I can't figure out if mastodon is a high context culture or not. People seem to be expected to give long introductions and do a lot of identity/positionality disclosure, but also an enormous reply guy culture which is defined by low context drive-by. Conversational turn-taking is extremely low compared to other platforms ime, but depth-seeking is high. What an interesting mix.

*obviously, these experiences are all situated within my own network effects, and I'm not well networked here.

I find that when you mute people who seek attention through language-policing and nitpicking, you end up with a pretty chill feed of people who mostly understand that we're all going through different shit.

To follow through on my pledge to do more of my reading on the , I've been visiting random blogs using this site and adding any interesting ones to an feed.

My intention is to browse this feed much the same way I would the news -call it a self-care practice. I want to spend more time in reflection and less in panic. I also want to get ideas for, perhaps, my own blog someday.

Here is a directory of simple websites by @sjmulder:

Do you know more directories?

Most of those pages work well in , so I'm thinking in including some directories in the Dillo website.

Many yearn for the "good old days" of the web. We could have those good old days back — or something even better — and if anything, it would be easier now than it ever was.

@molly0xfff Excellent article, thank you for writing it, Molly.

Although I do wish I didn’t feel like we didn’t exist while reading it.

This is the Small Web—what Laura & I have been specifically working to realise for the past six years at least (if not closer to a decade if you count our work on the problem before settling on one possible solution):

We do this as a self-funded (read; struggling) tiny not-for-profit (https://small-tech.org).

And now, pages.casa complies with guidelines

Even @dillo can display it.

And give the same render as firefox.

I feel like I've just opened a door that I've only ever heard muffled crys of joy from the other side. It's completely bonkers in here. So much creativity. Am I late to the party or is it just getting started?

Coming soon: it’s going to be trivial to deploy a different app on your Small Web server. Useful if you’re a dev and you’re playing around with different apps.

https://vimeo.com/932120624

(Also, notice the speed at which deployment happens. I’m one step away from implementing this in Domain using pre-warmed Kitten instances – called toasty kittens – thereby bringing the time it takes to deploy your own Small Web place down to a handful of seconds.)

:kitten: 💕

aral OP ,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

This is approximately how long it takes to deploy a Small Web¹ place currently using Domain² (under a minute).

https://vimeo.com/932155088

I plan on reducing that another order of magnitude to single-digit seconds by the end of the week.

(Made a recording so we can compare it afterwards.) ;)

🎉 w00t! Just got deployment from pre-warmed servers working for the first time :)

Will post a screen capture once I’ve cleaned up the interface.

It’s single-digit seconds to deploy your own Small Web place (server) at your own domain! :awesome:

(I’ve been working towards this moment for the past six years so apologies if I sound like a giddy schoolboy.)

Owncast is awesome! I just played around a little with it and it just works! You genuinely can go in under a minute from not having ever heard of it to streaming over your own server! See https://owncast.online/quickstart/installer/ for how.

We really need more software that just works and is beautiful and user-(i.e. human)-respecting!

little story for tonight.

while i was goofing around with , I ended up searching for some old Simpsons icons for my classic Macintosh (an LC 475), and stumbled upon an entry on the garden called Banned Simpsons Icons. (Who could resist downloading something with a title like that?)

They were called the "Banned Simpsons Icons" because Fox once sent the artist - Jeanette Foshee - a cease & desist letter for her uncannily perfect renderings of the copyrighted characters. they planned on suing her for every penny she made ($0.00) on them. this was back in 1995.

i thought - hell, what a wild story. why don't I get a hold of the artist - jeanette - and find out more about her banned icon set?

what i stumbled upon broke my heart, and i ended up spending a week digitally preserving what i could find.

I've just tried

It's a static site generator. Unlike many others, Publii is a graphical application, very easy to use. It manages content edition with 3 different methods:

  • Wysiwyg editor
  • Block editor (inspired by Medium IHMO)
  • Markdown editor
Adding images is simple, you can select one as featured for Organic data, put one in the header for the site or for each post.
It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux.

New blog post: Streaming HTML

https://ar.al/2024/03/08/streaming-html/

Let me show you how easy it is to create a simple counter web app using the new Streaming HTML workflow in Kitten before peeling away the magic layer by layer so you learn how to make the same app using:

• HTMX & WebSockets
• Plain old JavaScript, and, finally,
• Without Kitten in pure Node.js.

Enjoy + let me know what you think.

Is there any TLD registry (not registrar) and accompanying domain name extension (.com, .net and so on) out there that’s owned by a small/independent, i.e. trustworthy business? Feels like they’re all owned by some creepy mega-corp.

.blog owned by Automattic is a decent example, though they’re not exactly very indie anymore, and have come under strong scrutiny of late. I wonder if there are even better alternatives.
