I'm glad that fear of avian flu is making people reconsider milk consumption, but honestly, even if milk doesn't harm you personally, it's still important to consider stopping.
Cows develop milk when they bear children. This means that cows are kept in captivity, get forcefully impregnated, and as soon as the calf is born, it's taken away so it can't drink from the milk supply. Then the cow can be milked by machines while she's crying for days and days, searching for her baby. Whether the cow grew up far away or local to you, this principle doesn't change.
Dairy cows get bred to produce more and more milk, living an uncomfortable life of pain, wounds, infections, injuries and early death.
Currently there are more than 270 million dairy cows on earth going through this suffering. It's not a good business to support or to depend on. Living beings exist to live, they're not here to get abused to generate profit for humans.
@begrudging_recluse Dairy is cruel and barbaric! Animals do not deserve any of this. All of that plus the male calves are taken away and slaughtered or forced into cruel veal production for the remainder of their short lives. All the females are forcefully impregnated by artificial insemination which means they have to get the semen out of the bull somehow. That is a cruel process which uses an electric prod inserted in the rectum to jolt the poor bull into releasing the semen. And yes I have seen a video of exactly that and sometimes they shock more than once. Absolutely sadistic animal cruelty!
#MythologyMonday: The #duck was the #animal of #Sequana, goddess of the source of France’s river Seine, who was often depicted sailing in a boat whose prow was shaped into a duck’s head. Birds are often symbols of Celtic divinity, especially of goddesses. Source: P. Monaghan Encyclopedia of #Celtic#Mythology and #Folklore`
My friend Susan Abulhawa - Palestinian author and changemaker - recently returned from Gaza. She spent two weeks there; delivering aid for animals and people, running workshops to support Palestinian people under siege to tell their own stories; and checking in on friends and family.
She didn't want to leave - Israel cancelled Humanitarian visas. Until she can enter again, Susan has been publishing her accounts of this brief time in Gaza. These pieces are haunting and honest. The devastation and state violence is much worse than what we've seen online.
I'll post her articles in this thread as they're published. And the videos she's produced. And urge everyone to read/watch.
@KarenWyld@palestine She's an incredible woman. She even brought animal food with her each time for Sulala Rescue (the only official #animal#rescue in #Gaza). I will absolutely send a donation.

Baby Animals First is a board book series that I really love : the pictures are always beautiful and the text is always poetic and adorable. I love the animal diversity, and the fact that Alexandra Claire shares well known animals, but also rarer ones. It is the perfect read for little animal lovers ! There are currently six titles available : ABC, 123, Sounds, Shapes, Opposites and Colors.
We have a situation here. Less than ten feet away from our front door, under a rather dense cypress tree, I discovered that some animals dug up dirt very close to the tree base and there are pieces of cholla portions in the hole. Whatever animal that is, it seems they rest/sleep there..
What animal could it be? Should I leave them alone or try to get rid of them by covering up the hole in the ground?
Eugene the bear wants to make friends, but each time an animal approaches he becomes tongue-tied, gets a lump in his throat, looks this way and that way, and just wants to hide! One by one, animals try to befriend Eugene, but it’s always the same.
Lucky for Eugene, his soon-to-be-friends are patient, kind and know just what to do to help him feel comfortable. #picturebook#childrensbook#kidlit#book#bookstodon#littlefreelibrary#bookdrop#animal#animalbooks#friendship@bookstodon
