet, but it's there.

To opt in, right click on TF2 in your Steam library, then go to properties -> betas -> select x64_linux_test from the dropdown.

Some people are reporting a 25%-30% FPS increase, which is just crazy.

    sp6 OP ,

Valve probably intentionally disabled it, just to be cautious. I think all of the other beta branches are that way too.

Has anyone gotten a game or account ban using Linux with Lutris or Heroic Games Launcher?

I built a PC for the family yesterday, and I’m hoping to get away with going 100% Linux. What makes me a little nervous is that Epic Games, GOG, battle.net, EA store, etc don’t officially support Linux. If I try using Lutris, or Heroic Games Launcher, or something similar to use those platforms, is there a chance my account...

    sp6 ,

As far as I know, no one has ever gotten their account banned store-wide.

Like you mentioned, sometimes games with anti-cheats like Apex Legends or Overwatch will falsely ban linux users (from that specific game - not the whole Battle.net or EA store), but they usually undo those bans within a week or so for most users.

I was hit with one of the Apex bans, and it was overturned within a week or two. But there were a few people who I am pretty convinced did not cheat and are still banned, so maybe be cautious with that particular game.

    sp6 ,

Christmas morning my phone broke (shutoff at >50% and wouldn’t turn on at all). The day before a flight. When all of the stores to get a quick replacement were closed. And the only way I could get any info about my flight was by having my email’s 2FA keys, which were on my broken phone, and the only backup was on my desktop, which was 500km+ away.

Had to walk our catsitter through sending me the backup, and then rush to a retailer this morning to buy a replacement before my flight. Was not a fun experience, or a fun way to spend all of my Christmas money 😅
