"Is Earth Day greenwashed and obsolete?" a Salon writer asks. Has its core message been diluted as corporations use the annual event for marketing purposes?
In honor of Earth Day, Vox launched a special Home Planet package. Here's the entire collection, which includes fascinating stories on giving up meat, fostering pigeons and the "Squirrel Census."
Before everyone starts dissing #EVs and celebrating the #BMW's iX5 Hydrogen, believing that #cars are going to run on pure #water tomorrow, remember that the 2 primary methods of producing #hydrogen at scale are steam #methane reformation & autothermal reforming using oxygen and #CO2. From 'blue' (as aforementioned) to 'pink' or 'yellow', all production methods hide under the unicorn #green method, hurling us towards total #climatebreakdown.
Brian Tokar - teacher, writer, and long-time activist - shares his firsthand account of the history and legacy of environmental radicalism.
If you're feeling #climate despair this #earthmonth, if you want the inside story on #environmentalism and #green politics, if you're wondering what radishes have to do with all this... tune in to episode 18 now on the platform of your choice! (Link in bio to listen!)
From Atmos magazine: "Without expanding the definition to include the care sector, the creation of 'green' jobs in male-dominated industries like energy and construction risks perpetuating gender inequality in the labor market."
Update for clarity: I am totally behind the idea of letting this rogue company go bankrupt, and then nationalizing it -- and then firing -- and prosecuting -- senior management.
Dear Everyone who Hyperventilates about the Evils of Capitalism -- on this one, we can pursue a common cause.
Nationalize #Boeing--don't wait for it to go bankrupt--and make it a taxpayer-owned #green asset by funding a rapid R&D program that fast-tracks deployment of a SAFE passenger plane with a carbon footprint of zero.
THIS is a situation where greed clearly isn't "working." Not every big company presents such a situation. This one does.
The key to renewable energy (whcih by its nature can be erratically supplied) is storage.
But, the Govt. thinks storage is not enough & still advocates for gas turbines to cover gaps in renewable energy provision.
However, pumped hydro (using gravity, to release water previously pumped up hill during surplus energy periods) is one of the most efficient storage technologies (& is clean), and once built cheap to maintain.
"#Ryan and £Coveney in heated row over data centres"
Okay, so I was just having a discussion about this on Mastodon the other day.
It's 2024, dammit. #DataCenters should only get approval from the #government entities regulating them IF they are demonstrably #carbonneutral. Full stop.
This shows that there is no fictitious money in the strict sense of value not being based on material work and ressources. Every monetary unit depends on some kind of administrative process, and in the case of Bitcoin #mining very much so.
It actually seems to make sense for #capitalism to waste lots of energy in the process of generating Bitcoins. Every commodity produced bases on extractive procedures like mining and fossil fuels, on employing human work which again has to be renewed in social reproduction.
All this leaves lots of waste which can't be exploited anymore but remains as a kind of negative equivalent to the capital accumulated as exchange value.
So #climate catastrophe produces negative value in itself which is to be used as a new kind of value for #green capitalism. Waste is not only an outcome of #capital accumulation but already needed in the beginning what gives the energy invested in Bitcoins the meaning of one production factor among others.
A small but significant global movement is seeking to make #publictransport free to use as a central plank to #green urbanism.
as the Guardian point out:
'Flourishing & accessible public transport systems are an essential feature of sustainable 21st-century living. They are a means of social inclusion & wellbeing, helping to generate a sense of place and collective belonging'!
Being free from fares can be a big part of this... but in the UK we're wedded to an altogether different model!
