From Nigeria: An Anime Community At Its Brightest Yet: Bolaji Akinwande explores Nigeria's anime fan community. He explores the fandom's growth, particularly in recent years, which has been aided by the growth of streaming services like Netflix, as well as the rise of anime-centric online spaces.
So many prompt events going on this month! So far I've seen #MerMay, #GentlebeardWeddingWeek and now this! There's some very fun tropes on this list as well 👀 Might even be fun to do some combined prompt fills?
I realize this may seem obvious but from what I’ve seen on lives, some people have difficulty with this, and I’m trying not to be a jerk about it, so:
It’s okay to be sad that two artists whom you are used to collaborating together, stopped. It’s okay to have an emotional reaction when your faves break up.
From idols groups, to acting ships, to a world famous dancing duo who were openly a couple, quietly breaking up, personally and professionally.
The final results for the tumblr poll on fic writer age. I suppose the 21-25-year-old crowd are the biggest group, followed by 26-30-year-olds and 16-20-year-olds. With 61k votes, the margin of error is ~0,4%, so this might be pretty solid data (we still need to account for factors like what age range are more likely to actually reblog the poll as oppose to just take part in it and reblogging among peers means more votes by the people of the same age group)
Do you know any fandom groups on here? Doesn't matter what kind – #GuppeGroups#Friendica#FediGroups etc. – or whether it's multi/pan-fandom or for a specific one. Let me know in the comments! I'm working on a little something-something :bbtea:
From 2010 to 2017, there was a thing called #AseanCitizen that we Aseans started as a grassroots movement. We were all bloggers from across, well, #ASEAN or South-East Asia.
Some of us joined together to produce one of the best multi-authored regional blogs. We talked about our cultures, write about what makes the region awesome. As well as, try to address the oftentimes silly and sometimes heated debates.
It's all gone now. Forgotten. The blogs dead or offline. We all grew up, got busy with our personal lives, and moved on separately. And the important reason? We lost interest in it as we started to see ASEAN was, is, and will never be for the grassroots.
That was the end of what was once a vibrant grassroot ASEAN Citizens effort. We did it all voluntarily. Without a single recognition from the top-down organisation that is ASEAN.
But today? ASEAN is still a top-down organisation. They kept trying to get the grassroots involved, but they are always failing. Why? Because it is a top-down organisation, as simple as that. They will never understand until they shift their mindset and approach to bottom-up.
(P.S I want to restart this grassroots movement, but I just no longer have the spark. Give me a very good reason why I should give it another chance. Or, at least, guide the new generation.)
@ubi Haha, true! It is 99% impossible to get ASEANs to use the fediverse. We can forget the fediverse, just Threads itself is being ignored even though Instagram is very popular in the region.
It's only Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Plurk, in that particular order. ^_^
The reasons for this are (at least based from experience and observation):
Family connections.
Fandoms + official accounts of their idols
Government accounts.
I am hoping that Threads can make fandoms and those official accounts to create Threads with Fediverse. Theoretically, it can be helpful in getting a huge chunk to move to the Fediverse
(Unfortunately, there is an anti-fandom vocal minority in the Fediverse, who's trying to gatekeep the network. /facepalm)
Another one that's good are government accounts with fediverse enabled.
But, until those happen, those 5 SNS platforms will remain.
As for language, except for the #Philippines and #Singapore, English is not an official language in the 8 member Nations (even though English is the official language of the organisation itself). Many can speak English, but it's more natural for them to speak in their local languages.
There are ASEANs in the fediverse network, but in the grand scheme of things… we're still few and a minority.
A Sketchy Proposal, Or How Fans Hide In Plain Sight: Lauren Orsini recalls a sketchy-sounding partnership pitch, and how it played into the fact that most people don't realize that anime fans are pretty much everywhere, in all age groups, even those beyond the typical 18-25 demographic.
I wish fandom had migrated elsewhere the first time Bumblr decided to alienate a big chunk of its userbase in 2018.
Instead, half of fandom (me included) clung to Tumblr while the rest scattered to Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Discord. Fan spaces became increasingly insular and inaccessible. Twitter allowed NSFW, sure, but it was already a Nazi bar, and an algorithm-fed drama generator. Now it's a Nazi-owned fascism generator, and so many people are still there.
I'm not sure if I understood it correctly, but this might further push hiring stream boost services.
In the #fandom world, it is known how to stream boost songs in Spotify and other similar music OTT without their algorithms detecting it. Which then increases the stream count of the song, as well as, the revenue the artist or label receives from these services.
Again, if I understood the article correctly, then hiring these boost services might become lucrative to ensure revenue from music OTT platforms like Spotify.
Hey #ofmd nerds of the Fediverse! Any fan interested in helping to promote this event on Mastodon? I have too much going on, or I would. I can automate posts to come here from Twitter or Tumblr using IFTTT, but the images don't come over, so manual edits to insert images will be necessary. Also, human monitoring for replies and mentions is needed. #Fandom#FandomEvent#OurFlagMeansDeath#IzzyHands#IzzyCanyon#Zine@ofmd@IzzyCanyon
I'm definitely in that category of fic authors in their 30s that write their faves waking up after the best sleep ever. I'm nearing 40 tho and noticing a further preoccupation with how soft and comfortable I can get their clothes and also how nice everything can smell 🥹

Sales for the Matelotage zine has opened! It's a lovely compilation of different works - the ships are listed on the tumblr! :blobcatheart: There's both a physical and a digital edition, with a nsfw add on. I wrote a piece for both :smugcat:

rn I'm doing a lot of research on early internet fandom for my bachelor thesis and since I was born after the turn of the millennium it's making me wonder how it must have been to be a fan on the internet when Usenet and ICQ/IRC/AIM and GeoCities were still a thing. It really feels like having some kind of lost nostalgia, I've only lived to see early facebook, msn and flipnote as my early internet interactions.
If you were a fan on the internet in the late 90's / early 00's, or know someone that was, please hit me up!! I'd love to have a chat about it!!
(please boost for coverage)
