@thurrott Something in one of these updates is causing my #Windows11 device to randomly reboot when left unattended. When I leave it overnight with a VM running or come home from work, its been restarted.
@thurrott A masterclass review Paul! I still have a primary #windows11 PC, but I love my M1 #MacBook Pro. As you mentioned, the integration with the rest of the #Apple ecosystem is a delightful part of owning a #Mac. When Apple hits M5 I plan to replace my Windows laptop with either a Mini or Studio. There just isn't anything sticky in Windows for me anymore.
@thurrott First world problem, just upgrade already. Its not like upgrading is gonna have a major impact. Operating systems are solved problems. You can launch a web browser, word processor, email just as you would in #Windows10 on #Windows11. We all know that 90% of time spent in Windows. Sure, if you are a corporation specialized LOB apps, then testing and paying to maintain compatibility might be required.
@thurrott You do know 9 out of 9 of these issues could be solved with your 15 inch #MacBook Air or #Ubuntu#Linux. 😁But I understand for practical purposes since you write about #Windows for a living. A suggestion though for others who still need to use Windows for work or other purposes is maybe move it to a #VM. What keeps frustrating me is how much #MicrosoftEdge has its tentacles deep into the system. Every time I open it, my laptop fan starts spinning like crazy.
@thurrott The idea of preference for me has faded when it comes to desktop operating systems. I use #windows11#macOS and #Linux Fundamentally they are all the same at this point. There are little things I like about each. On Windows, I prefer the skeuomorphic icons, on Mac I like the detail and UI gestures, Linux I like that it’s free and does 99% of the things we buy a Mac or Windows device for.
@thurrott Its what we have deployed on all PC's at work, but never thought too much of it. I remember back in like 2007, to get access to Enterprise was seen as some holy grail. I have a bunch of saved #MSDN keys which includes a lot of #Windows10 Enterprise keys. I should upgrade Pro installs to it just for fun.
@nixCraft It’s strange how my nostalgia for this era of the Linux desktop grows fonder. Running older #Linux distributions in a modern day VM is super difficult. Not to mention how difficult it was on hardware back in the 90s.
@rbreich The fact that she basically tricked Sergey Brin using her vajayjay to get a large some of money should tell you what her true intentions are. She's a bait and switch.
@thurrott After all, it's not wise to jump out of a perfectly working airplane 😂 I use #Windows10 at work, but some of the computers are starting to get the upgrade to #Windows1. To be honest though, I don't see any night and day benefits. Its not like a going from FAT32 to NTFS, or a true 32 bit operating system with memory management, pre-emptive multi-tasking.
@arstechnica#Canva could twist the knife by purchasing or merging with #Figma. If I could go back in time I would tell #Macromedia, sell off assets like #Freehand and #Dreamweaver to #Quark in order to create more hyper competition in the market. #Adobe wouldn't be doing what its doing right now. Not many learned from the #Microsoft suite wars of the 90s that bundling is the end game.
@rbreich Corporations just have the government under a spell and are able to get away with this greed with no fear. It seems like the future where are heading in is we are all just losers.
@thurrott I am still super happy with my M1 MBP 13 I bought in 2020. Still super fast and does all I need. I can't justify getting another Mac now. But I still have a Windows laptop hooked up to three displays. My plan is once Apple reaches M5 I will use my delayed gratification and swap it out with a Mac Studio. I plan on getting one of these Air's for my sibling to replace his 2017 Intel MBP.
@rbreich Yes, she has probably been one of the most involved and outspoken VP’s in decades. Probably since Al Gore. I hardly remember much from Biden, Pence, Cheney or Dan Quayle or Bushes time as VP.
@arstechnica Seriously contemplating moving to Libre Office full time next year. It’s possible I could get away with free Office online for my budget spreadsheet too.
@rbreich No, Trump is a deflector. He knows he has problems and the only way he was gonna hide in plain sight from his problems and get away was by achieving the highest office in the land. Within that capacity, he would be untouchable. Who really wants to send a former American president to prison? There is no precedent for that and he knows it would be a bad look.
@rbreich You would expect a guy like this to have some introspection and ask, do I really need all this money? Do I need to buy a mansion for 180 million dollars? Do I need to spend 9 billion to go space? Yet, I pay more taxes than him in Washington state because the regressive tax system here.
@rbreich All this tells me no matter who is in #Government the rich will always win. So, instead of dwelling on this, might as well explain how Americans can maybe play the game too.
@thurrott Its interesting, they mention Office 2024 won't include any of the AI and other features of Microsoft 365 like you are missing, when in fact, most consider that a plus. Strange they would drop Publisher when official support doesn't end until 2026. I guess thats due to over lap with the 5 year support. Might pick up a copy.
@arstechnica#Apple needs to do something about hands. I would also have them focus on doing 360 scanning for #VisionOS 2 where you put your Vision Pro on a tripod and sit on a exam room stool and you turn slowly while it captures your upper torso, your arms using suggested gestures. This would be for advanced options though.
@thurrott So why was Scott McNealy making such a big deal about Microsoft having to SUN systems for their internal mail when they SUN obviously depended on Windows a great deal for everyday productivity? I can understand they wouldn't buy every employee an expensive UNIX box for practical reasons. But it looks like even the Mac wasn't a good enough option or even NeXT workstations which would considered user friendly.
While Wendy’s plans to price gouge you with Uber-style surge pricing, it’s simultaneously enriching wealthy shareholders with a $500 million stock buyback program.
That’s the thing about corporate greed: It’s shameless.
They’ll just keep pushing to see how far they can go.
@rbreich There is a soulless bunch of people running corporate America right now. These are people who just don’t care and would rather pressure hard working people into misery and despair. The future for many in this country is really bleak. Wages not keeping with cost of living, a rent and subscribe society #chaos
@arstechnica To be honest with you, #Windows11 doesn't have any annoying features thats bugging me. Sure, #Copilot is there prominent in the interface, but can be largely ignored. I used it a few times and haven't in weeks and it does bug me to. #MicrosoftEdge is probably where you will see the most nag.
@thurrott I noticed there is a sudden exodus of veterans from these large tech companies. I feel like it boils down to boredom and mature platforms with so much resolved and so many solutions available through apps, third party hardware that work with them. The need to innovate is becoming less.
@leo#Apple has a different interpretation of first come, first serve. Went to do a demo this morning; among the first at the store and was told I need to schedule a demo on the website. So, I missed trying it out. The irony, if you are gonna buy one, they can schedule a demo right then and there. Looks like Apple's strategy is the sell this device through #FOMO
@thurrott My #Windows10 PC at work is being upgraded to #Windows11 next week. #Microsoft is likely saving #Windows12 for the 30th anniversary of Windows 95. The company has used that as a point in time when Windows became mainstream. August 2025 seems like the right time do it and it will be close to 5 years after Windows 11 launched.
@arstechnica It feels like so many people in their 80s are passing away rapidly. Always wondered about the folks behind so many of these fundamental technologies look like. We need to ensure we seek them out, have them share life experiences. I’m glad Dave Cutler recently did.
@arstechnica#Folliculitis is the one I sometimes deal with. I use to get rid of it really quickly with #Doxycycline, but its useless now. My new line of defense is #cephalexin, but its getting a fight, I have to take it for longer periods. When you live in densely populated areas, touching door knobs, elevator buttons, you are bound to catch it. Washing your hands, sanitizing and avoid touching your face is the best you can do, but thats super hard.
@thurrott Hope I will be able to use it. Had an issue where a user signed into their Edge profile at work using their personal email (this is a shared computer) and there was no way to get it off except reimage the computer. I signed into my work profile in Edge on #Windows11 VM at home to do my time sheet and I explicitly told it not to management the machine. Now all my damn work files are showing on the machine. Edge is a virus.
@thurrott Dave Cutler said only 20% of the original code from the first version of #WindowsNT is in #Windows11 today. Even he expects it to be rewritten and go down further. It’s interesting to think but in the next 10 years, what we know as Windows today might be a completely different operating system under the hood.
@thurrott True, the NT kernel is estimated around 1.5 to 2 million lines of code out of the estimated 50 million lines of the code base. That’s just 2% if my math is correct.
