Just wrote a letter back to a librarian pal who sent me a fiver in the mail to get a MetaFilter account. Even though we both have email (and I could probably text him) I decided to just reply to his request for an account in the same way I received it.
So, even though an account costs $5--and we have a waiver system for folks who can't afford it--people can still get one with minimal viable privacy intrusion, if they want. I'd love to hear of other websites which do the same #OldWeb
rn I'm doing a lot of research on early internet fandom for my bachelor thesis and since I was born after the turn of the millennium it's making me wonder how it must have been to be a fan on the internet when Usenet and ICQ/IRC/AIM and GeoCities were still a thing. It really feels like having some kind of lost nostalgia, I've only lived to see early facebook, msn and flipnote as my early internet interactions.
If you were a fan on the internet in the late 90's / early 00's, or know someone that was, please hit me up!! I'd love to have a chat about it!!
(please boost for coverage)
One of my favourite things to do as a student of gaming history and popular culture is to use the Internet Archive Wayback Machine to go on digital archaeological digs into scrapes of websites. They're a rich source of info and of-the-time hype. And with Psygnosis long gone at this point, they're a way of catching up on some of the coolness of my favourite UK pub/dev of the past's presence on the 90s web.
Such as these snapshots of the Psygnosis website circa late 1996.
I go by Lysianthus online. I'm a university student studying to be a materials scientist/engineer. I'm also a hobbyist developer/coder and a big fan of personal websites. I like #reading, #writing, #learning new things, and lurking in #fandom spaces.
My posts will be a mix of general + #personal stuff and my hobbies + interests.
Old enough to remember Web 1.0's fall, and the rise of 2.0 • romanticizes #OldWeb, Tech & Media • digital artist • writer • probably not a vampire.
Days consist of babying houseplants :blobcatflower: , having adventures with her dog (a golden retriever named Meadow 🌸), learning, and enjoying the ✨Arts✨.
I'm Alis! I'm an #SFF#author and I love #monsters so write books about them (kissing). I also sometimes (very rarely) draw, and (mostly) play too much #FFXIV.
I'm also the admin of fandom.ink, a #fandom centric Masto instance, inspired by the #tumblr exodus and aimed at #fanart, #fanfic, #RP, and other general fannish content.
When I'm not doing that, I'm probably writing bad #php for #oldweb sites, reading too much #danmei, or playing #DnD.
