For the Women Who Accused the #Trump Campaign of Harassment, It’s Been More Harassment
Trump is well known for publicly bullying his #political rivals, but the former president’s campaign has also used similar tactics to launch private, relentless attacks against some of its own workers.
i'd like to add that Hannah #Arendt's "lesser of two evils" quote is misused in the current #political context
i think if Hannah were still alive today she'd be saying "no, you fing dingbats, #Trump is #fascism, just fing #vote you goddamned walnut brains"
although she'd probably swear a little less than the words i am putting into her mouth, but she'd have the same sentiment with better tact and composure
“The Freedom Archives contains over 12,000 hours of audio and video recordings as well as print materials dating primarily from the late-1960s to the mid-90s. These collections chronicle the progressive history of the Bay Area, the United States, and international movements for liberation and social justice.”
Many Americans believe Congress could be fixed with a simple solution: Throw the bums out with term limits.
But that creates more problems than it solves, says political scientists.
For one, members in their legally mandated final term in office enjoy a kind of "senioritis" -- and experience apathy toward being productive in their final year, because they don't have to face the voters again at the ballot box.
The prosecution asks that the defense be precluded from asking #StormyDaniels whether she was arrested. Justice #Merchan agrees w/the prosecutors, saying that “anybody can be arrested” & that it “doesn’t prove anything.”
The people call Stormy Daniels back to the stand
#Trump atty #Necheles begins questioning by saying that in 2011, Daniels denied having had sex w/Trump.
Conroy insists #StormyDaniels needs & is entitled to protection, that she & other #witnesses should not be exposed to Trump's "barrage of threats." He argues lifting the #GagOrder would be a deterrent to other witnesses.
Conroy says Trump wants to attack Daniels, "Let's not pretend he wants to engage in high-minded discourse.”
#DartmouthCollege professor arrested during protest: 'It's really shameful
'
Story by Hannah Cotter
5/2/2024
"Video captured by News 9 showed the moment #Orleck was arrested by police during the protest. She said she was among a handful of professors who showed up to support students at what she called a peaceful protest until law enforcement arrived in #RiotGear.
"'And it's really shameful in a sleepy little campus, in a rural area like Dartmouth, that they brought in this ridiculous show of arms and strength and violence,' she said.
"She also wanted to address Gov. #ChrisSununu calling the protests against the war in #Gaza#antisemitic. She said she's a #Jewish woman and did not feel safe after last night's police response.
"'As a Jewish woman of an age that I grew up in a neighborhood full of #Holocaust survivors and knew Holocaust survivors, I have to say that I think this is disingenuous,' she said. 'It's a weaponizing of #antisemitism for their own #political purposes, which is to #SuppressDissent. And if, in fact, as the governor and the college president said, the point is to make the campus safer for the Jewish community members, I have to say that what happened next made it decidedly less safe for all of us.'
"Orleck, who has been a professor at Dartmouth for more than three decades, said as part of her bail condition, she is being banned from Dartmouth's campus. She said her emails to the institution have gone unanswered."
Prosecutors in Trump’s #criminal trial say he has violated a #GagOrder barring him from attacking #witnesses, #jurors & others close to the case. Testimony is set to resume later Tuesday morning.
#Conroy says that #Trump “violates the order when he posts about known #witnesses or reasonably forseeable witnesses,” & “violates the order when he posts about a #juror or prospective juror.”
Throwing a "#MAGA" into a post doesn't make it #political, Conroy says, dismissing the idea that Trump's comments fall under the category of protected political speech. It may, in fact, make it more ominous, Conroy adds.
Todd Blanche, one of Trump's lawyers, is responding for the #defense. He says #Trump knows what the #GagOrder allows him & there was "no #willful violation" of it.
He again argues, as he did in his opening statement, that there's nothing to see here.
#Blanche is arguing that nothing can be seen devoid of #political context when it comes to Trump.
[reminiscent of seal team 6 can assassinate political rivals argument]
#Blanche is trying to get #Trump out of hot water by reframing Trump's statements about #MichaelCohen & #StormyDaniels as responses to "a barrage of political attacks."
#Merchan says he doesn't want to get into "interpreting & reading between the lines" of Trump's posts as Blanche continues to push the point that Trump's attacks are #political, & not specifically related to the case, despite being about #witnesses.
#Blanche says that a post from Michael #Avenatti, which caused #Trump to launch into an attack on StormyDaniels & MichaelCohen, was a political argument, about speech not in the case but on social media & in interviews.
I guess, Blanche is saying, Trump's response is not an attack on #witnesses but a continuation of a political discussion.
The #legal & #political strategies by the Trump #law team have always been intertwined.
#Pecker said he didn't know what the meeting was about before he arrived. When he got there, #MichaelCohen & #Trump asked him what he & his magazines could do "to help the campaign.”
That quote goes directly to the argument that the #HushMoney payments were made to help Trump win.
In #Blanche’s opening, he said Trump's dealings w/Pecker were regular practice in #journalism.
But a #political#candidate flat-out asking a publisher "to help the campaign" is NOT NORMAL.
A #juror was quickly dismissed at the start. She was among the 7 already selected, she said she was very worried that despite the fact the court ruled to keep jurors’ name secret, she would still be exposed & targeted.
A Manhattan DA prosecutor, Joshua Steinglass, said that #juror 4 or someone w/ their name seems to have been #arrested in the 1990s in Westchester for tearing down #political ads. After some more research, he says, they also found that the juror's wife was previously involved in a #corruption inquiry & cooperated w/ the DA's office. This means that the juror, if they've identified the right person, #lied in response to one of the questions on the questionnaire.
“This case has nothing to do w/your personal #politics, your feelings about a particular #political issue. It’s not a referendum on the #Trump presidency, a popularity contest … or any indication of who you plan to vote for” Steinglass said.
“This case is about whether this man broke the #law,” he said, pointing at Trump. He asked one potential juror if he could do that
“I could be objective, no problem,” he replied.
When Steinglass said some witnesses have “baggage,” Trump shook his head.
Another prospective juror interviewed by Necheles, says she is very "centrist." She says she appreciates #democracy & a diversity of #political opinion. But, says, "I really don't think this case is about my #personal politics, this case is ultimately about the #evidence & the #facts presented." She concludes by saying that her family background "comes from #totalitarian regimes," & that bc of that, she believes in "innocent until proven guilty."
Break is over in courtroom. I've caught you up on most everything in previous toots, so go to my feed for details.
Press:
Prosecutor: Michael Cohen accepted responsibility. So we should be allowed to bring that out on direct and that he lied on Defendant's behest. That changed, when Michael Cohen decided to accept responsibility. So evidence about the plea is essential
THE ROUTLEDGE INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK OF HERITAGE AND POLITICS by Bozoğlu, Gönül; Campbell, Gary; Smith, Laurajane; Whitehead, Christopher (editors) #Routledge#Books
I am reading this book. Very interesting, but very expensive (cheaper ebook version).
"The Routledge International Handbook of Heritage and Politics surveys the intersection of heritage and politics today and helps elucidate the political implications of heritage practices. It explicitly addresses the political and analyses tensions and struggles over the distribution of power."
"Two #rightwing#political operatives must pay up to $1.25 million in fines after they were found liable for launching a robocall campaign designed to keep #Black New Yorkers from voting...
De Gruyter Handbook of Citizens’ Assemblies (2023) #OpenAccess#Book by M. Reuchamps, J. Vrydagh and Y Welp (eds.).
"Citizens’ Assemblies (CAs) are flourishing around the world. Quite often composed of randomly selected citizens, CAs, arguably, come as a possible answer to contemporary democratic challenges. Democracies worldwide are indeed confronted with a series of disruptive phenomena such as a widespread perception of distrust and growing polarization as well as low performance. Many actors seek to reinvigorate democracy with citizen participation and deliberation. CAs are expected to have the potential to meet this twofold objective."
“When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross, and the New York Times Opinion section will say we are all overreacting.”
The #NYTimes once published an article saying that #Hitler wasn’t really that bad. He was just using #antisemitism as a way to attract followers & keep them excited about his #political campaign.
The NYTimes more recently published an article saying that #Trump isn’t really that bad. He is just using threats of #violence & #authoritarianism as a way to attract followers & keep them excited about his political campaign.
EMPIRES OF LIES? THE POLITICAL USES OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IN WAR by Nour A. Munawar (2023) #Article#OpenAccess
"This article investigates how cultural memory has been manipulated in the war in Ukraine, and in the previously occupied Crimea. We argue that cultural heritage, memory, and museum collections have been removed and/or repurposed to legitimise the current invasion by linking it to a grand narrative of Russian power and the recovery of ancestral lands. We present case studies from the annexation of Crimea (2014), the war in Ukraine (2022 -), and make a brief comparison with the armed conflict in Syria (2011 – 2022)."
