I've been collecting too many lichen photos, so here's a small photo dump of a few of them. I find the flat ones just as interesting as the curly ones, and they're all the more interesting the closer you look.

That last one was an alpine forest species, and much larger than the others

Another collection of variable-coloured lichen. The strongest ones here are a bright orange flakey-looking one with raised cups, and a silver-grey one above it. However, there's a more upright orange one in the top corner that looks like flames, a different grey one with little hairs coming out of the sides of its lobes, and a mixture of flat ones in shades of brown, black, grey and white filling in the gaps between them all

If you love Morel mushrooms, May is the month to search for these delicacies of nature especially in deciduous woods, around Trilliums or other spring flowers or in old orchards. You know it is a real Morel if you slice it and it has a hollow interior, beware the false ones as they can make you sick!

PLEASE: can anyone help ID this butterfly?

Similar in size to an oak hairstreak, but pattern looks different to me. Or maybe just within-species variation?

There was an old wooden fence near where we were staying in Hampshire that had some of the best lichen I've seen growing recently.

This one is possibly Cladonia portentosa, a fruticose lichen, and I'm really happy with how it came out!

Adding my contribution to all the amazing images from the auroras last night. I had seen auroras over the years but never anything like this. At times, the entire sky was glowing and dancing, from the zenith to the horizon on 360 degrees!

The white curtains are open, & of the French doors is open slightly, allowing the light from the first day of the month of May enter the room, gently. The carpet is beige, & the photo is from the perspective where Maitreya sits on the floor, across the room, to the left of the doors. Out the doors can be viewed a warm-blue sky with a slight cloudy haze yet the day is still a sunny one. The edge of the beige-sandstone tenement apartment building across the street can be viewed, & as well the beige-brick newer apartment building behind the older one. The moment is warm yet breezy, a moment of pause & calm.

A square photo in colour shows a Glasgow courtyard on a mostly-sunny, partly-cloudy day. In the courtyard, there are many trees, some with leaves, some with flowers & leaves, & some still with neither, as the photo was in April. The sunlight, bright yet still cool, is filtering through the clouds & then through the leaves & flowers. The moment is calm & happy, with a sense of real contentment.

    Primum inter Pares (2013)

    Enjoyed a fun spring hike yesterday in southern . Went up an isolated rock mountain (a “monadnock” and so-named). No ice or snow, all the way to the summit. Great views from the top! Lots of class II scrambling up steep rock slabs — impressive that this is the popular “family” trail— those 6 year old children from New Hampshire are tough! 😀
