Public art - Tom Otterness, “New Direction” on the Toshiko Takaezu Terrace, Clinton NJ

A black and white photograph of a bronze sculpture, on a pedestal - with pedestal it’s about two meters tall. The larger figure on the pedestal has a cylindrical body, a round head with simple eyes and mouth in a neutral expression, and four-toed feet. Positioned as if it’s stepping forward, the right hand is raised with the index finger of the four-fingered hand pointing forward. Below and in front of the left foot, a much smaller figure - the height of the first’s legs - stands. Similar in design, but with a conic body and hat, it’s looking ahead as well, with hands on hips. The arms are bent and curved almost like teacup handles. In the background passing behind the sculpture, blurred, the lightly painted structure of an historic cast-iron bridge over the river is visible. On the far shore there are trees.
