2023 was the northern hemisphere’s hottest summer in 2,000 years
“Looking back at the past 2,000 years, the team searched for the warmest summers on record to see how they compared to 2023. They found that the hottest June to August in the pre-industrial era was in 246 CE when temperatures were around 0.88⁰C above average.
This record stood for over 1,000 years, before being broken repeatedly since the late 1990s.”

Planting trees is something we’re told we need to do more of…particularly in cities. As our urban areas get increasingly hot with every passing year, we need trees to provide shade as well as absorb emissions. But will our native trees be able to survive in these increasingly arid conditions?
We need to start planting the trees that will tolerate our changing climate.
A forest in Utah made of a single tree known as Pando has 47,000 stems and has amassed 6,000 metric tons of life in its thousands of years on Earth. It’s the largest living organism on the planet in terms of mass. Naturally, something that large and old has something to say, and recordings released this year let us “hear” it like never before.
Chi siamo noi d’altronde 🍀
The Tanoak Tree: An Environmental History of a Pacific Coast Hardwood by Frederica Bowcutt, 2015
Tanoak ( Notholithocarpus densiflorus ) is a resilient and common hardwood tree native to California and southwestern Oregon. Having studied the patterns of tanoak use and abuse for nearly twenty years, botanist Frederica Bowcutt uncovers a complex history of cultural, sociopolitical, and economic factors affecting the tree's fate.
